**Walking On A Snap? … Lost in Signing Day fever is a solid group of preferred walk-ons that will (attempt to) suit up for the Buckeyes. Among them is Marion (Ohio) Pleasant wide receiver/long snapper Devlin McDaniel.

Buckeye fans will be smiling if Bell picks OSU.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound McDaniel, who turned down scholarship offers from Kent State, Air Force and Eastern Michigan, posted a 41-inch vertical leap and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 at Ohio State’s camp last summer.

“Ohio State has told Devlin that he will be playing wide receiver and long snapper and that they have a need for depth at that position,” Marion Pleasant head coach Aaron Cook said. “They have strongly emphasized how they want him to come in right away and compete.”

As a senior, McDaniel caught 38 passes for 764 yards and 11 TDs. He had 53 tackles and six INTs on defense. McDaniel also returned kickoffs and punts and was the long snapper on punts and PATs. A 4.0 student, McDaniel holds every single season and career receiving record at Pleasant.

“He’s actually a very, very good long snapper,” Cook said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how he finds his way on the field first. I know that when he visited Ohio State he was blown away with how much time Coach (Urban) Meyer spent with him and how up front and honest he was about their need and want of Devlin even though he wasn’t a scholarship kid.”

McDaniel, who was also offered a preferred walk-on spot at Wisconsin, will begin classes at OSU this summer.

“Devlin is an extremely talented football player who turned down (scholarships) to take this deal,” Cook said. “Obviously he’s going to have to work extra hard because of his preferred walk-on status, but he is very capable of making it at Ohio State. He has the right mentality going in.”

McDaniel will likely redshirt, which will give him two years of separation from OSU first-team long-snapper Bryce Haynes, who is on scholarship. Haynes redshirted in 2011 to bulk up and had a very-good season as a redshirt freshman in 2012.

** The Newest Buckeye … Stay tuned later today as Steve Helwagen will have his annual pre-signing day feature, On The Mark, where he asks’s Mark Porter as well as experts from for their takes on Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class.

As part of that process, we reached out to’s Gerry Hamilton, who has his finger on the pulse of Texas recruiting. The Buckeyes are getting three of that state’s top 15 prospects in LB Mike Mitchell, QB J.T. Barrett and WR-RB Dontre Wilson, who verbaled to the Buckeyes live on the news telecast of the Dallas FOX affiliate around 11 p.m. Eastern last night.

Here was Hamilton’s take on the talented Wilson:

*What’s the intel on Wilson?

*Could Deshaun Thomas return for his senior season?

*Who is a fast-rising football recruit from Dayton that Ohio State fans need to keep an eye on?

*Five recruiting experts give analysis and predictions on what will happen with Vonn Bell tomorrow.
