The People's Champion
After all, Miami should have beaten OSU in 2003, everyone said so. You are correct. Alabama didn't do anything this year to justify being in the NCS. Didn't win their division or their conference and, oh yeah, lost to the number one team on Alabama's home turf.
Good writeup, bax. re: Decker, more than any other school, kids seem to sign with ND because of ND - it's not the HC, OC, DC, or position coach. It's the school, NBC, and End Zone Interception Jesus. Once they are locked in, it's pretty solid. I wouldn't expect another Lawrence Wilson miracle.
Great column as usual, Bax. One comment about JT. While I agree that Urban is a shark with recruiting, I don't believe JT was passive. He was an unbelievable recruiter as well. Just look at the number of pros that he recruited. He did not merely rely on Ohio either. Just look at the number of out of state stars. He had an uncanny ability to look at a player and see potential where others did not. That is how he found so many three star players that turned into some of the best in osu history (hawk, JL, jenkins). That is one of the most important ascpects of recruiting. Obviously we want as many 5 stars as possible, but if you disregard the biased recruiting services and treated this like it was 20 years ago without the internet, we would have looked at JTs classes in an even better light when we saw the eventual results. That being said, I am loving every minute of the urban recruiting frenzy.
Damn, we really need some OT. I cant understand why we are like this. wait Bowman!!
Great article!!!! I must admit, when I first heard the rumors about Kalis reconsidering, I had the typical reaction of hell no, scUM can keep him. But after calming down and really thinking about, if he decided to make the switch back, I'd welcome him with open arms. We really need OTs, and it would show that his heart was truly in Columbus the whole time. It should be an example to these kids to not make quick decisions and to let the process play out before ultimately deciding.
Glad I am not the only buying this "look how great they are" bs about Bama. Give another team a shot. Bama had theirs (at home no less) and LOST.
Matt, I don't disagree with anything you said but if my memory serves me correctly there was a blurb on one of these sites that stated that Coach Meyer was not going after Kalis. Has this changed and I missed it?
With UM's staff now in place, I wonder why Heacock wasn't considered. I think he did a heck of a job, many awards and consistenly top ten defenses. Plus he gave Urban a great opportunity when UM was just getting started in the coaching world. Any insight into the reasoning?
I grit my teeth every time someone says AJ Hawk was a 3 star. I subscribe to multiple recruiting sites. One of those sites had AJ Hawk listed among their Top 100 players his senior year of high school. I assume the other 3 sites demoted him due to his injury. That other site also ranked Mangold as the #2 center in the nation and Santonio Holmes as #1 for receivers averaging at least 15 yds per catch. 'tone was a 3 star on the other sites. Successful coaches may use the star system as a starting point but they use their own two eyes for confimation. Tress had excellent judgement. Urban has excellent judgement. In the end, I believe Urban's staff will be the best at initial recruiting in the history of Buckeye football. Whether the players are successful in athletics, academics and citizenship is the great unknown. I have my fingers crossed. Go Bucks!!!
I'm with ya Bax. That filth will not air in my house.
Give the Kalis thing a rest. I haven't heard anything coming from his mouth that says he is even interested in OSU. I think this is wishfull thinking and pure speculation. He seems to have bought into the Ann Arbor College party line. Unless something changes publicly, there does not seem to be anything to see here.
I really liked the first LSU - Ala. game, but I won't watch this one. I think it is very unfair to LSU to say they have to beat Ala. twice to be NC. Ala. had their shot, at their place and couldn't get it done. Big 12 cahmp Okla.St. who routed Okla. vs LSU, since we can't have a playoff.
Let's face it, Kalis is a 17 year old, still a kid. We've all made decisions that we regret. If he decides to visit and once again become a Buckeye, them OSU fans should welcome him with open arms. If he stays with his commit to UM then wish him well. Its crazy to treat kids otherwise.
I want to punish and destroy any team we come against! I want tOSU to be hated because of their success! But going after Strobel, I'm not sure I agree with that!
