At what age should boys start lifting weights?

I have my undergraduate in exercise science.. for all those saying weighlifting at an early age stunts growth, there is no research evidence that supports that claim. Reps should be higher in nature and correct form should ALWAYS be emphasized. If the exercises are carried out through the full range of motion in a controlled fashion, the little guy should be alright.

Having said that, I am a supporter of primarily bodyweight exercises until adequate strength is developed. If he is not able to do a push up, do not throw him on the bench, etc. This may be common sense but you never know.

I've had a couple of students who lacked the upper body strength to do push ups, and when taught proper form just fell on their face. I've used really light weights before for bench as a starting point to try to get them up to even doing push ups. This is a rare exception though.

I was always told to start after you hit puberty.

I always heard this too. Something about the bones in a young kid. If you start earlier, it "stalls" bone development.

If you read what we've been talking about that isn't true, just a wive's tale.

The legitimate discussion turned to what is the best path for training at these ages.

  • I was 12 when my dad started me on nautilus machines. No strain on the muscles and joints in a growing body. Did wonders. Before that I was doing push ups and roll ups only.
