Big Ten Recruiting: A Detailed Look

We examine how all 12 Big Ten teams (14 including Rutgers and Maryland) are faring on the recruiting front in 2013. Who is living up to their end of the bargain? Who is not?

    Dave Biddle

  • Astute:
Especially calling out Nebraska. "They’re not putting together a terrible class by any means, but mediocrity is not what is expected of Nebraska."

And your remarks on Northwestern. Nice call on that one Dave: " Pat Fitzgerald’s chances of finishing fairly strong and improving his team’s recruiting ranking are good after the Wildcats completed a 10-3 season. "
    -
Edit to add: I like watching what the Wildcats are doing. I'm actually becoming a fan of their personality. If only a few other teams had Fitzgerald's fire.

  • Bucknuts, this is the second article today that you have called Eli Woodard Eli Appel. I have to correct you on this one. Buckrock I might as well pick on you too. The SEC is very aggressive compared to the SEC? Also to name three of the best recruiters, Urban, Chip,Lane, and Sabin? I never was the best at math, but.....

    Eli Woodard is Eli Apple.

Sometimes when a message is typed, then you reword it, things get left in. I understood what he meant "SEC is very aggressive compared to the (B10).
As for his naming 4 men when he stated a list would contain 3... maybe it was the 2nd 6pack talking :-) It was New Years Day

  • Definitely shows jp on the field that's for sure. Id say braska wisky Nd iowa need to step the hell up and honestly I'm surprised that illinois isn't doing better. Their is a lot of talent in Illinois but they're not getting it. Why aren't they working Missouri better?

  • If you have a lot of linemen with no one to throw to like in the Michigan class it will not matter much how good the QB is. I always believe that a good line coach (I think Bucks currently have a great line coach) can teach a lineman that wants to learn and work at it to be better than average. That does not mean that a coach should not try to get the best lineman he can, just that you can take someone that has talent and fit the bill and teach them. A team that is lacking talent and speed at skill positions with will not last in the long haul no matter how many good lineman you have.

  • thanks dave!

Other than tOSU and scUM, the classes are very lack-luster. I give a lot of credit to PSU with their NCAA sanctions in full force. Nebraska and Wisky in the top 25 isn't bad, but they should be in the top 15-20 every year.

Iowa and MSU have terrible classes. MSU should be doing a lot better than they are, Iowa is just bad and getting worse.

It's bad when you add two non-traditional football schools (Maryland, Rutgers) and they rank higher than over half the conference. That's the state of football right now in the Big Ten.

  • I'm surprised PeeSU is doing that well; and the Little Green Men aren't doing better.

    Good article.

  • GO2hellBLUE "Downvotes? This is what happens when you give everybody participation ribbons. I wasn't being being an A-whole, there were just a few things that were bothering me. God forbid any one correct anything that is wrong. I also knew what he meant but if people would take the time to re-read their posts maybe I wouldn't have to. Just saying. I don't want to hijack this thread but I wish people would double check their posts. It's just common sense. I think the world needs a lot more of it."

The downvotes are stupid but you most likely got them for calling out Dave for calling Eli Apple by his correct name.......He changed it a few weeks ago because his step father last name is Apple and has been basically his father figure his whole life. They did a story on bucknuts on it also

  • This has probably been done before. I would be interested to see a comparison of recruiting class rankings to final rankings 3 years from signing. Basically the signing classes "junior year",

If there is a correlation, the B1G will only have 2 teams in the top 15 in "3 years". So for Nebraska, MSU, Wisconsin, they can expect to be underdogs in the bowl games again.

  • "...Amazingly, there is talk that Ferentz is a leading candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs head coaching job. Hey, at least he won’t have to worry about recruiting (or in his case, not recruiting) if he moves on to the NFL."

Iowa should be so lucky. The ONLY reason Ferentz is still employed is that his enormous buyout is too rich for Iowa taxpayers to forfeit. If he leaves voluntarily, the good people of the Hawkeye State will be square-dancing in the streets. Hayden Fry proved you could recruit talent from places like Chicago/Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska (yes, even Neb), Missouri, and the West and put together some very good teams. Iowa City and the University are actually great places with progressive people and a great Town/Gown feel. Ferentz has screwed the pooch there and left a good program in ashes...

Another lost Jan. 1 for the conference.

  • I actually thought the Big Ten fared well in the bowls, relatively-speaking. They were underdogs in six of the seven games (initially were underdogs in all seven but Northwestern became a slight favorite the day before the game) and were heavy underdogs in many of them, but ended up 2-5. That in itself is no embarrassment. Then you factor in that every team in the conference was playing "two spots up" due to the absence of Ohio State and Penn State ... and I think the Big Ten did as well as I could have expected in the bowls.

This story is much more big-picture. I actually started writing it before yesterday's bowl games.

  • Alright, I did not know that Eli Woodard changed his name. Part of the reason I complain is because I like to have a clue on what's going on. When he mentioned Eli Apple I had no clue who he was talking about. I checked the commits list and all I found was Eli Woodard. So I put 2 and 2 together and figured they were talking about Woodard. So my bad. But maybe change his profile or put Woodard in parentheses. I don't really care about down votes but it does make you feel like you've done something wrong. I can hardly read message boards any more and now I'm having a hard time following actual articles. So bucknuts I'm sorry I didn't know Eli changed his name. Every body else I still ask that you read your post before you post them. Other wise we may end up sounding like we are from Michigan. : )

  • Dave, I agreed with you on the article but your post on the bowl games, not so much. There is no asterisk by the outcome of the bowl that says, " we weren't good enough to play in this bowl but because of the NCAA we had to play up, sorry". You can't tell me that Minnesota and Michigan didn't choke at the end of the game, also Neb. just gave up. My biggest problem is that these teams don't play with any heart, and I don't foresee that changing any time in the near future, esp with recruiting like this. Yes, I'll agree they were playing without the same talent level but they were playing fine the whole game but we all knew, and I think they did too, that they would all choke in the end. It's a mind set and only NW showed that they are gonna overcome it, maybe its because they're smart kids. So , that being said, how do these teams change the pattern in their recruiting? They have a lot going against them, cold weather, losing records, bad rep of a losing conference, and the parade of changing coaches.

  • Nebraska needs to find a recruiting identity. Find your key locations and focus heavy with better recruiting. Hitting states like Ohio is a waste of time imo. OSU will always get the top talent and you cannot be elite with leftovers. Those players go to MSU and IL.

UN (not NU) needs to focus more on Texas, Mizz, KS, CO, AZ, etc. Get 4 stars from those states where there is less competition for players or simply more talent (ie Texas). UN should be able to pull players from AZ, Mizz and CO without much resistance. They should also be able to pull a few gems from Texas and Florida.

The UN staff is simply not getting it done on the recruiting front. By the way, Pelini needs to fire his defensive coordinator. Too lazy to look it up but how many points did they give up on average against top level competition? I know between OSU, Wisky and UGA they gave up almost an average of 60. Ouch! You can't win big games playing piss poor defense. Black Shirts? Yellow Shirts maybe.
