Buckeye Nation Takes Care of Their Own - Troops in Afghanistan

  • It's been a tough 9mo in Buckeye Nation. We've lost a potential all-american QB and a certain all-time great coach to their bad decisions and OSU's inability to stand up to the resulting torrent of bad press. We've also lost a handful of other important players for 5 games due to the same bad decisions. And God knows we've taken an unprecedented amount of crap from all sides. Some of it deserved, but mostly misinformed piling on from media hacks with their own agendas (ratings) and other teams fans kicking the better man while he's down (just like they were an LSU QB).

As bad as we've had it here in the states, you can bet our Buckeye Brethren deployed abroad are taking the same raft of crap from their buddies who follow other teams. To make matters worse, many of them have limited or no access to other things to distract them (like recruiting and camp news).

Well, I hope the fans of the other 119 D1-FBS schools got in their shots while they had the chance. Because now it's Luke & Company's turn to make the news. And it's our turn to stand up and let the world know the worst they can throw at us doesn't come close to touching the value of being part of Buckeye Nation.

I had the chance to talk to our man Maxdamdil last weekend. He's been home on some well-deserved R&R, but heads back to Afghanistan soon. He thanked me (on all our behalves) again for last year's care packages. And he told me how much fun he and our fellow Buckeyes had reminding the non-Buckeyes that Scarlet and Gray Nation had their back on the care package front while everybody else seems to be on their own. He said the Spec-Ops guys were thankful, but also hoping we can come through again. (No doubt from having taken their own raft of crap these last 6-9mo and the lack of any distractions for their down time at remote bases.)

I promised Maxdamdil to do everything I can to make our entertainment and care packages happen again. So now I'm asking you to stand by my side and help cash the check that I've written.

As of this moment, I only know of the Spec-Ops Buckeyes at 4 remote camps in Afghanistan that need our support. The Buckeyes at the 451st CASF (air evac) unit have all rotated home, as I believe has our guy in Iraq. Undoubtedly this list will grow, but that is all that is known for now.

FYI - the Spec-Ops teams are at remote bases without Internet, TV or Radio access. They do have generators to supply power and DVD players to play whatever they can get in the way of entertainment. We have our own Spec-Ops "black chopper" air force to make the final delivery once we get packages to Kabul.

Once again I'm volunteering to act as a coordinator and shipping agent. And once again, I am hoping we can send a steady stream of snacks, Buckeye game DVDs, books, movie DVDs and any other entertainment we can muster.

My wife is again providing a small stream of pre-release books that her library gets from publishers.

I know at least a couple folks volunteered in our old thread to record Buckeye games and burn them to DVD. I'd appreciate hearing from you again so I can confirm coverage.

The other things we need are:

    - money...I'll seed us with a couple hundred bucks, but every little bit counts. Give whatever you can, I'll provide accounting details here like last year and I assure you that every penny will go toward care package contents or shipping costs.

    - Movie DVDs (no Blu-ray please)...No questions asked. Ones you own and no longer need, record them from your TV or visit one of those download sites. Don't worry about anyone who gripes about copyright, because the buck stops with me (and nobody would want the publicity of raising a stink over stuff shipped to our troops in need).

    - Books or audiobooks...Again, no questions asked.

    - Notes, Cards or Letters from home...Anything that lets them know we're thinking about them goes a long way toward improved morale. So if you teach or are active in a church, consider asking kids/people to help by writing a brief note. They will be welcomed like water in a desert.

THIS IS OUR CALL TO ACTION BUCKEYE NATION!! There are a lot of guys in harm's way. It doesn't seem too much to ask that they be able to follow their Buckeyes, have a few snacks and enjoy some other kind of entertainment diversions during their downtime. And at the same time we're proving by deed that there's a difference between Buckeye Nation and any other fans...we don't forget and we take care of our own!

We just need everybody to step up a little. Don't blow it off, assuming others will fill the need. As I said, every little bit counts.

    Housekeeping:
For at least the moment, I'm going to have to run all funds through a separate checking account I set up in my name. I do not run any personal transactions through this account and keep it just for this project. Unfortunately, the Reverend who offered me his 501(c)(3) charity as a clearinghouse is abroad doing missionary work. If he returns and I can start running things through that account I will let everyone know.

In the meantime, you'll have to trust me. However, at least you'll know right where to find me. So make any donations payable to:

    Ed Carter
    2627 Eckert Road
    Lexington, OH 44904

and please note something like "Buckeyes Care for their Own" on the check (or note if sending cash). I'm looking forward to hearing from you guys. I know you won't let our Buckeye troops down.

    PS
If any of you frequent the national (blue?) board. Feel free to challenge those other schools fans to match our commitment. We already know they can't hang with Buckeye Nation on caring or giving.

  • Jar,
Thank-You for taking on this project again! I know it must be a lot of work for you and your family, but it is a great cause. I have put a check in the mail.

  • Jarhead, count on me for at least $1000 over the Fall Quarter. If I get the break I am expecting, I might be able to fund all you need and would be proud to do so.

We need to contact Tressel's old "head" of armed forces support (a retired vet). I would presume that we can still get unused programs from the School.

  • An "Air Cav" unit in Iraq has now also been indentified. One of our Bucknuts members commands the 80 paratrooper unit. I don't want to release his handle without permission.

On a side note, he tells me mail service to Iraq will go on "degraded service" mode in October. I've asked for clarification as to what that means (if he knows).

That's very generous of you. It is much appreciated and will be put to good use. The same goes for all support above and later.

I have an email out to Bob Tucker (Tressel's Dir. of Military Assistance). I hope he is still involved, but won't know until I hear back. Either way, I'll find the guy even if it means a trip to the WHAC.

  • Forgot to mention that I'm compiling a pre-season DVD for the guys with no Internet access. I'm going to use any/all practice video I can find, maybe the BTN Buckeye Preview and any recruiting info I can figure out how to include. I'll toss several copies in with a shipment of books I've got ready to go now. Hopefully that will be a little appetizer and tide them over for a couple weeks.

    JarheadBuck

  • Jar, I'll be honored to contribute. It will be somewhat modest as this layoff doesn't look to ever end but I will give what I can. Those guys and gals certainly deserve it.

Yeah, I am in. I will send a check, and whatever else you might need. It might be nice if we could get kind of a round number of those who will pledge some money so we might know what amount/ type of donation is appropriate.

Love to see if other schools can match what we can do here at Bucknuts.

Degraded service means if they can get it to you they will. But its not a priority. It took me about a month to get stuff sent to me sometimes longer. Might want to find out how much longer they have on there deployments. The best gift I got was the osu michigan game 1 vs 2 on dvd still have it might be a little worn out but could send it if you would like. I have alot of this years college football preview mags I can send to. That air cav unit your talking about are they 82nd guys if so I got something special for them.

  • Not sure the unit. I replied to his PM asking what unit. Hopefully I'll hear back in a day or two.

I was thinking 101st for some reason. Somehow I had in my mind that 101st is now the only "air cav" and other airborne (82nd, 173rd, etc.) used a different moniker. I thought I heard that 101st no longer jump and are strictly helo-assault, while the opposite is true for 82nd and 173rd. Then again, I could be all wet.

I'll let you know once I hear back.

    JarheadBuck

  • 101st is the only air assult unit but every division has an air cav unit 82nds is 1/73 or something like that cant remember. You said he was airborne thats why I thought them. Did a few years with the 82nd and a few yrs with 4/25 airborne brigade in alaska. So I know how paratroopers think. And have a few ideas on what to send them. Its been 4 yrs since I was there so im sure things have chenged.

You were dead right and I was wrong (hopefully not as usual on my part).

Our man commands a troop of 1/73 of 82nd. (BTW, I thought 82nd was called "Jumpin Junkies" until he referred to them as "All American." I can understand why they made the change, but when did they do it...I must have been asleep?)

He tells me the latest word is their mail will go "degraded" 10/5 and "close" 10/20. I'm hoping that means they rotate back about then, but don't know. I guess the point is that if we're sending them anything, we need to get it there by early October to be sure it arrives at all.

He also tells me that as of now they have Internet and TV. However the Internet will go away too (presumable on a similar schedule as mail). So the entertainment need won't be quite as much as for the guys at the small remote FOB in Afghanistan.

If you want to send him/them something direct, I'll PM you his APO address.

    JarheadBuck

  • Thay have the all americans since ww1 they got the name because they had soldiers from every state and territory the us owned. There werent 50 states then. They have a ton of nicknames. Jumpin junkies, alcholics annomus, 82nd airplane gang. Thanks for his address. I will still probly send you some stuff to send to the others

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the support. I already let Jarhead know, but the situation in Iraq is finally coming to a close. We think there will still be a small number of Soldiers that stay past 31 December. I don't want to get into a lot of details in an open forum, but you can figure out on your own that the 40,000 troops on ground now just won't disappear over night.

There will be a phased withdrawl of forces that will mean closure of certain facilities prior to 31 December. I wanted to let Jar know that for his planning purposes for sending packages to Iraq.

I have been a Bucknuts subsriber for over six years (with a few different handles), and I can say I've always admired and respected the support from Jarhead and everybody else who also contributed. I remember a few years back when they gave out free subscriptions to Bucknuts if you had a .mil email account. That was awesome.

As you know Ohio is represented quite well in the military and if you include me there are five guys in my Recon Troop alone. There are others that support my unit from Ohio as well and I know getting some Buckeye gear/stuff would be appreciated by all of them.

    Respectfully,
    CPT Andrew Brown

  • (Buckeye) Nick Swisher and wife planning a honeymoon to … Afghanistan?

We all know the old honeymoon standbys: There's the islands of Hawaii. The destinations in the Caribbean. Italy, France and Spain, too.

But Afghanistan? I'm guessing the only honeymooning any Americans do there comes as a result of a deployment following the marriage of two members of the U.S. military. It's not on anyone's short list — or long list, for that matter.

Well, except for New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher(notes) and his actress wife, JoAnna Garcia. After being married last December, the couple now say they plan to visit the troops in Afghanistan this winter as they finally take a honeymoon that was postponed because of their busy schedules.

    -------------
► From the New York Post:

Speaking to us at the Yankees Unite for Tornado Relief event at Southern Hospitality Hell's Kitchen, Swisher said, "Three military officers came to the Yankee locker room and asked if any of us would like to visit the troops. My hand went straight up, I said, 'I'm in.' I knew JoAnna would want to go. It will be our first trip since we got married.

"I come from a military family ... and no matter what your views are, these men and women are out there risking everything for us. I realize how fortunate I have been, so I like to give back at every opportunity I can." [...]

Excited Garcia also told us, "We are both really looking forward to visiting the troops. Yes, it isn't a traditional honeymoon, but it is something we both feel strongly about."
    -------------
Garcia admitted that the couple will probably stop in Europe on their way back, but here's a message for the inevitable cynics out there: Who cares? There aren't many people who'd spend any part of their special time in Afghanistan so the Swisher-Garcias taking a good chunk of their precious downtime to support and visit with our military members ranks as a big win in my book.

I'm not a baseball guy, or a Yankee guy, but you've got to wonder if old Nick got beaned one too many times?

It's great that he and his wife want to visit the troops. I'm sure they'll rope him into some pickup games, etc. ...but on your honeymoon??????

I guess maybe they're planning to go "old school" (back to when honeymoon meant location was irrelevant because they're not leaving bed for a week).

Stand up guy, gorgeous wife. I hope it's a great trip for them and the troops.

  • Dear All,
Am back in Afghanistan after getting a chance to hug the little ones again after so long apart. There aren't enough platitudes or "thank-you's" for all that Ed and all of you have done for all of us over here. A question was brought up as to how long someone was deployed. For many in the military, 6 months is about the norm unless you reup for another tour. I have been in Afghanistan for 2 years and have two more to go. I am not in the military but one of our more interesting missions is to hunt Suicide Bombers. Not as bad as it sounds and quite fun if successful; and we are successful! The guys in the more remote areas stay longer than usual and they don't have the "goodies" like those at Camp Phoenix or Leatherneck. Your all's efforts can not be measured in the joy you bring to everyone. It's even better when we can rub it in on a Penn State or tsun fan. We have taken a beating about all the ruckus but we are biding our time when our Bucks bring it! THANK YOU to ALL for all you do!!!! GOD BLESS and GO BUCKS!!!

Killing the Taliban ... one INFIDEL bullet at a time ... GOD Bless our Troops and the USA!!

Thanks again. Stay safe and good hunting!!

  • CALLING ALL MEDIA - DVD TECHIES!!!!!!!!!

There have to be a bunch of guys out there in Buckeye Nation who record/burn movies, tv, whatever entertainment to DVDs. We need to tap into that resource.

Last year I sent many of my own movie DVDs (and many others that were downloaded and then burned) to the guys at remote camps. They loved them and truly appreciated the effort since they have very limited entertainment options at the remote camps (no TV, Radio or Internet).

Unfortunately, due to my new business, I don't have time to do this again this year. I have reached out to someone who volunteered video help early this year. However, at least based on my (admittedly unskilled brute force approach) experience last year, it takes A LOT of time. So I was thinking this might be something where multiple people could share the workload.

So if you have content downloading and DVD recording equipment/skills...or know someone who does...please consider pitching in on this effort. If cost is an issue, don't let that stop you. I'm sure we can supply money for blank DVDs and/or postage if needed. Time is the constraining resource here.

Please speak up and let me know if you can help.

    Thanks
