Spring Storylines: Miller And The O

Braxton Miller

Miller's upper-body mechanics are sound. Footwork? Not so much, at least not yet.

We have our third and final installment of Ohio State's biggest storylines during spring practice: The development of quarterback Braxton Miller and his wide receivers.

    • Thanks. Always good, with lots of energy. You and Duane, as they say, bring it.

    • When, not if, Braxton can put it together, this offense will be NASTY!

    • 2nd year under a super star coach. This is the year where everybody has full buy in and the whole team and staff go all out for the championship.

    • I read, and believe, that Miller needs to be able to put more touch on the ball. Most of his throws appear to be on a rope, like it's being muscled in there. That's a bit of a cheat in that it takes some of the pressure off the quarterback in terms of ball placement and preventing interceptions, but it puts additional pressure on the receivers when they do not have time to react and/or adjust. I'm not sure how this might be related to footwork, but I'm looking to see if his throwing progresses to the point that he can lead the receivers a bit more and put more arc on the ball and still have confidence that the ball is going to get to where it needs to be when it needs to be there. He's made these throws, but I'm hoping he can make more of them as he progresses..

agree, the results from last year are evidence enough to the players the potential is there, not concerned about the losses on Defense, I think we see a much stronger unit this year..

    • Were the reports that Braxton spent time with George Whitfield [noted QB guru] true? If so that could be a big plus. I feel that Braxton's ability to get deeper into his progressions will be a huge boost to the receiver corps. It's tough for them to show what they can do if he is locking onto just one or two receivers

    • I agree with Griff and if we have a potent passing game it keeps the D honest.

Yes, those were absolutely true. He didn't spend a lot of time with him (3 days I think) but stuff like that can only help.

Thanks very much. And not just because you mentioned me in the same breath with the great Duane, but that helps too.

    • Agree 32buck, with another year in the system for the returning guys on O and the additions of the young skilled, speed guys coming in it should be fun. The fact that Braxton worked with Whitfield should pay huge dividends. I love the fact he did that on his own, it shows how dedicated he is and how bad he wants to be the best. I think we are on the verge of being unstopable on O and getting very deep and talented on D. I can't wait

    • Every time I read about Braxton's passing game I think back to his freshman year and grimace over the thought of where he could be right now with better coaching then. I am expecting a breakout year in the passing attack that is going to shock a lot of people. I think not only will Braxton improve dramatically, but the receivers are going to also show a lot of improvement. Of course this is all assuming Braxton can improve on his ability to find his secondary receivers (a real weakness in 2012 imho).

Ya know, even though he was out there playing in an extremely-vanilla offense, likely not getting good coaching, at least he got to get the feel for the speed of the game that season. I'm convinced that allowed Braxton to progress as much as he did from one year to the next. And now in his third year -- especially it being his second in the Meyer/Herman offense -- I think there's a good chance he'll explode. And if he does, OSU is going to be one hell of a tough team for anyone to beat.

With the cake walk schedule we have he should be able to explode... time will tell what we actually face this season as team's can and do rise to the occasion. 12-0 and thinking we should cruise through the nonconference OSU will have a rather large bullseye on their back as teams will want to knock us off NC contention.

    • Offensive improvement is really as simple as Braxton completing more passes...get up to the 63-65% level and we'll be a major force nationally.

    • Miller needs better zone reads for this offense to click consistantly!

That's a fantastic point. And I'm sure in Year Two of this offense he'll feel much-more comfortable and will do a better job with his reads. At times, I'm convinced he decided before the play whether he's keeping it or handing it off. (Which is very similar to a QB deciding before the snap where he's throwing the ball no matter what.)

    • That THIRD threat is what the entire offense needs. When you have that one more threat then it stretches the D to the limit. I think the other thing that is going to be important is for a couple of the WR's to really step up. We know Braxton can run like a deer, the RB's are really good....now we need the slot back/RB to be a huge threat and a couple WR to stretch it vertically and that is constant pressure on the D every single snap.

    • It's exciting to think of where Miller could end up as a player. I am sure we will see more improvements from him in footwork, zone reads, as well as the run option reads. We will have plenty of weapons......

This will be fun to watch

    • I keep hearing about miller going to work with a qb guru in California, but have never heard a story on the outcome and areas of work to be done!
