Boren is a Good Linebacker !

  • This won’t be a very popular post but I thought Boren played linebacker with great instinct... and he has real nack for finding the ball. I say we keep using him!!

I'm also not in favor of taking a clear strength at FB and moving to defense, but you're right about Boren. At times, he was downright bad, but I am amazed he was not completely lost all game. He has not played LB since high school.

It still is not a good situation, but what could you expect from a guy that only had a couple of practices.

Cleveland Orchestra Baby!! World's greatest!! The Brown's wet dream is to be them.

  • But he's a great fullback..

Don't get me wrong. He played admirably, and obviously just wants to do whatever it takes to help his team. I just wish we weren't in a position injury wise to need him at LB.

  • Boren was ok. Being able to come in like that and produce is admirable and proves Boren is a hell of a football player and an asset on a pro roster.

But Boren is not and should not be a full time LB. boren got in the game because he s a physical player with good size. Klein is in the game for the same reason. Our other LB's are not very physical. They are consumed by lockers and are taken outof the game.

Thats why it looks like Boren is doing good. Because he is more physical. Our other LB's, including Shazier, are getting eaten up and not shedding blocks.

  • Not, outside of some early downs against teams like Wisconsin that run power iso, Boren brings nothing.
Boren and Storm Klein on the field in passing situations is a white elephant, an old woman could get open on drag routes across the middle they both lack so much horizontal quickness.

Agreed that he did bring some physicality..I saw two tackles where he forced a fumble, but the player was on the sideline so the ball went out of bounds both times.

I agree totally... how about Shazier as safety? just as a thought..

  • Shows how pathetic Storm Klein is. I don't know that he's had an 8-tackle game in his career. Boren didn't even start and in his first game gets 8 stops.
Klein must have the pictures of Fickell. It's incredible they keep running that guy out there. That drag route with Wynn is precisely why Kein cannot play another snap at this level.
As Earle Bruce said, how is it possible for Grant to be worse than Storm Klein? What benefit does it bring to this defense to keep Klein out there and rob any of the freshman of earning snaps?
I don't get it, much like Fickell apparently.

Take the "blind loyalty scarlet gray glasses" off.

No doubt Z Boren is a great kid, always gives 110 % + effort, all of these things.

Fact is, he just does not have the speed and athletism to play LB. His play at that position was average, at best SAT night.

We need much more than that.

We need to go with athletic guys.....Marcus, Perkins and yes, Grant. They all need to play, mistakes or no mistakes. They need to be on the field and let them learn.

Looking out, 2013 and 2014, Meyer will load up at this position with very athletic, sideline to sideline guys (who can also cover)...Mitchell, R McMillian, Booker, Garrett, etc.

The glaring part of Boren and Klein's LB games, is that neither can cover, period.

Biggest problem I see with that is that you weaken an already depleted LB group.

  • I like the Boren move. He did alright first time out, and he's a real smart kid; with the instincts I'm sure he has, I'm betting he blows up.

Will stick his face in yours.

  • We need him at FB. He looked slow and soft at LB.

  • Has anyone bothered to notice the changes to our offense in the past couple weeks and Borens' playing time diminishing because of it???

I think Boren is a Meyer favorite..a real team player and football player..willing to sacrifice for the team..I see this as a reward from Meyer..he isnt any worse in his first action on defense than anyone else has been who's been practicing there for the past few years..

I also applaud Fickell's effort to bring him up to speed and spending many hours doing so..Meyer is simply rewarding a team leader..

And lastly, we should have won by 18 or more..this was a classic letdown after 2 HUGE conference games..quit reading sooooo much into a subpar defensive performance..and Boren didnt hurt us at all

  • This is a correct assesment. We struggle against Spread teams that have a decent QB and receivers. We do not have the coverage skills at LB, Nickel and Safety to do an adequate job to defend a spread offense. We do a good job in a true 4-3 alignment against teams like MSU. I see us handling PSU and Wisky. Purdue scares me along with Michigan with our current personnel more than the others on our remaining schedule.

A good High school team could beat the IIllini.

Our bioggest loss on Defense last year was Tyler Moeller. Guy could cover and tackle in open space. Honestly, I think Boren at least can get his assignments down and do a good job. I like the move. Play good players and they rise to the occasion.

    Go Buck !

    buckeyeinsaline

  • A shade slow and it will take too long for him to really be ready for big time play. He is not the type of player to stop the spread but could help against power. What does it say about those young kids? They have to be frustrated beyond frustration. Boren should have left for the pros last year. He can be an excellent FB in the NFL.

    wizard45

  • Boren is very physical and will help against the run, but will struggle in pass coverage. He's been very good as a blocking FB, when used. Can't believe our depth at LB is this bad.
