There Is No Anti-OSU Media Bias

Cam Newton

Some tattoos and the cover-up that came after just do not compare with Cam Newton's $180,000 salary for last year, nor the blatant recruiting violations about to come down on Oregon. I agree with that.

According to Duane Long, the reason for incessant coverage of Ohio State's current problems comes down to simple Michael Corleone wisdom.

    • Whether or not it is "just business", if you are biased because you are a competitor or just don't like Ohio State, you are still biased.

    • ESPN's greed is apparent. As usual follow the money and you will find the source of controversy. It's also sort of upsetting that the B10 network doesn't do more to expand it's coverage of our conference football games and basketball games. They have 3 channels on DirecTV it would be nice if they'd use them all on Saturday! I can't stand college football commentaries on ESPN, they are usually biased and lacking of fact!

Can you honestly tell me that ESPN's coverage of USC's scandal has been similar and on the same scale as their coverage of OSU's scandal?

EDIT: I just finished reading the article. I agree 100%. ESPN is going after OSU to damage the Big Ten Network.

    • You should write a book on this! Very interesting take Duane. I cannot wait to dive into this a bit deeper.

    • This is exactly what LeCharles Bentley said in his radio show isn't it. He even stated it was about money. ESPN is going after tOSU not because its tOSU its because tOSU is the biggest dog in the B10.

Agree. Duane has identified the reasons behind the bias, but that does not deny that bias exists...

    • Duane, I have to totally disagree with your logic. ESPN and the other media for years have had a running battle with OSU over their style of football, the apparent nonchalant attitude of Tressel with the media, and money/prestige war that goes along with competing conferences and teams. For a long time I have watched ESPN debate the level of OSU when it comes to other named teams. OSU always is put as "second fiddle" Remember the hype when OSU vs. Notre Dame in a previous bowl game. OSU had no chance against the highly touted ND team. After A J Hawk and co. dismantled ND i never heard any ....Oh..I must have been wrong...comments. Taking aim at OSU shows that ESPN can play a Nancy Grace and make one believe that EVIL lurks at OSU. Admit it...ESPN is Biased. Have been and most likely will be.

USC is Pac-10 which means USC is in the ESPN back pocket. Can't damage their own product. ESPN hired three Ohio State alums and made them key parts of their college football coverage. If someone who makes decisions at ESPN does not like Ohio State those hires make no sense. ESPN does not hate or love Ohio State. This attack is all about money. There are no competitors out there for ESPN. Just because the Big Ten Network is about Big Ten sports does not mean it could not get a foothold and start expanding. At some point it has to occur to some smart guy that college football should have its own network and cut ESPN out altogether.

ESPN is also in bed with the SEC and Pac10. Thats the reason that the USC story or now the Oregon story has gotten no play to go along with anything that may happen with Texas or any school in the SEC. They just will not cover it like they will the B10.

    • I don't see how ESPN could possibly make the Big 10 Network fail. While ratings of particular games could fluctuate, the Big 10 Network gets money from every cable subscriber every month and I don't see how ESPN could sabotage that revenue stream. Likewise, I don't see how the Big 10 could inflict great damage on ESPN as they have plenty of programming should the Big 10 leave the network. If the Big 10 was smart, they'd leverage their assets to build a strong partnership with ESPN rather than go to war.

My thoughts exactly! No other school has soooo many news anchors AGAINST it! From Mark May to even that recruiting "expert" Luginbill, they never shy away from bashing the Bucks or talking down their recruiting classes. Even when the media does say something about Reggie Bush, he gets a pass and is even celebrated because he was from USC and dated a Kardashian! On the other hand, Pryor has been nothing short of the incarnation of Satan! No media bias? Love ya Duane, but I will respectfully disagree with ya on this one!

    • Those guys were all hired (or at least 2 of the 3), before the B10 Network was formed. Sorry.

Explain the huge ticker headlines, and front page coverage of the Kalis UM commitment? I haven't seen that kind of coverage for the #1 overall player, let alone the 6th rated OT in country.

Almost like ESPN was gleeful that we lost a top rated OH player...

    • Even when Michigan got in some trouble for Xtra practice espn ran with it - they have an obvious vendetta against the Big-10, I think it does all come down to $$$$ and espn wanting a monopoly on the sports world.

Ohio State is a big deal. That simple. We are front page news. We are headline news. When we went public with our offer of penalties CNN broke in on their regular broadcast and reported it.

Agreed, think about it. B10 is now in bed with Fox. Lets say in 5 years when the ESPN deal is over, the B10 does a huge deal to move games to Big Fox, FX and other Fox Stations, then Fox realizes this is huge bank for us. They then go out of there way to start bidding up the renewal contracts of SEC or Pac10 or any of the other BCS conference to move games to there stations. Now you have ESPN making alot less money overall and paying even more money out for contracts to any of the conferences they sign to a deal.

ESPN is doing a hatchet job on tOSU only because they are in the B10. IF what happened at tOSU happend at scUM, they would be feeling the same heat.

I also, disagree with one point though Duane. Herbie, Speils and Smith have been at ESPN for years now. They were hired before this fight started. They won't fire them aslong as they don't give them a reason too. LeCharles might just be canned pretty soon as he is the first former Buckeye that has a job with ESPN that has spoken out about whats going on. Herbie and the rest won't have jobs for long if they actually decided to call a Spade a Spade, but they will tote the company line or just not say anything public to keep there jobs.

    • I agree the bias is rooted in the BTN, but it is still bias. I think Michigan's few too many practice hours received more attention than USC and Auburn combined, and Michigan is not even relevant. Any successful B10 team will be targeted. No one ever said that ESPN's bias was born of some personal dislike on the part of a producer or two. Nice try Duane, but you didn't get there.

What does when they were hired have to do with ESPN being biased against Ohio State???

If we have the SEC (the OTHER SEC - the Securities and Exchange Commission) investigating 'monopolies' like Microsoft and Google, why aren't they investigating ESPN?
