FRR: Hoke On Poaching Recruits

There is plenty to discuss on the Monday version of Front Row Radio as we're fresh off our trip to Chicago for Big Ten media days.

Brady Hoke

We have interviews with head coaches Brady Hoke from Michigan, Bo Pelini from Nebraska and Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern. Hoke is asked for his thoughts on whether it used to be considered unethical to recruit verbal commitments from other Big Ten schools. Pelini -- a former Ohio State captain -- is asked whether the game against the Buckeyes will mean anything extra to him this season. And Fitzgerald gives extremely-impressive answers when asked about recruiting players that have verbally committed to other Big Ten schools, and what he thinks about Luke Fickell taking over as head coach at Ohio State.

In the News segment, Duane Long and Dave Biddle talk about Chris Wormley picking Michigan, the state of OSU's offensive line recruiting pertaining to the 2012 class, and look ahead to the Buckeyes beginning preseason camp exactly one week from today. What will be the interesting storylines during camp?

Until kids sign on the line in February, its game on. Contrary to poular belief Joe Tiller never said there was a "Gentlemans agreement", it was Tressel that uttered that BS line when asked about Tillers response to RR stealing Roundtree away at the last minute. Tiller called RR a "Snake oil saleman". Of course the worlds biggest hypocrite Tressel after talking about the agreement proceeded to steal Fellows away from Illinois..lmao

Dude why don't you just STFU!?!? It's kina funny that Tiller, Tressel and Fitz all seem to have same feeling. Go back back to your sh!thole up north.

Fitz seems a great coach Northwestern fans have every reason to be proud of that guy

I can see it's time for the Mods to take the trash out and the key here is trash

  • Didn't your parents ever teach you how to act respectfull? If you can't even act like a decent adult then just leave. To stick around just to be a nuisance is more a reflexion of who you are than anything that is said here.

paranoid is a typical douche. She posted a smart azz comment and then edited it acting like she never said anything. She's like a baby covering her eyes acting like everything disappeared. She's a tool and she knows it!!

  • It always makes me laugh when anyone from scum comes on our boards...how pathetic...you go keep dreaming about how brady hoax, aka jabba, is going to rebuild your suck-ass football team! Stay on your own board, weasel!

  • Very upset to hear about Tony Matteo. All we had to do was show some love and offer. He would have surly become a buckeye. He even said he would commit by the end of July, and he did. All I can say to him is best of luck at W. Va.

I just don't understand why the OSU staff didn't offer him. Here's a 16 year old kid who is 6' 5" and 280lbs. Could grow into a really big stud, and looked good on film and at camp. It just blows my mind. What is going to happen with Kozan, davidson, etc.????? If we keep this up, I may have to root for another team. The bucknut staff thinks B J Sugarts is a good player..... Watch him on film. He jumps off side a lot, and the DE's blow by him a lot. Hell, he will never get drafted. I think the staff is looking through rose colored glasses when they say we have some pretty good OL.

Miller will be the QB. Why, because if we put a pocket passer back there, we will lead the league in sacks allowed.

Sorry to ramble on like this but, I'm so upset with the way the Oline recuiting is going.

On today's show, we have interviews with Big Ten head coaches Brady Hoke (Michigan), Bo Pelini (Nebraska) and Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern), plus the News segment.

    To clear up any misunderstanding.

Rich Rod was hired in late 2007 and promptly took 2 Purdue verbals in scUMs 2008 class.

Tiller called Rich Rod a snake oil salesman. Tressel was asked about a gentleman's agreement and he said "only between gentlemen."

In late 2007 - early 2008 Melvin Fellows committed to Illinois after Ron Zook, ala Brady Hoke, offered every Ohioan with a pulse a scholarship. At this point Ohio State hadn't had time to evaluate members of the 2009 class or offer scholarships.

To me there is a difference in offering a player from your home state who jumped the gun in committing to an out of state program AND going into another state and offering players who are committed.

I think OSU has the right to offer any player from Ohio who is committed or not. I don't think OSU has the right to go into Michigan and pester James Ross now that he is committed to scUM. I don't think scUM has the right to come into Ohio and pester Kyle Kalis, Brionte Dunn, or any other player committed to Ohio State.

I don't see any difference at all. It's still poaching. It's kind of funny, coaches only complain about poaching when it happens to them, not a peep out of them when they do it to someone else. Tressel, too.

I am sorry but I see a difference in going after an Ohioan who Ohio State didn't get the opportunity to offer and Michigan going after Ohioans committed to Ohio State.

All Fellows had to say was I am proud to have an Ohio State offer, BUT I am going to stick with my commitment to Illinois. At that point OSU moves on and at least has a chance to offer a 4-5* player from Ohio.

OSU IMO has the right to offer any Ohioan committed or otherwise.

If Lane Kiffin comes into Ohio and offers a 14 year old Freshman and he commits to USC should OSU never have a chance to offer the player when he is a Junior or Senior?

With Hoke it's not just offering it the whole sales job of come up and visit, Ohio State will get hammered by NCAA, you can play at scUM right away whereas at OSU you'll set on the bench for 2-3 years, etc...

Dunn keeps saying he is committed to Ohio State, BUT Hoke keeps pressing. That is the problem I have. If Kalis says NO - leave him alone. If Dunn says NO - leave him alone. If Fellows said NO to OSU would Tressel have stayed on him in the manner Hoke has with Kalis and Dunn?

I see a difference between Fellows and Kalis / Dunn.

Has OSU been pressing James Ross after he committed to scUM? No they went out and got Roberts from Lancaster.

  • Yep, here is the bottom line for me: Fickell appears to possess the principles Tressel was supposed to have, and Hoke appears to be the Punk-Thug coach Rodriguez used to be. This could only mean good things as Doo-Doo-The Hokey-Punky starts deflating after the intial hot-air ballastation.

You're twisting in the breeze now. So poaching is OK as long as it is an Ohio player that OSU was too slow to offer? Hypocritical.

Personally, I see no problem with OSU poaching, or any other school poaching. Signature day is a long season away. The only thing I find distasteful are those who feel it's a bad thing for everyone else but OK for them. You and Tressel think alike.

FWIW, every coach out there is going to negative recruit OSU right now because the program is vulnerable.

    Too slow to offer?

Like I said coaches like Kiffin have gained the commitment of 14 year old Freshmen before.

Zook offered every 2009 Ohioan with a pulse a scholarship to see who would bite. Don't forget OSU was still trying to secure Terrelle Pryor during this time IE 2008 class still not finished until a month after signing day.

Again, if Fellows had no interest in Ohio State and was firmly committed to Illinois all he had to do was say no. He didn't say no and only a month or so later was committed to Ohio State.

Again, Kalis and Dunn both initially said they were committed to Ohio State only to have Hoke / Michigan keep contacting them. Kalis eventually ended up at Michigan. Dunn could as well.

I still think home state programs have some leeway in the matter that out of state programs don't. Again, James Ross is from Michigan and is committed to Michigan. Ohio State lost Rolle, and Homan to graduation, Price to defection, and Newsome and probably Bell to academic / off the field issues. OSU could use another LB. However, I don't think Ross should be contacted. Instead contact should be with LB from Centerville, etc...

If Tommy Schutt committed to Illinois now I think OSU if they haven't already, should stop recruiting him.

I do agree that we are getting to the point with the tactics of Rich Rod from West Virginia, of Ron Zook from Florida, and Brady Hoke from San Diego State that whatever gentleman's agreement that was in place is almost out the window.

It's getting to the point where players are free game until signing day. So, hopefully once the dust has settled with NCAA investigation OSU will begin to act accordingly and go after players it wants like Dodson at Wisconsin, Pittman at Michigan State, etc...

I do think if a player says no to the coach of a program that they should not be allowed further contact with him.

  • I say eff it, I hope Fickell goes after anyone that he feels is worthy of being a Buckeye, even if they are committed elsewhere.

I do not want him downgrading other programs and personally I think he's above that. But if there is a kid that he wants and the kid isn't telling him to piss off.....why not keep selling our program to him ?

Formerly "Buckeye47Fan". Couldn't carry over my handle, why 247 ?

  • According to the Hokey-Punky, Kalis called him and that is why he recruited him. If so. I don't see a probem with it. If he is lying, then the Meow-verines should lose one scholarship on principle.

Nothing new about the M getting players and coaches from Ohio.

If it wasn't for the Ohio talent in both categories they would be another Northwestern.
Schembeckler, Moeller, Hoke, and the list of players who didn't think they could make it at "The OSU" ... went north and got their rears handed to them.
    2011 the streak will continue!

  • If it wasn't for the talent from OHIO ... the (m) would be another Northwestern. Coaches: Schembeckler, Moeller, Hoke

And the players who didn't think they could make the team at "The OSU" went north and got their butts haded to them.

It will be a long sad ride back to Ann Arbor again this year ... as the streak CONTINUES.
