Buckeyes Blast Chicago State 87-44

Deshaun Thomas had 17 points and LaQuinton Ross had 15 as five Buckeyes reached double figures as No. 10 Ohio State routed Chicago State 87-44 Saturday.

  • I like seeing all of the guys play. What I would LOVE to see out of any of them..ANY...is some FIRE. Like after a shot made (maybe thats why I'm not seeing it) a guy pump his fist to get the crowd going. After great defense, pump the team up, go after a rebound like an animal. These guys need to be pissed off like UFM said the football team needed to be. Seems like they have a really bunch of nice guys on the team, on and off the court. It's ok to be a gentleman off the court but you need to spit blood when you see an oposing jersey...Especially from guys like Ross, Scott, Amir, etc..
    just my humble opinion

  • We have a lot of players with good skills but almost all with major weaknesses in their games. The good news is almost all of them are showing good improvement, e.g. Deshaun's really good passing game. I think we need to use Deshaun as a decoy and a high post passer some of the time. He can't carry us on his outside shooting alone. He is too good around the basket not to take advantage of that facet of his game.
We have to find someone who can make outside shots when they are collapsing on Deshaun. In addition to Lenzelle, that person might just be Amadeo. He has a really good stroke (when he gets settled down) and he handles himself pretty well in all facets of the game. LeQuinton continues to be a work in progress with a great stroke but he is not the ball handler he thinks he is. It will be an interesting season. Go Bucks!

Yeah, when Ross starts that I'm-gonna-attack-the-basket-dribble you can almost see the turnover coming. Needs to look for the open man instead of trying to dribble through a double team.

  • What a phenomenal waste of time. There is absolulely no value to games like this for either team. At least in football, the loser usually cashes in big for their athletic department. I couldn't care less how LeQ Ross looks against a team like this when I know what he looks like against Kansas. This is what totally befuddles me about BB scheduling - soft pre-conference football schedules are defended on the basis that the lack of a playoff system demands that any team that believes it can compete for the NC needs to go undefeated in the preseason. There is absolutely NO reason that OSU shouldn't be scheduling competitive teams in Nov/Dec. We play in a conference where a winning record will get you into the Tourney, and winning the conference will get you a 1-seed. The preconference record means nothing. Other than Duke and Kansas, both of which handled us easily, we haven't played anyone noteworthy. We would be far better off entering a tough Big Ten season a little battle tested even if it means carrying a few losses on the record. Games like todays have no meaning whatsoever.

  • dmagnus1 took 90 per cent of my post. All I have to add is that Amir Williams got passes in front of the rim for dunks four times in the second half and produced one free throw, one turnover and two missed shots. No wonder the Bucks were on strict orders not to pass to him against Kansas. This has to change.

I disagree with both of you, with this team (while the point is valid in most years).

This is a team with very little experience and with little confidence.
This is a team that really needs to see shots fall.

This is a team that needs to find a couple of shooters BEFORE they play another good team.

Smith and Craft must return to what made them very good role players...defense, rebounding, and a slashing midrange game for Smith, NOT a guy obsessed with his 3.

I think that Q and ADV are the only pure shooters on this team, outside of DT. I think that today will serve them well. Both need to catch and shoot with confidence. There is a reason that Matta played both a ton today. Ready or not, they'll both play more going forward.

Smith Jr. was one that I think Matta was referring to with regards to "not being ready to play" today. He needs to refocus. A 2nd half benching against his hometown 3rd stringers might help him get it.

I saw a slightly more mobile Craft today, and I think that his confidence is on the way up.

I saw Ravenel wake up today on the boards. He needed it. It may not translate to success against a Zeller, but his benching and today's success reinforced his role, and he looked like he understood it.

Without a patsy opponent today, this experimentation would not have taken place. It was necessary.

    Go Bucks!

  • The Buckeyes turned this game when they started to attack the Basket rather than settling for jump shots. And, the jump shots started falling after they attacked the middle. That included getting the ball into Williams, Thomas and Ravenal inside.

This is not a great outside shooting team. They need to attack the Basket and play great defense. They also need to play all of their top 10 guys significant minutes each game. We are going to need Scott, Ross, Della Valle and even McDonald if we want to make it deep into the NCAAs. Ross and Della Valle can score. And, that takes some pressure off Thomas. McDonald actually plays pretty good Defense and can rebound. Playing 10 guys means a fresher team in the last 10 minutes of the game, when most games are won or lost.

  • I don't want to be Debbie Downer but I was very disappointed in the team in this game. They continue to make the same mistakes in both their wins and losses. Only difference is some teams are so bad it doesn't matter like tonight.

The quick shots make me crazy. I don't care what the percentage is, just move the ball and take good shots. This team plays selfish imo and rarely makes the extra pass. Obviously there are exceptions.

This team MUST find an inside out game or a way to get penetration. Otherwise they will continue to jack up 3's and live and die by them. I thought Amir played decent, not great but decent. Throw the ball in the block, and Amir needs to bring it back out a lot more than he puts it up without ever putting the ball on the floor. This alone will create more open looks and help move the ball better.

I thought Craft did a decent job in getting to the rim a few times but this needs to happen more. I did not see anyone other than Craft and Thomas take it to the rim with authority all night. Maybe Smith once as well. Scott, Thompson and Ross need to create better.

Too much soft play, and what looks to be lazy, selfish attitude right now. Hope I am just looking too much into this.

    I

Do you think it was because his ankle was a little better? Craft's ankle was about 50% against Kansas.

I hear that his hip was better. His ankle will be an issue all year long. He tweaked it again yesterday, and that was one reason that he played little in the 2nd half. His lateral quickness will not be what it was last year.
