Buckeye OL Target Making Changes

Ohio State offensive line target Khaliel Rodgers has made some changes and narrowed his list down. What does it all mean to the Buckeyes?

  • I think we're the cream of his final 6, but I always think that. Let's get him.

  • BK, how about a summary of current status of tackles OSU has targeted? Many view Lisle as an interior player.... TIA.

  • Uuuuuughhh. I don't wanna be a downer but a second trip to Auburn and an accelerated announcement date seems awfully foretelling. But, I am not an expert either. I do believe we'll be ok in the long haul. Just he & Pocic would have been really good commits to have.

    This sucks.

  • Outside of OSU, Auburn is probably the biggest elite challenge, the others on that list, come on.
Ohio State put this kid on the map as his first time time OL offer, get here and show some loyalty and commit. Rodgers admitted OSU was his first elite offer, so get your tail here and commit.

  • Bill, why are we having such a tough time getting OTs? It would seem like a golden opportunity here right now. ScUM getting so many good ones does not help my frustration.

Agree. Can't OT prospects see they could get immediate PT? I wonder if the spread (Non Pro-style ) scheme is influencing them?????

  • Pocic mentioned the scheme of the offense with LSU. With depth lacking @OT, it is perplexing that we are striking out often on OT. Having said that, the staff just was assembled in December & January. Michigan had a full year more than us to recruit for 2013. OL Recruits for 2014 will be a telling year.

  • It is amazing how tOSU followers get sucked into the whims of 18 year old kids. Everyone felt Pocic and others who went in different directions were a done deal except the recruit themselves. Most of us have never seen any of these recruits play and yet they are "must gets" based on what; comment board chit chat and so called insider info. If UFM is as good as advertised, he'll get the kids he wants not what a post wants. At the end of the day, I'm confident we'll be proud of the kids we get and will live without the "must gets." JMO

  • Greg Biggins of scout.com said yesterday that he hears Ole Piss is actually in the driver's seat and he almost committed there very recently.

  • What a weird final 6 for a supposed elite OL.

I would felel better about our chances if he actually makes a visit.

He says he will but there are not definitive plans to do so.

I think as it stands right now my hope is for an OL to emerge at camp and for UM3 to flip a committed prospect.

  • Bill/Duane, do you guys have any idea why OSU cannot seem to land the OL they want? I know they got Dodson and Decker, but for an elite program with numerous holes to fill on the OL seems to be a struggle.

Ole Miss? Outside of great looking women, enjoy two new coaches in 4 years and 7-5 every year at best.
Who the heck is Ole Miss's coach? They canned another one in Nutt.

The JUCO/PREP route is there, I did a google of another major site's 2012 JUCO/PREP kids for OL commits, and FSU, Bama, USC, Texas, Oregon and Oklahoma, amongst other all took JUCO/PREP OL, several took two in fact.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Who was the last difference maker from the JC ranks that the Bucks have brought in?

    I would submit the following:

1)Early PT might not be as readily available as we think. The bulk of our OL has mulitple years of eligibility.

2)The circus that is Gene Smith and his there "may or may not be major violations", that creep from Kentucky are pure negative recruiting gold, the "spread" offense.

    3)The curse of azvalley.

Thomas looked pretty good from Fork Union this spring.
We had a LB on the 2006 BCS title game team, Larry something, playing in the NFL now.
Tressel trended away from those kind in large degree, maybe we take a few a year now with Urban and staff. Saban finds 2/3 gold nuggets out year out of this JUCO/Prep route.

Last weeks running lines with Gene Smith's constant stupid remarks does not help, negative recruiting is part of recruiting. Every time that idiot comes out with something, it is running across ESPN and other outlets, someone get the Smith fund going to buy that buffoon out.

The SEC has used Juco as a minor league type thing for years. It has came along with the oversigning they have done. They are able to recruit multiple kids they know won't qualify. They stick them in the Juco schools and tell them how they just need to get their grades up. They then aren't committed to give the scholarship to the kid at a later date and the kid isn't committed to the school. However, the kid has a sense of loyalty to that school and likely goes to them if he has the opportunity.

OSU does this some with Fork Union although it isn't the same as a Juco school. I don't think kids in the midwest really view the Juco route as the same option as kids from the south do. I could be wrong though. I've been out of school for a while now.

  • Hate to say it, but UofM is kicking our butt in terms of 2013 Oline recruits and that is an area that requires beefing up. I seems that the 2 areas that need the most attention are not getting commitments...WR and OL. I know, everyone will say Marshall, but he has QB on the brain right now. He needs plenty of reps before we can count on him!

I hear you. As far as why, that is the million dollar question. It is certainly not for lack of trying. I am not sure I could pin things down to one reason the Buckeyes don't have a super OT commitment for 2013. They certainly finished 2012 strong with Dodson and Decker. It may be just the way things go this year and perhaps in 2014 the Buckeyes land a couple great offensive tackles. But keep in mind, there is still a long ways to go before National Signing Day and Meyer and his staff may yet pull out a great offensive tackle or two for 2013.

No way of knowing of course, but I believe the reason 2013 OTs are hesitant is that Decker and Dodson are just Freshmen and they will probably get most of the PT for the next few years barring injury. If that is the case, OSU should have more success with 2014 OTs.

These young men want PT. If you are only a year younger than a very good OT like Decker and/or Dodson you may not get much PT, barring injury, until they leave for the NFL.
