Bax.. I agree that Urban has brought a renewed resurgence to OSU but I am not convinced Meyer will have a more successful career @Ohio State than Tressel.. Tressel was as good as it gets. Is recruiting better under Urban than under JT? Is Marotti better than Lichter? Is OSU better with Warriner rather than Bollman? Is the overall coaching staff better? Will they attract better athletes?

We will have that answer in 10 years. Beat 106-22 and it's better. Win more than 7 B-10 titles and it's better. Win more than 1 national championship and it's better. Win more than 6 bowl games and it's better.

What Jim Tressel accomplished at Ohio State is pretty heady stuff. I think the world of Urban Meyer and think he is the best coach in the game, and in 10 years we will see about that statement. It will be VERY, VERY hard to surpass what Jim Tressel accomplished at Ohio State. The bar isn't high, but rather it is in the clouds.

Urban will have a hard time beating that record. It will be fun watching him try though.

Thanks for writing this, gessig. I get tired of blind admiration for Meyer. No doubt, he's had a great off season, but the proof of the pudding is in season.

There a number of things I worry about with Meyer:

    1. A no-huddle, hurry-up offense is great as long as you are getting 1st downs, but, if you have few 3 and outs against a ball control team, and you run the risk of wearing your defense out. In that case OSU may need all 20 of the DLineman on the roster.

    2. Spread offenses can score lots points, but they don't prepare their own defense to face a power team like Wisky or Bama. Defenses that see the spread day in and day out tend to be called "finesse" defenses (code for soft).

    3. I am not convinced that Meyer had enough time off to cured his "burn out" issues.

    4. Tressel accomplished all gessig lists above while putting the welfare of the players first. Will Meyer be as good at preparing the players for their future as Tressel was?

There are other issues that worry me, but those 4 are enough for now.

I am not saying these WILL turn out to problems. I am saying that are concerns and questions. And we will not know the answers for at least 3 or 4 years.
