It sounds like Alvereze found out after Brett too the Arkansas job and wasn't even able to make a offer.
I think the biggest thing was assistant coaches salaries and facility upgrades that Wisconsin would not fix.
Both guys were on Dan Patrick.

Great article Bax. I agree with everything you said except for Purdue. I think Purdue will end up being alot better than you give them credit for. I would rate their MEYER MISMATCH RATING at 6.5, I truely believe that Hazell can turn them around. GO BUCKS!!

I have a couple of friends in Madison who say BB was not liked and most fans were happy to see him go. I think Alvarez know that Brett was not going to cut it.
When Brett asked him to match the Arkansas offer, I could just see Alvarez looking at him and saying...
... "Are you kidding me? Third in The Leaders Division? See ya!"

Another nice piece of work, Bax. It will be interesting to see who Wisconsin gets as their next coach, but one thing that almost always is true is that Wisconsin plays us tough even if they are coached by a block of cheddar. Purdue has given us fits at times and I agree Hazell is a very solid hire that has me worried a little. I sleep better knowing Urban is the man and recruits like no one else in the conference.

I love your stuff Bax but putting scUM as more of a mismatch than Mich St is a little over the top. scUM will have way more talent than Mich St ever will (unless they hire DickRod again) which will keep The Game somewhat close in most years. Hoke hasn't showed me much as an in-game coach but he is definitely not an idiot when it comes to recruiting.. I also believe that his in-game coaching will look better when he has the players to run a pro style offense. I see scUM being a more talented Wisconsin in a few years. That being said, i'm still confident that Meyer will still have enough of an advantage to get it done most years but I dont see it ever being as easy as it was against DickRod.

BUT are we giving more credit than due at this time because he is a former Buckeye? I like they said they will spend money for assistants. i personally want the best coaches to come to the B1G so it elevates the league.to SEC level in ESPN minds.

It is a very fair question to ask: I thought Dantonio would do a great job getting into Ohio and picking up Tier 2 kids when he went to MSU and it worked out as well as he could have ever dreamt. So does that success of a former Buckeye coach make me more likely and confident that Hazell will succeed?
I don't think I gave him TOO much credit by listing him as a 8.5 mismatch rating. He still is going to bring in less talent than Ohio State. But, my assumption also runs with Purdue following through on getting their top assistant choices like Johnson & Haynes and really getting into Ohio.
The idea of a third of Tressel's staff at Purdue would make me giddy if I was a Boiler.
So let's say that I like his track record as a head coach and I'm confident he'll follow through on his hires. After all, assistants mean almost as much as the Big Guy. If he doesn't bring in Haynes & Johnson then maybe we should temper our expectations a bit.
