Big Board 2012: Wide Receivers

Ohio State Buckeyes

Philly Brown, Devin Smith and Michael Thomas could be leaders for the receiving corps in 2012

OSU's wide receiver group was much maligned in 2011. Most of them return in 2012, though, and new position coach Zach Smith is expecting much improvement.

    • Great article steve these are why I'm here and why bucknuts is the best site going.

    • Thanks Steve. Awesome analysis. I really hope Verlon makes it back to full speed. I think he would have made a big difference last year if he'd been on the field all season. He seems to have a nack for getting into space.

I think this unit will be considered as maybe one of the strongest on the team by the end of this coming season. Thomas will be another playmaker who continues from his Sprng game accomplishments. Smith and Spencer are gonna get their touches too. We are not far from giving the oposition sleepless nights.

I know we haven't heard much of his recruitment lately, but the Quick kid from Louisville could end up an All-American if he decided to come to Ohio State. Not to mention National Champion LOL

    • Thanks for the comments. I think a standout WR would be a cherry on top of this 2013 class.

    • Good read. I'm excited to see Micheal Thomas after his showing in the spring game and to see what Devin Smith can do with a year under his belt and Brax hopefully putting his receivers in better spots.

    • Will be interesting to see if Thomas can translate spring success to the games in the fall.

    • it's tempting to just totally blame them - and to be fair they really did suck. Incredible bad - one dropped ball after another in crucial situation after crucial situation - no doubt the worst group of receivers in the 20 years I've been following OSU -they just completely sucked. But plenty of blame goes to the horrible coaching of Jim Bollman, and the inexperience of B Miller. What was really perplexing were the drops by Stoneburner - he made almost as many critical FU's as Corey Brown. In any event THEY WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR- now that we have real coaches again and they have some experience. OSU may shock this year. If we are lucky Epitopolous surprises. But most likely he'll take a year or two to get there like Sanzenbacher. Thomas is a stud.

Wow. Been awhile since I've seen Bollman mentioned. I had almost forgotten about him. Almost. LOL

I hope we see Thomas catch a lot of passes this year, and see Smith develop into a consistent big play maker.

    • Vernon Reed is playmaker we should not forget about. If he recovers properly, he might be a difference maker with Brown, Smith and Spencer. Like Thomas displayed in the Spring game, he runs good routes and finds seams in the Defense. If they both do this next season, then we all of a sudden have short range slot relievers to compliment the deep threats Smith and Brown provide. You add a year of experience, bulk, and a competent offensive coaching staff with an actually respectable offensive scheme, the reciever position becomes an asset to the team and a decent threat to opposing defenses.
