Happy 100th birthday Woody.
Thanks for the memories Woody, I was at OSU when Woody was coaching, and I still love him and his wonderful wife Anne.
My favorite Woody snippet:
"One time he was in the shopping center in Upper Arlington, and this man came up to him and told him how much he and his wife loved the Buckeyes and how he just wanted to shake his hand. 'Well, where is your wife?' Woody asked him. The man told him she was dying of cancer at Riverside Hospital. That evening, that man went to see his wife, and Woody was already sitting by her bedside. There are hundreds of stories like that. Woody used to just walk the halls at all of the hospitals and drop in to cheer people up -- people he didn't know."
Rex Kern, from the book "What It Means to Be a Buckeye"
I'm sure most on this board have one too.
Was there the day he dotted the I. Unbelievable moment in the Shoe. Watched his show every Saturday night. Will always be a super fan of this great man!
Woody was greeted at the airport one year after beating Michigan at Michigan, upon walking into the terminal he was handed a bouquet of roses, he went to Riverside Hospital on his way home and passed out the roses to patients at Riverside.
I went on a tour of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and the Stadium locker room yesterday and this was one of the stories that was told about Woody Hayes. Woody always believed in paying it forward and made his players join him on tours of Hospitals.
And after seeing a little of the WHAC, I can understand how recruits are impressed with their visits.
In the book," I Remember Woody", one of his ex players tells of being on the team when Woody was fired, and he was part of a crew they asked to help clean out Woodys office...and as he was cleaning out a desk draw of Woody's. underneath a cardboard bottom,.they found 10-15 checks, for one hundred-two hundred dollars from the early 60's that Woody had received for speaking engagements, that he had never cashed!. That was Woody!
