Holes are there for sure but I think the bucks will surprise even the coaches next year.. 12-0 last season and I dont think we will lose a game next year!!

    • The safety play worries me the most. The linebackers and defensive line will come along. They will make mistakes but they are freshman and sophomores. Last year our safety play was awful and both of them return. They made a lot of mistakes and they were juniors. If we are going to be as good as we think we should be, we are going to need major improvement on the back end of our defense.

    • I really hope we see consistently decent play from the safety position. Last season was so up and down. They would make a few good plays and then a few horrible plays. You won't always have great safety play each year, but if they are consistent and limit mistakes I will be happy.

    • 3 of 5 weaknesses in the middle of your D..this spells disaster for an undefeated season next year..all games are won in the trenches and the DL will not be on par with the group of 2012..young, talented and hungry is great but until they can control the line of scrimmage consistently, this group will be a downgrade..Mike is a huge concern..especially behind a young DL..and I have never been a fan of any of our current safeties..I dont care how "experienced" they are, neither are smart football players and certainly not good enough to make up for the inexperience in front of them..all that adds up to trouble and more than one loss next year (I hope Im wrong)............just sayin

    • I am beginning to wonder if Trey Johnson might be the answer at MLB. If he were arriving early that would be more likely, oh well.

Injury on at OT would be my only real concern on offense. There is not much depth on the ends . . .

      I dunno that I agree.

As for DL, there will be a lot more of a pass rush than even last year, imo. So long as Schutt, Hale, Bennett, and Carter can hold down the middle, I am not terribly worried.

The concern of safety play is overstated considering we are talking about 3 tear starters who are seniors and who are returning in their 2nd year of this new coverage scheme (remember how the big coverage mistakes slowly decreased as the year progressed)

MLB and DT as run stoppers are probably my primary concern but I think this offense will prevent teams from relying exlusively on the running game.

Although Trey is listed as a MLB by recruiting services, he says OSU is bringing him in as a WILL. Plus, Trey is only 215-217 pounds right now. Would need to bulk up to play the MIKE.

It's not ideal because it would take him out of his natural position, but one option at middle linebacker might be Ryan Shazier. After another full offseason in the weight room, I think Shaz would have the bulk to handle it.

    • The D-line will be young but more athletic and with more speed. Next years D-line starters all played last year and Bennett was injured the entire year so I look for him to have a big year and be a leader on the line. Shazier will lead the backers and Roby will be the overall defensive leader as well as the DB's.

Washington and Spence really grew up and were playing great as true freshman last year and now in the off season will be getting stronger with better technique.

The schedule will allow the young guys to really get some quality play time and develop depth so we should be ready for Big10 play.

    • The safety position is even more critical with green players in front of them. They're the last line of defense, and sloppy angles and non-existent tackling just won't get the job done.

    • come back in Nov and see if that is a concern

    • After watching what Bama's line did to a good ND Dline, it would be crazy not to worry about the Dline because of their inexperience. They obviously have unbelievable potential but they are my main concern this year.

We need to be building this team to beat Akabama year in year out, because the way things are shaping up, we might be playing them in the NC every year!!

    • Hey Bids, nice article. I am surprised though you didn't mention the opposite corner spot from Roby. Grant looked absolutely lost out there numerous times this year...no one will mess with Roby, but damn, Grant scares me out there. Thoughts? I think CJ has a great year and who will be at Star this year? Thanks Bids

I have always felt it is very unfair to expect a true frosh to come in and be the answer anywhere. Trey is going to spend the first half of the year dealing with home sickness.

    • Safety play def worries me the most... I think we'll have a young guy step up and be the plug at MLB (Johnson? Grant?) and with all of the Dline with playing with time last year, I think they will be just fine.

    • Weakness - overall team tackling ability. Way to many broke tackles against the Bucks this year. You have to be able to tackle in space, a great case of this was the attempted tackle of Denard at the end of the first half.

    • The only weakness I'm concerned about is Braxton Miller becoming a better " passing " quarterback.

A year with Fickell , Bollogna & that video coordinator dude stunted his development. Real anxious to see how much Braxton develops in his 2nd year under Urban/Herman tutelage.

    • If the DL plays well and keeps the OL off the second level, the LB's will be much better than expected and learn quickly. We have the athletes, they just need the opportunity.

    • Can we stop with the Percy Harvin crap. That is getting so old. This team is fine they just need to give the ball to other players to make plays. It's not like Harvin was their offense alone. And sorry, but Smith is a better RB than Hyde. He's just not getting the chance to show it every carry. He has the speed and quickness. Just give him the damn ball.

BN, obviously you don't watch much football. Smith is not a better back as he can run and all but ball security wins/loses games.....Smith in the game at the end of Sparty or meatchicken and a fumble and we lose. Not the top running back yet...kid needs to secure the rock or else no amount of talent is worth having him in over Hyde. Hyde very rarely fumbles.
