Urban Meyer will be leaning on veterans like Braxton Miller and Christian Bryant this spring

Ohio State opens spring practice Tuesday. The search will be on for playmakers, leaders and some answers to key questions. Plus, we look at OSU's path in Big Ten hoops race.

    • “I tell our running backs every year before we go out and recruit, ‘I am going out to try and out-recruit this room.’ They look at me and I don’t know if they believe that. But I am dead serious when I say it. We are trying to out-recruit our current football players.
“In their mind, they’re like, ‘No, you’re not. I’m about to go prove to you that you can’t.’ For the guys coming in, they have the opportunity. They say, ‘Let my personality all the way out and go get it.’ That makes a whole entire team better.”

Stan Drayton's quote.. LOVE the HONESTY and the plyers MENTALITY in responding... AWESOME!!

    • I didn't think Jalin Marshall enrolled early...

    • Great stuff Steve, can't wait until Tuesday and spring ball. YES!!

      NC02

    • Great story Steve I wonder if a kid like Griffin will make a bigger showing because of knowledge of the playbook and grittiness. Also I wonder if a ball or dunn will get more than mop up duty due to injury or just outplayed someone.

I would imagine the real jobs being fought over are dline lb and star where is a position I think maybe Bell or bogard will man.

    • who were the players that enrolled early?

    • I thought Marshall was running track and was trying to defend his Long Jump State Championship.

No, he enrolled after playing in the UA game.

I wish Jalin enrolled early, but he definitely did not. He just finished playing HS basketball and I assume will do track, he is not on the official OSU roster that lists the early enrollees, and I have linked the official press release welcoming those who enrolled early, and it consists of the 5 other mentioned scholarship players plus walk on Houston and transfer/walk-on Hill.

    • I must be slipping in my old age. Only 5 scholarship guys enrolled early. I will fix the story. Sorry about that. Here is the release from OSU on the enrollees:

The Ohio State football team grew this week with the addition of six true freshmen who have completed high school requirements and enrolled at Ohio State for the spring semester. The six, plus a transfer walk-on, took part in the start of the team’s winter conditioning exercises Tuesday afternoon. The first day of spring football is Wednesday, March 5.

      The newest Buckeyes are:

CB Eli Apple – Vorhees, N.J. and Eastern High School
Eli Apple is a cornerback who is rated as high as the No. 6 prospect nationally on the ESPN 150 … played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl … helped Eastern, coached by Dan Spittal, to a 7-4 record in 2012 and to a regional semifinals berth … has always wanted to play for Ohio State … the son of Annie and Tim Apple, Eli just recently changed his last name from Woodard to Apple to honor Tim, his father since age 2.

QB J.T. Barrett – Wichita Falls, Texas and Rider High School
John Thomas (J.T.) Barrett is considered one of the nation’s premier dual threat quarterbacks, although his senior season came to an early end with a knee injury in the fifth game of the season … had rushed for 569 yards with seven touchdowns and passed for 784 yards and five scores prior to the injury … J.T. rushed for over 1,500 yards with nine touchdowns and passed for over 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns for coach Jim Garfield’s Raiders as a junior … he is the son of Stacy and John Barrett.

CB Cameron Burrows – Trotwood, Ohio and Trotwood-Madison High School
Cameron Burrows was Ohio State’s first commitment to the 2013 class when he announced in January 2012 that he would be a Buckeye … he helped lead Trotwood-Madison, coached by Maurice Douglass, to three state championship games, including going 14-0 and winning the Division II state title in 2011 … played in the 2013 Under Armour All-American game … Burrows was named first-team all-Ohio by the Associated Press … he is the son of Dionne and Andre Burrows.

FB Devin Hill – Columbus, Ohio and Northland High School
Devin Hill attended Purdue University the past two seasons – red-shirting in 2011 – and walked-on to the Ohio State football program this week after enrolling in school … played running back and linebacker at Northland and was a classmate of Jared Sullinger … Devin is the son of Venisa and Darryl Hill.

FB William Houston – Dublin, Ohio and Dublin Scioto High School
Despite holding a scholarship offer from another school, William Houston preferred being a Buckeye and accepted Ohio State’s offer to join the team as a preferred walk-on … Houston helped Scioto, coached by Karl Johnson, to an 8-3 record and a regional quarterfinal berth in 2012 by rushing for 1,158 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns … he also had 75 career receptions for 804 yards and six touchdowns … Houston is the son of Cynthia Rawls and William Houston, who was a three-year Ohio State letterman in the 1990s.

DE Tyquan Lewis – Tarboro, N.C. and Tarboro High School
Tyquan Lewis is a stand-up defensive end from Tarboro, N.C., and Tarboro High School … comes from a tremendous program at Tarboro … the Vikings, coached by Jeff Craddock, won three consecutive North Carolina Class 2A state championships and had won 21 consecutive games before dropping the 2012 state championship to East Lincoln … Lewis, who was injured in the title game but still played, recorded 13 sacks as a senior and was named to the Associated Press all-state team … Lewis is the son of Tyronda Whitaker.

DE Tracy Sprinkle – Elyria, Ohio and Elyria High School
The 2012 Associated Press first-team all-Ohio selection and co-defensive player of the year, Tracy Sprinkle recorded 19 sacks and 30 total tackles-for-loss among his 103 tackles as a senior … Elyria, coached by Kevin Fell, was 7-3 in both 2012 and 2011 … Sprinkle was a third-team all-state pick as a junior after making 94 tackles and eight sacks … Elyria’s Chase Farris is a third-year sophomore offensive lineman at Ohio State … Sprinkle is the son of Tracie Sprinkle and Percy Hicks.

If the Hoops team could pull off an upset at Indiana... There's still a CHANCE for a share of the B1G Title! Indiana could very well lose at Michigan in their last game. Could be a 4 way tie!

Likely? No way. But you never know...

Yes, if this season has taught us anything, we know anything could happen this week.

      SteveHelwagen

    • OK, the Monday update:

      RPI moves

      Indiana was 7 still 7
MSU was 8 still 8 after road loss at Michigan
Michigan was 11 now 10 after home win over MSU
      Minnesota was 15 now 16
Ohio State was 20 now 21
      Illinois was 35 still 35
Wisconsin was 26 now 41 after home loss to Purdue

      New poll rankings:

Gonzaga new No. 1 in both polls, Indiana drops to No. 2 in both
      Michigan 7 AP, 8 coaches
      MSU 10 AP, 12 coaches
OSU 14 AP (up from 16), 13 coaches
      Wisconsin 22 AP, 21 coaches

      Jerry Palm's new Bracketology:

      http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology

      Indiana 1 seed
      Michigan and MSU 3 seeds
      Wisconsin 6 seed
      OSU 7 seed to lexington
      Minnesota 7 seed
      Illinois 8 seed

Talking to some OSU beat reporters, one way to look at NCAA site assignments is the top seeds usually get put close to home.

      That means you may see:

      Auburn Hills -- Michigan, MSU
      Kansas City -- Kansas, K-State
      Philly -- Duke, Georgetown
      San Jose -- Gonzaga
      Lexington -- Indiana, Louisville
Salt Lake -- New Mexico, Arizona

Those 11 seem to be pretty easy to slot. That leaves one spot in San Jose and two each for Austin and Dayton.

Miami and Florida need to be somewhere but there is no site near Florida. They could go Austin or Dayton.

Looking at Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Marquette, St. Louis and Syracuse for the last 3 spots in the top 4 seeds. My guess is one of them gets relegated to San Jose, one to Dayton and one to Austin. Or something like that.
