**Setting Sights On Sophs … Yes, if you follow recruiting at all here at Bucknuts you know Urban Meyer and company are relentless on the recruiting trail. And you know they have been working ahead on 2014 recruiting for a long time. But what you may not know is that they are really working ahead – as in three top sophomores from the state of Michigan were going to visit Ohio State this weekend for the Ohio State-Indiana basketball game.
What happened with Townsend?
Those three top 2015 prospects are quarterback Jayru Campbell, running back Michael Weber, and defensive lineman Joshua Alabi who are teammates at Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech – which also happens to be home to Ohio State 2014 cornerback commitment Damon Webb.
Those four won’t make it down to Ohio State this weekend, but will visit Ohio State on Feb. 24 instead. All three of those sophomores have already been offered by Michigan State. Campbell also has offers from Alabama and Notre Dame, while Weber also has an offer from Michigan.
Bucknuts’ own Bill Kurelic already has his Michigan class of 2015 rankings out and he has Campbell No. 1 in the state, Weber No. 2 and Alabi No. 4. Kurelic has wide receiver/defensive back Brian Cole (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) at No. 3. And yes – you guessed it. The Buckeyes have already been in contact with Cole as well.
“Planting the flag” in that state up north? You’re damn right.
**Berger Update … The Ohio State staff will welcome in some very talented 2014 prospects this weekend for a Junior Day, but linebacker Kyle Berger from Cleveland St. Ignatius won’t be one of them. Oh, Berger is still very interested in Ohio State – more on that in a bit. But Berger is playing basketball for St. Ignatius and won’t really focus on football recruiting until his hoops season is over.
Berger was going to visit Michigan State last Saturday, but …
*But what? And is Berger a near-lock to OSU, or might he head elsewhere?
*Who is the “most-underrated” member of Ohio State’s excellent 2013 recruiting class?
*What is the real story with punter Johnny Townsend, who signed with Florida instead of Ohio State?
