Anyone else got a good feeling about Fickell?

  • We are so beholden to seniority that young coaches like Fickell rarely get this type of opportunity unless there are unusual circumstances (see Pat Fitzgerald). Experience is invaluable, but sometimes the right guy at the right time is the one who everyone sells short as not ready for the challenge.

Adversity brings out the true character of a person and although it's early, Fickell has stepped up and delivered. Initially, I thought Urban Meyer would be the best fit and he is still a tremendous get. However, as others have pointed out, there are many uncertainties due to Urban's health. We are probably looking at a maximum of 4-5 years that Urban Meyer would be able to coach. I want to hire a coach that will be around for at least a decade.

Youth and inexperience is the only criticism I have heard with Luke Fickell. He has steadily worked his way up and his impact on the defense cannot be understated after the Mark Snyder debacle. The Cooper era, the Tressel era, and the R-Rod experiment in Michigan highlight the importance of hiring a coach that gets what it is to be a Buckeye. Fickell is an Ohio guy, he played at TOSU, and has been working his way up at TOSU. Fickell is a perfect fit at TOSU. He is not flash, but all substance thus far. Similar to Coach Tressel, his love for the University is not in question.

I believe that his relationship with Coach Tressel and the addition of another experienced staff member could help fill the experience gap for Fickell. In the short term and the long term, the continuity in the staff will ensure that prospective recruits will still have a relationship with the coaches. I would expect that Fickell will keep the younger assistants: Haynes, Johnson, Drayton (mainly recruiting). The elder staff will probably retire as expected and Fickell can infuse this staff with more youthful energy. Don't discount the importance of younger staff members being able to connect with recruits and the overall importance of recruiting.

Hungry to mark his mark, I expect there will be changes where Fickell will put his stamp on TOSU. We know with Fickell that he will stick with us through sanctions. This is his dream job and his efforts show he is ready to seize the opportunity. Coach Fickell will need to show results. Despite what happens with Pryor this team has the ability to go 8-3 or 9-2. If Coach Fickell does that then retaining him should be a no brainer. I feel that we have a special opportunity with Fickell and I just hope that Gene Smith (or whoever replaces him) gives him a chance. This will not be an easy season, but I get the feeling that it is the start of something special.

I am 100% behind Coach Fickell. Go Bucks!!

  • I think we're in really good shape with Fickell... Time will tell but I truly think he could be the man for the job.... Tressel is leaving the program stocked with talent, so that won't be an issue. The kids need to believe in him and follow his leadership. If they do that, the team can win 10 games on talent alone.... That may be enough for Fickell to keep the job. He is a hell of a recruiter. Let's hope he is an equally good coach....

  • Of course we don't know if there will be additional suspensions, altering the win-loss outlook. I'll look at whether this team is competitive in every game. For ANY coach, winning 8 or 9 games is a monumental achievement under the circumstances. My hope is that Fickell is a serious candidate for the job. For the reasons stated, I feel he has a tremendous opportunity to be successful here.

    You can't handle the truth

  • Many of us saw Fickell as the heir apparent back in 2003. People have loved Fickell for a long time. He's been our best recruiter. He was the special teams coach during our best special teams years. And a defensive coach during our best defensive years. Including co-DC. From what I've heard he is a vocal leader. And the players love him. Not in the sense that they love their good friend. But more like how troops love their CO. They know he's going to get them to where they need to be. And if they listen to him, they'll be in good shape.

The ONLY negative against Fickell is his lack of HC experience. That is it. There is nothing else. Otherwise, he is a Tressel protege who embodies everything we look for as a Buckeye Head Football Coach. And he is as 100% Buckeye as it gets. He's got more Buckeye in him than anyone available.

I love Fickell. And if he shows he can succeed with all that is weighing against him right now, then I will want him permanently as our coach. If he does have to go somewhere else for a stint, I am confident that one day he will eventually be our HC.

I have to agree, he's a DeSales grad, played for OSU, knows everything about the system, the school, he's passionate, and can flat out recruit! Good luck Luke! He's a players coach!

  • I've got nothing but love for Luke...but he's got a weak hand. Frosh QB. Assume some of the tat 5 won't be here, and this team is as young as we've seen in a while. Bunch of drama and people saying he can stay if he goes 10-2...Going 10-2 with these guys would be a great job if Woody could do that, expectations are sooo high in Columbus(Thank you Tress)

  • Fickell needs to get an Offensive Coordinator...immediately. Then he needs to get an OL coach immediately. I would move Bolls to assistant HC.

Fickell is one heck of a recruiter. I don't really care who takes over as long as they win and don't get us into trouble.

I think he should clean house with players that have clouds remaining over their heads.

I think he and Meyer are the logical choices for HC next year. Good luck Luke.

    Noahbuckeye

  • We all have our opinions, but I can tell you, the opinion that matters the most right now.... is the players .... and they love him, they want to WIN everygame this year... in the hopes of righting the wrongs, self pride, team bond building and .... to keep the current staff on board going into 2012....

So, it doesn't matter who we all want or dream for as the HC, they players definitely have a hand in this .. IF they go out and WIN!

  • I was telling my wife last night that I hope they remove the interim tag and allow him to hit the recruiting board hard.

He is a die hard Buckeye, carries many great characteristics that Tressel has on and off the field, is hungry, and most importantly is young enough that he could be a long time coach (Paterno, Fitzgerald).
