Vrabel On Williams, Spence, More

Nathan Williams

Everyone has pointed out that it's nice having Williams back in the fold.

Mike Vrabel is in his first season as OSU's defensive line coach and he has an embarrassment of riches to work with. We checked in with him about Nate Williams and much more.

    • Honest thoughts from Vrabel...glad to hear. Good article Dave!

Same OC per Phil Steele. Vrabel just must have meant they've gone from a spread to more of a power attack this year.

You simply don't understand football. when a team throws the ball on 3 step drops, there won't be much pressure. The story is we allowed 10 points.

Give up on it HuskerBuckeye it would be like rationalizing with a 2 year old.
Beauty of the internet is free speech and anyone can spew stupid. I would imagine the coaches are making the Freshman earn their playing time conforming to the team concepts of playing.
I can still remember the OSUmidwest types saying Urban will play Freshman after all, Urban plays the best players... lol.
Blitzing on all plays with the other team using 5 receiver sets and OSU not needing to ain't going to happen.
It is a game of picking your spots to show aggression and not allowing the team to score points. Oh well I am doing what you did Huskerbuckeye trying to rationalize with the impossible.
The Freshman will get their opportunities when they earn it.

    • But we all know that Miami should have scored more than 10 points due to inept receivers at times. Had those balls been caught then Miami would have scored at least 24 points and the outcome of 56-10 would have been much different. Their mistakes really hurt them. Coverage seemed very soft to me and didn't improve significantly in the 2nd half. And of course we got burned on a couple of long passes. No sour grapes here I just don't understand our defensive schemes at times. Looked like shades of the past with pass coverage.

    • Blitz packages will increase with competition. They weren't needed vs Miami. Why show more than necessary?

    • Nice read I'm very excited nate played and how well he played. The frosh dlinemen looked great out there.

I'm losing confidence in Vrabel. The linebackers sucked last year and how you start J.T. Moore in the Leo over Steve miller, spence is beyond me. I was expecting a bull rush and I saw a team having trouble getting pressure against a Mac team.

I wouldn't say I'm losing faith in the coaches, but I hope they start to see the importance of having your best rushers on the field, and not just starting an upperclassman because he is an upperclassman and giving those young guys alot of opportunities now so that they get plenty of film of them and let them make their mistakes now when it is not as critical and get coached up and be ready BEFORE we start Big Ten play. Last year Fickell missed alot of opportunities with Braxton Miller. But hey that is what created the need to get a real HC in UFM.

The funnier part of this post that it implies that Vrabel makes these decisions on his own. The DCs decide the two deep with input from the other two position coaches. Fickell has been watching the DL as closely as anybody, including Vrabs.

      The best players play.

    • No one said anything about blitz packages, how about just having your best front 4 pass rushers on the field early on insteading of waiting and putting alot of pressure on your secondary. I think some wanted to see Spence and Washington start against this team since it was known they were pretty one dimensional toward passing. They did end up getting the only sacks in the game. Probably would have had more if they had been used earlier in the game. Just sayin.

So you want to start Washington ahead of Hankins, since they play the same position? Spence and Washington will be eased into more playing time when needed. Since this Saturday's game is against a running team I doubt if Washington or Spence get more time. I would want big Hank playing against the run.
I remember John Cooper saying the dink and dunk passing game will rarely beat you and I thought about that against Miami.
Spence and Washington will be very good players eventually, not their time presently.

I agree. We rushed 4 with little or no success. Admittedly because of the good execution of 3 step drop. The few times we did bring somebody it looked effective. When we rushed 3 and dropped 8 receivers were still open. On the other side of the coin, the linebackers got good experience in pass coverage. It is a young group in the middle. And the pass production defintely declined from the 2nd qtr on.

    • I will put my trust in Vrabel and Fickell over all the unemployed coaches on this site. I, too was frustrated over the lack of pressure but then you can'r stop a two or three three count pass with pressure. It is like touch football . . .the QB throws the ball before anyone can get get to him . . .all it takes is a little bump to slow the rush just a bit.
The second half did change a little and a few blitzes resulted in some pressure and sacks . . .and the Miami QB was a little less calm.
The Miami style offense is the toughest thing in the world for a physical defense to stop. It is like being gummed to death. But don't think that fear of our backs were not responsible for some of those drops.

Although the UCF team may be stronger than Miami, they may be a better fit for our defense. Go Bucks!

I hear you, but my thing is why do they wonder where the pass rush is when you have the 2 best rushers sitting on the bench. Don't get me wrong, love what Hankins and Goebel do against the run, but when you see you need an inside pass rush we need to make the change alot quicker. The best way you help your secondary is to create a pass rush from your front 4. Hankins and Goebel will never get anything more than a "coverage sack". They will never beat the opposing lineman off the snap and get into the QB's face. They may get a sack when the WR's are covered up and the pocket breaks down and then they get to the QB. I would like to see Simon at SSDE, Schutt, Washington, Spence or Williams.

    • Connect the dots sherlock, your right their pass production went down in the 2nd half (same time when finally started playing Spence and Washington) and it was players from the defensive front that got the ONLY sacks in the game not linebackers. You can create pressure with an inside pass rush even on a three step drop. If you heard Coach Meyer yesterday, it was after he had a conversation with Fickell that Washington and Spence got put into the game. He was probably downplaying it but I imagine it was more "hey get these guys in the game".

    • Let's not forget that it was the first game of the season. The coaches are just feeling for what they have with a few players. The lineups for offense and defense will start to shape up in the upcoming weeks. But the score this week couldve been different. Miami had lots of drops including a sure touchdown. They easily couldve had 20-24 points. We still win easily but not quite as convincingly. That said the coaches now have some tape to study and should have a better idea of who can perform against UCF. Go Bucks!
