Andrew Sweat applying for medical redshirt

  • Ari Wasserman @AriWassermanBSB 7 mins
Andrew Sweat is applying for a medical redshirt from a knee injury from his sophomore season. Long shot but worth the attempt.

    Just saw this tweet.

  • What is the basis for his appeal?

    Somebody refresh my memory.

DId he RS as a true frosh?
Did he play on ST as a RE frosh?

How much time did he miss his soph year?

We could certainly use him at LB.

Depsite having an Elite OL, I doubt we can have an elite D with Sabino and Klein starting.
But other then Shazier and maybe Grant our options are limited.

  • Umm I'm go have to hope he doesn't get it. We already short on schollies and he wasn't that good.

  • I hate it for the kid and I'm not bashing him as a person but it would not be a big benefit to this team even if he got it granted

    Sam1

  • No shit, he was hurt....

    sinuay

  • Dude played in six games and recorded 15 tackles, I'm gonna go with no

    tbdbitlbuckeye

  • Wouldn't mind seeing AS return. No substitution for experience and he has the intelligence to learn from it.

    lanpar

  • You kidding?? When we have one good LB coming back? It would be great to have him back. He played solid and was our best LBer this until Shazier started playing.

  • Per wikipedia a waiver can be granted if athlete appears in less than 30% of competitions with none coming after midway point of the season.

I dont agree with you very often but +1...he was more hype than anything else. He played pretty decent as a JR last year but this year he left a lot to be desired. Time to get some young, athletic LBs in there...

  • He played for whole yrs. No he should b done ..i know he played nine games this season.....reminds me of moeller.....it wont b a spot for him with new lb def. Philosophy....sabino should shine with new coaching/schemes...shazier too....and Grant will probably b ready for middle full time. He was good player...but evolution is starting.

  • My God Alpha you are dull.

You were at the forfront of the "'Bino should be startin he got mad skilllzzzzzzz, why the staff be frontin" posse.
And that was 3 years ago.

Sweat is by no means great but he is by all means one of our top 2 LB's on a roster devoid of LB's.
It is not like we have Hawk, Carpenter, Shalegal, Dandrea, Kudla coming in wither.

  • Then there's no way, he recorded stats in six and accumulated them through the 7th game

He will be better in a straight up 4-3 too.

  • I just don't see any basis for Sweat receiving another year. Although I don't think Sweat is great, it never hurts have senior leadership back. Sweat is a steady, reliable player.

Do we really want to have to tell one of these 5 star studs no because we want to keep Andrew Sweat around one more season (especially one who could give us a Shazier impact next year)? Have we not learned from Moeller?

I would be willing to roll the dice on Sabino/Klein stepping up alongside Shazier or hopefully Whiting, Cromwell, or Grant come along.

Sweat has been marginal and injury prone his whole career. Besides against wisky last year I haven't seen nothing much from him.

    AlphaBuckeye06

  • Those of you spouting off that you don't want him back, who are your three starters next year? Alpha, considering your Sabino obsession, is it not fair to state that you are not very good at evaluating LB talent?

Yea and all those people who thought Bauserman (like Fickell) and Moeller was good shouldn't be evaluating talent either. Moeller was horrible and unfortunately received a 6 year to stink up the joint. How many people was on his sack to only use his previous injuries as a "excuse."

I hear what you are saying. If there were more linebackers on our recruiting board I could be on the other side of this argument. I just don't see a linebacker out there paying attention to us that I think could make a difference other than Markus. I would rather have a veteran like Sweat back in the middle of a 4-3 defense flanked by Shazier and maybe Grant. I have no faith that Klein and Sabino will step up. We are not talking about young guys. That the light will come on, that they will read the game better and make better decisions and keep themselves clean of blockers suddenly, after all this time in the program, I can't get there.

But it can be granted when there is a misdiagnosis. I think this is what happened to another LB in the past. Mike D'Anrea, perhaps? He got a med RS when there was a misdiagnosis and he continued to play. Then there was a second opinion or re-exam and they said that he should have been shut down when the original injury happened.

    So, it's possible.

Sabino should shine? I dunno man....have serious doubts about that - hope you are right! Maybe the lightbulb will come on. Would be great if Grant ready to step up.

Sabino is an physically gifted as any LB we have ever had. But he's just not getting it and has zero instincts. He's a tremendous athlete who happens to play LB. But he's not a LB.

I think it became quite clear as this season wore on that the injuries had taken thier toll on Moeller and he was simply not the player he was.

He was EASILY the best player in the back seven last season before he tore his pec, and to imply that he was always the player he was this season, as you are, is totally disingenuous.

And I've yet to see the crowd that ever though Bauserman was good.

    Jcoz

  • Completely agree with Duane. On pure numbers alone, you want him back. Combine that with he will be our 2nd best LB and it becomes a no-brainer.
