2013 CLASS

  • If we don't procure Quick and/or Bell as it appears, is really good.

    Top shelf.

But I'd be less than honest if I said I wasn't a tad disappointed.

The way the 2012 class ended with Meyer, the success on the feild this year, - I was thinking we would collect 5 stars, have to beat them off with a stick.

And I know stars are not a 100% corallary to success.

I'm thinking I was a year early with my expectations and I think 2014 will be off the charts.

I do realize much can happen btw now and signing day, but we have missed on quite a few of our top targets at various positions (not that who we replaced them with are not fine prospects).
I think Bosa, Elliot, Mitchell are 3 kids who are top 50 type prospects but the class as I project it now does have a decent number of low 4 and 3 star players (again, that doesn't proclude them from being great players).

    Thoughts?

  • My thought is being disappointed at mythical rankings is silly. Makes you look egotistical and ridiculous. There is no possibly way 247, Rivals, whoever knows more than people like Urban friggin Meyer so chill out.

  • Never said they did McBrutus.

What I am saying is that we have not procurred as high a % of players Meyer himself targeted as at the top of his board.

In some positions I don't think it really matters like LB - we offered about 10 kids who opted elsewhere before we end up (possibly) with Mitchell and Johnson.

At other like WR and OL, I think we are down pretty far in terms of who we initially targeted.

My guess is you have no historical data to base it on and you're going solely by your own "intelligence" in the matter. Every coach strikes out a lot until they get their guys, this is no different.

  • I agree that coming off the success of the season i was really hoping to hit a grand slam in recruiting and maybe walk away with three of the four of quick, mitchell, bell and dorian johnson. I was willing to be satisfied with only landing two of the four... now it looks as if theres a good chance we will only land one (mitchell) so it is disapointing. I am most disappointed with Quick. A top flight WR is what I wanted most to make this offense the absolute best it can be but I just think we have to be happy that we had a complete stud in Jalin Marshall be in state this year. Same with Marshon Lattimore next year. Our number one biggest need will be taken care of with Jalin filling the "percy harvin role" and just have to be happy with that for now. Of course we can still land them so its not over yet but we can have the preliminary conversationg of what it we dont.

If you're Quick and you have the chance to be a WR at home with Bridgewater or under Miller, who would you choose? Not the least bit surprising if Quick goes with Louisville. I'm not disappointed in this year's crop because it's all so normal the way it's playing out.

Yea i understand why he would want to stay home too and he probably will, but you can also look at it from the perspective that Strong will be leaving and he can play in an Urban Meyer spread offense where he knows he will be getting the ball a ton. But miller is a running qb so the top flight WR will be hard to close with.

I'm not sure you could ever convince Quick he would get the ball a ton in this offense. History with Meyer shows no one really gets the ball a ton cause it's so spread out. Bridgewater is the key, I think, not Strong. Quick could make himself a high NFL pick with Teddy throwing to him.

  • Yes we have lost out on some really highly rated kids. When you're going after five star type of recruits that are oos even the best recruiters are going to strike out because they're competing against the other best recruiters and programs in the nation. Sometimes kids just want to stay home.

I think there is a lot of truth in what you say and your disappointment is not unfounded. However, I think of it this way, would we have even been in the mix to get the guys on top of Meyer's board if it wasn't for Meyer recruiting them? Imagine if Bollman was still around....would Quick or Stevens even consider OSU even with a great recruiter like Tressel? Now, we are pulling kids out of Maryland, Florida (which isn't new), Virginia, North Carolina, California, Texas, etc. I am not sure we ever had this type of national appeal. I think the disappointment comes from the fact Meyer has created higher expectations on the recruiting front. We cast a much wider net now....there will be a lot of disappointments but a lot more surprises (like Baugh).

  • Just a thought....given the length of the recruiting cycle, I don't think the effects of a 12-0 season hit 3 months later during on national signing day. The urban hire and 12-0 season should start to get great results in the 2014 class. You get some 2013 bump but not the full effect. If we throw a 13-1 or 14-0 on the board next year, 2014 and beyond will be crazy.

If kids really focus for the first time on recruiting their sophomore year and that first impression has a real effect on them, the kids that were sophomores when urban was hired are 2014s and the ones that were sophomores during 12-0 are 2015s. The backlog is getting stronger....and I like it.

After seeing Quick on TV this year, he was my top WR to go get. However, I agree that going somewhere where he has a QB throwing to him constantly is the deciding factor. Quick to the 'Ville unfortunately IMO. Hope I'm wrong for sure.

Have you seen Meyer's board to confirm he has missed on the players at the top of his board? Oh wait, you haven't. Nevermind, your usual crap isn't worth commenting on anymore.
