Denard/Devin Combo Concerns Bucks

Orhian Johnson

Orhian Johnson

Ohio State's defensive players are concerned about a Michigan offense that appears to be hitting its stride and has two competent quarterbacks it will use in "The Game."

    • We need to score 28 points or more to win. I would love to see Fickell borrow the game plan from Pat Narduzzi, MSU defense shut down scUM in 2011 and 2012 with relentless pressure...BRING THE HEAT and takes chances on D!!! Michigan has played only 2 teams this that has been ranked and lost to both. Brady Hoke hasn't won a meaningful road game in his 2 years on Michigan...Saturday can't get here fast enough

I am not sure where they were ranked at the time, but all three of Mich's losses have come against teams that are currently ranked in the top 17 (including two ranked in the top-three in ND and 'Bama). They're a "good 8-3" and that's why the spread isn't all that much in OSU's favor. The Buckeyes are favored by 4.5 points at home, meaning Vegas thinks this would be a pick-em game at a neutral site. Mich would be favored if the game were in Ann Arbor.

    • It should concern the bucks. I thought it was a good enough wrinkle to save for the OSU game. They didn't have anything to play for last weekend.

    • Meatchicken always concerns me...but why not think positive?

KEY on Denard and pick-off Devin (he's green)...problem solved! gun cool

Of course, I thought they would beat Wisky by 13...cheers

A contrarian view: They barely beat Air Force at home. They barely beat MSU at home. They needed a Hail Mary to beat NW at home. To your point, these could have all been losses if they were on the road. The Alabama and Nebraska losses were pretty decisive losses. Let's assume that they could have won the ND game if they protected the ball. They very easily could be a 5-7 or 6-6 team. That means they are not a "good 8-3" team. If they were 6-6, I would say they are a "good" 6-6 team. Let's not forget that OSU was 6-4 and TTUN was 8-2 in 2001, but the Hokester is no JT and Urban is certainly no LC.

I get all that but they could argue we almost lost to IU (even though the game was in hand, Cal at home, same with Purdue) They are a tough team to scheme for, but i also believe we have to score more than 28 to win, maybe more than 31. There defense is solid, but not spectacular and they key is our offense finishing drives to give the defense a rest. I have like a 42-31 or 49-35.

It's going to be Duhnard and the wrinkles they have with both on the field... Gotta hope it backfires early and Hoke and Borgess tighten up a bit.

    • Pressure Gardner, contain Robinson (which shouldnt be to hard as a RB, or WR if we keep him ass on the ground). Gardner is a rook, and will cave under pressure, He will throw off his back off and make mistakes.

    • My sense is that Bucks need to focus on their own offense, make sure we finish drives, play inspired, etc. That will get us plenty of points. And then all the defense has to do is to contain them so they don't go crazy on us. Also, coaching generally makes a big difference... and our coaches know the full import of this contest. My money on the Buckeyes, easily beating the spread. Don't know if it will be 52-28 or 42-13... but we will cover. Go Bucks.

    • They have gotten much better the last few weeks. It will be a battle. We have to turn up our offense and play lights out on defense. Go Bucks!

    • Offensively, since it's the last game (less injury worries), I think we will see much more of the two back set with both smith and hyde. VERY hard to defend with smith, hyde, and miller all in the backfield. Play action out of the formation will be impossible to defend. As for defense, TACKLE IN SPACE!!

Excellent recipe. Also, our damn safeties have to make sure they get there ass out to the boundary because we know T How and Roby are going to bite on a double move at some point in the game. That has been a huge spot in our zone that has been open a majority of the year and we have been quite fortunate to have teams miss that play (see Abrederis early in the Wisky game.

I haven't read much this week on ZB? Is he going to split a little time with Sabino as the second backer? I can't imagine we play that many snaps in the base 4-3. Not sure if I am super comfortable with Bino in coverage (I know he is coming off the injury but he looked a little like the old Sabino against Wisky)

This. The safeties. That's my biggest concern. I'm so sick of looking at the back end of our secondary and seeing 2 slow-as-molasses glorified 4th and 5th linebackers getting beat deep. It's the reason we've given up so many big plays this year. It's the reason we let Wisconsin back into the game last year. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the excellent hands from Bryant in this year's Wisconsin game to pull down Montee Ball's fumble. I appreciate him finally breaking up a pass on 4th to win the game. The problem is that plays like that aren't the norm. Nobody fears our safeties. They can't catch, they don't always tackle well (half the time, they're too busy trying to hit someone really hard as opposed to actually making sure they're making the tackle), and they are slower than normal safeties. I'm sick of watching another team's running back get through our linebackers and corners and then thinking, "Oh shit, that's going to be six points." If Barnett and Bryant (and maybe even OJ) can play a solid game back there, I think we'll contain them enough to pull away with the win. If they get torched early and often (and let's face it, Devin Gardner is a better passer than Denard, not to mention we've struggled against 3rd string quarterbacks a couple of times this year), I see us losing another shootout (mainly because I think Mattison can prep UM's defense for our offense better than Fickell can prep our defense for their offense). Just my opinion. It probably won't be popular, but it's scUM week and I'd rather be honest with myself at this point in time.

I sure nope the guys are ready this game could be tough or we could just hit them in the mouth early and dominate.

    • While I believe the Bucks have to focus on stopping the scUM offense, I think the bigger concern is being able to move OUR offense. Last week was one of the worst offensive performances of the year. It seemed wiskie had our receivers completely locked down and it also seemed as if we couldn't pass at all. Meatchicken has a better defense than wiskie and we'd better figure it out fast or we'll be embarrassed in the Shoe.

    • Remember the saying about rivalries? Throw out the records. Don't worry about who almost beat UM or OSU had to go to overtime with. This game will come down to exactly what the kids in the interview are talking about...getting lined up, knowing who is where, knowing the situation, executing their technique, playing the next play no matter what happened on the last one and doing that for 60 minutes. Offensively, pressure will need to be applied by formation and motion...out flanking and getting a hat on a hat in the run game as often as possible, Braxton making the right reads in the option game and getting north and south on designed runs. In the pass game, he has to complete over 60% of the short and intermediate stuff and he'll have to complete the long balls when they take a shot. As far as wrinkles...that'll be interesting to see. A coach can always think of a million wrinkles. But what can your QB learn and execute that week while still keeping everything else straight? There's a fine line. We shall see. But as we all know, the offense will go as Braxton goes.
