Boarding House: Tuesday Edition

Fickell administration? Heacock's call? Sizing up Boren? All that and more in the Tuesday Boarding House.

  • However, Fickell was adamant that Jim Bollman will be offensive coordinator in more than title-only this fall. Bollman will actually call the plays.

Does this scare anyone else? Are you still confident in our ability to win 9 games or more with Bollman calling the plays?

  • do we ever do an exit interview with recruits we offer and chose to go elsewhere? How about talking with the kids coach? I just don't understand Ohio kids passing on the Buckeyes if they are from Ohio. The idea of wisky and scum stealing a recuit just makes me sick. i would stay on these kids right up until feb. they are fair game until they sign.

  • What is Jacoby's current size? I would think he is further advanced as far as weight training than many high school recruits simply because of his dad and 2 older brothers giving him advice as to how to train. I'm concerned that maybe he can't grow into the size we need him to be, and if that's the case then losing Dodson just became an even bigger problem.

I'm assuming Fickell understands he has to win 9+ games to keep the job. So, he must feel Bollman gives him the ability to do that, or that its too late to bring in someone else. All we can do is sit back, cheer loudly, and hope it works out.

As an interim coach he may not be able to make calls on who leaves. That may be part of the deal. He may be able to back fill but not make wholesale changes. I would be shocked if he could while wearing the interim gig.

Now, what he may do during the season is take over more of the play calling if things aren't going well.

    Exactly.

  • You know Bollman might be a good play caller just a horrible O-line coach. Our line has been a weak link since he has been here. I can't believe he actually lasted any amount of time in the NFL as a O-line coach.

  • I just want to reach out and strangle somebody.

    Guess who??

Now we have a OL recruit really not much bigger than a FB?
Dodson gets an offer way too late, and says drop dead? Vanderbilt.....yes...beat us to the punch on that guy.
    # 4 and #5 ranked players in-state get no offer
Offer yet to be made to Davidson.
Most of our chips are bet on out-of-state long-shots.....Dimond, Pirsig, kid from FL, etc,. etc., etc, et-f&%$king cetera.

The...or at lest one popular definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Let's play that broken record again, shall we??

    Bollman must be certifiable.

This just tells me at the worst play calling will be like previous years. Oh well!

  • Yes, you are right, averaging 10 wins per season over ten years is horrible.

I am actually looking forward to the offensive play calling, at least for the first game, then I will either worry or be happy for the rest of the season. I have, as many others have been, frequently frustrated at the conservative play calling, but you couldn't argue with the win production.

The only question regarding the past play calling would be, how many losses would have been wins if the offensive play calling had been different? Would there have been any difference?

We will find out if it is different or not in three months. Something to look forward to, or to dread, depending on ones outlook.

One does need to factor in though that the offense is going to be as green as it ever has been in the last ten years this season.

  • This "campaign" to get Fickell to be the long-term head coaching position is amazing to me. If OSU has a chance, and they most definitely do, to land Urban Meyer and they instead fall for this "long-term campaign" for Fickell, it wil be the kind of decision that will demonstrate the lack of real leadership in the OSU administration and an absolute horrible missed opportunity. Meyer brings "national championship" background, experience, "the nations best recruiter" with avenues direct to top 4 and 5 star recruits (Ohio, Florida and Georgia), media powerhouse and "fear" from Saban, Miles, et al. Fickell brings no head coaching experience, no leadership role in recruiting or gravitas in the eyes of recruits, no national media clout and am sure little, little if any fear from Saban, Miles, et al. Why is there validation for landing a couple 3 star recruits. OSU can land 3 star recruits with no head coach position filled. Look at the top 20 on the 247 recruiting list, almost none listed as interested in OSU. Alabama, Auburn is on almost everyone's. This is the list Meyer will bring OSU to and "every year". Fickell has no chance for this. Example, Meyer and Fickell "walk into the room". All eyes will go to Meyer, none will go to Fickell. OSU administration MUST look at the big picture. We should have "the best" (Meyer) and nothing else. It is all right in front of the OSU administration and Buckeye Nation. This needs to get done.

  • The cloud over the program is hurting the recruiting. The sooner the NCAA has their ruling, the better. The best case scenario is for kids to take their time and go thru the whole process. Thayt would help our case with some of these kids.

Everything I've read points to the NCAA ruling to come in Oct.---IMO, taking away post-season play would do the most harm for recruiting if it is for more than one year.

  • I already see signs of Smith hand-cuffing Luke's decision making (see Bollman as play caller). Why not give Luke the chance to make a name for himself?

We can't pay kids as well as Alabama or Auburn because we self report all of our violations.

Excellent point, JD. It begs the question of -- is Bollman calling plays because Fickell thinks he's the best man for the job, or is the AD not allowing an "interim" coach to make other coaching changes? If it really is Fickell's decision then he has to live with the consequences and that means his future as the HC at tOSU. I think a 9-3 season or worse and Fickell is out the door, just like Earle Bruce. But a10-2 season or better would put extreme pressure on the Admin to keep him around permanently.

  • What "top" offensive coordinator would take this job right now with an "interim" coach at the helm? Until a head coach is named sometime early next year, we will have to live with Bollman as the OC. Defense is and will be our calling card next season.

  • "However, Fickell was adamant that Jim Bollman will be offensive coordinator in more than title-only this fall. Bollman will actually call the plays. " I just threw up a lot in my throat!! Let's me see if I got this right:
    We lost:
    Rolle
    Holman
    Hines
    Heyward
    Latimore
    Torrence
all on the defensive side of the ball and we're gonna have Bollman run the offense, I need to visit the booze store! But wait, we'll have a freshman QB, freshman RB, and quite posibily a soph LT. Now I feel better. I'm pulling for the young kids and hopefully they'll be given the chance to play and not "play to not lose."

I like your thinking, but do want to point out that with the play calling many on here have been advocating the bigger question is how may wins would have been losses. The offensive schemes and play calling were a big part of the exceptional success of the Tressel years; the top record in college football during that ten years.
