Can Tribe Stay With The Tigers?

  • The Indians, Tigers and White Sox are tied for first place. Do you think the Tribe can stay with the Tigers all season and challenge them for the Central Division title?

    Bill Kurelic

  • no maybe a wild card

  • Lineup to inconsitent......

  • I will give the Indians credit, they are playing well. However, they did the same thing last year in the first month of the season. They just don't have the depth and firepower to stay with the Tigers. I think the Tigers win that division by 20 games.

  • Wild card is a potential, especially if Damon can give them something around .280 hitting wise and he brings some speed.
Pitching and defense have to carry the Tribe in large part, and getting anything out of Sizemore would be nice, but I doubt it.

They have played well against Kansas City, Seattle, Oakland and they beat KC again last night. I love the Tribe, but I am not optimistic. They have 3 AAA players in their every day lineup in Duncan, Brantley and Kotchman (nice glove but your bat is horrid). The pitching has been well below average. The Tigers have much more star power and depth. They have arguably the best pitcher in baseball as well. Maybe the Tribe can stay in this thing for a few months like last year, but they just aren't good enough.

    I hope I eat crow.

So in essence you think the Tigers are the best team in the last 15 years of baseball, because I can't remember a team winning a division by 20 games in a long time.

Injuries killed the Indians last year, if they stay healthy I think they can push 85-90 wins which historically will keep them in the AL central race and wit hth enew wild card rules they'll be in that race as well.

Agree that the tigers will run away but do not agree with Brantley being a AAA player.

  • Yeah, I'd like to be as optimistic as possible but I just don't know. It's going to come down to how well they play within the division. Last season, the results were not good. It'll be interesting to see how they match up with Detroit because I do like our pitching. But we're going to have to find more hitting from somewhere.. and I just don't see Johnny Damon as the answer. And I'm sure it's asking too much for 4 healthy months of Grady Sizemore. So i don't know.. we'll see. Like everyone else.. I got caught up in their hot start last year and didn't really look at the teams deficiencies. I think this team is better than last year's 80 win team... I'm just not sure it's MUCH better unfortunately. Would love to be wrong though..

    WhiteGoodman

  • Injuries decimated the Tribe outfield and ate away at other positions last year. The club must keep the disabled list short if it is to have any chance of staying in the race. If the Indians can stay healthy, they should win more than half their games, whether they contend or not.

But 83 or 84 wins won’t be enough to capture the division title, and it’s difficult to construct a realistic scenario that would boost the total to 90, which probably is what it will take. With an additional wild-card entry is added to the postseason schedule this year, the Indians might have a chance to make the playoffs, but.....

20 games? Wow! While the Tigers are clearly the most talented team in this division, 20 games will not happen. They will win it however. I think the Tribe as a legit chance at one of the wild card spots IF the pitching can be consistent (Masterson and Jiminez) and Hafner and Choo can stay healthy. I may be in the minority, but I also like the addition of Damon from a veteran leadership standpoint of been there and knows what it takes to get there. If he has anything left, this team could be there at the end.

  • I think the tigers have it sewn up early they have had a couple games that make me wonder but that line up is brutal for opposing teams.

Angels won the division by 21 games in '08. They don't have to be the best team in baseball in a long time...who knows if they are even the best team this year. But the rest of the division is probably 15 games worse than the Tigers. The American League Central Division is weak. Playing the Royals and Twins 18-19 times can only help the Indians.

How about a 4th or 5th outfielder on a good team? I want him to be good, but it certainly isn't happening...at least not yet.

    2010....246 average and .296 OBP and 22 RBI...bad
    2011... .266 average and .318 OBP and 46 RBI...bad
2012... .196 average and .274 OBP and 4 RBI...too early to judge, but we are 10% of the way through the season

In my opinion he is below average in center field as well.

He's only 24, so I'm not giving up on him. But he's gotta show something soon.

brantley is more like a AAAA (4A) player. A little bit above AAA, but not an everyday major leaguer.

  • I think anyone can hang with the Tigers. And I am a huge Tigers fan.

The media will pitch this Tigers team as a potential WS squad. and maybe they are. But I don't think so. The Tigers failed to address their greatest need. The bullpen. Starting pitching IMO was the second greatest need. We've got Verlander who is the best in baseball and a couple other decent guys and thats it. and I HATE HATE HATE Valverde as the closer. I don't care how many saves he got last season. It was a fluke because every single one of those saves scared the crap out of me. Valverde is showing it this year.

I think the Tigers signed Prince for one reason, to put more butts in seats and more eyes on the TV. Dombrowski is trying to build a dynasty. The pitching will come later. Until then he'll make the playoffs and might get lucky. He'll do whatever he can to hold onto Verlander and maintain status quo while he slowly makes moves.

I'm not sure it will work long term but I think thats his plan. Regardless, I think any team has a chance against us. But you better come to play. Because we score runs. And if Verlander is pitching, it will be tough for you to do the same.

You may be right regarding the playoffs. However, the regular season can be dominated with average pitching and a strong offensive lineup. The Yankees have done it forever. There are so many mediocre pitchers in baseball that a good offensive lineup can light it up and cover the shortfalls of a pitching staff....the playoffs usually sort this out.

    Buckeyenut

  • No way they stick with the Tigers all year. Fighting for the conjured up "everbody gets a trophy" second wild card spot would seem possible though.

Thats basically what I'm saying. Dombrowski is happy with the mediocre pitching staff that can get us to the playoffs with our bats. But we aren't a World Series contender yet IMO. I think bringing on Prince wasn't necessary. But he puts butts in seats and creates conversation. That improves the brand and generates revenue. I think the Tigers are setting up to develop more while riding the Verlander traing. I think in a few years the Tigers will finally have qualioty pitching to go with the solid offense.

But we'll see. I'm just speculating.

  • As I see it the Tigers should run away with the title due to talented hitting and average pitching. But they also have a commited owner, a good GM with a good drafting/scouting and a rabid fan base. I call them MILD (mike illich, leyland and dumbowski). During the John Hart years, the Tribe had a committed owner, a great farm system and a great pool of hitting in the outfield and the corners. Not so much today. I call them SAAD (shaprio, acta, antonelli, dolan). The best that could happen would be for Dolan to sell out to Dan Gilbert. Should Tigers falter as they have in the past few years, Leyland must go. Just saying.
