Can Urban Meyer better Jim Tressel's Record at OSU?

  • Watch how much Urban ages in the next couple years he is here! I saw it with Tress. After year 5 the stress and pressure of winning starts manifesting itself physically.

  • Yep the white hair & the wrinkles. So sad Tress gave his life for fans who don't even care about him & can't even appreciate his success. They always want to compare & drag him down the mad. Buckeye fans be happy and expect the best for the team with Meyer, but you don't have to trash Tress in the process. The same respect we give to Woody should be the same respect to Tressel.

I wonder what these buckeye fans will do if they were Oklahoma fans or even Texas fans. I guess the B12 is weak also, right.

  • I think the world of Urban Meyer and think he is the best coach in the game, and in 10 years we will see about that statement. It will be VERY, VERY hard to surpass what Jim Tressel accomplished at Ohio State. Tress did not set the bar high at OSU, but he rather elevated the program into the stratosphere.. One caveat about Urban Meyer that only time will answer.."Is Ohio State getting the same passion-driven man that coached at Florida??"

  • JT set the bar very high. Shame to lose him the way we did. That said, I hope we go undefeated for the next 20 years.

Ok, a little off season down time fun! Question:... if Urban Meyer stays here 10 years, can he better Jim Tressel's record of accomplishments as Head Coach of the Buckeyes?

Not stating of being a fan of Jim Tressel or being his supporter, I am just stating his record which is a fact. His ending or fall, are not part of the discussion, here. Just the facts....I am not interesting in hearing an attack on Tressel......just stating his performance.......

9 wins aganist Michigan. 7 wins in a row aganist Michigan Six B10 outright or shared Conference titles. 6-4 bowl record, won 1 NC, played in 3 NC games. 106-22 record or ,828 % winning, Big 10 record of 66-14

What do you think....Can Meyer better or match Tress's stats?.

How many times are we going to ask the same question! Urban Meyer can't be a whole lot better, how can he?

I have no doubt he will whatsoever, if..... He stays long enough. He will out-recruit and out-coach the rest of the BIG10. He will kill it in the post season as well... Only a handful of coaches can match his intensity, attention to detail, work ethic, and personality. It truly amazes me what Tress did with the staff he had. But in the End, Meyer will be better.

You must be young! how can he be better than tress? If he matches his record that would be amazing!

In all honesty, I kind of hope not. The last decade was phenomenal, and the Buckeyes for the most part were able to win all of the games they were supposed to win. The Conference Championships, the BCS appearances, etc. were all special. However, I hope Urban is faced with a much tougher B1G across the board. I think OSU suffered in the national picture because the B1G did not challenge us. We were able to take good, not great, OSU teams and use Tresselball to squeak out victories. It let us keep mediocre assistants around for far too long, because the league wasn't good enough to make it essential for them to be replaced with better coaches. And it let us take more regional players just so they wouldn't go to the B1G competition, but didn't force us to go national to get the best and be competitive with the elite programs.

JT had a remarkable tenure here, but was aided by a somewhat down era in the B1G. I want the Buckeyes battle tested at the end of the year. I want them to get dinged here and there to learn and spur growth to be great when it matters. I want the B1G to be feared from coast to coast.

I agree! I think we should fall down just short of the goal line and lose some games because heaven forbid we keep winning! FCOL!!!

  • Of course he could...but does anyone REALLY believe he will b here that long? Hope I'm wrong, and I get it, it's his "dream job", but be honest with your self. Meyer settle in for at least 10 yrs? Don't see it...but again, hope I'm wrong.

  • Yes he can, but will he? If he coaches same amt of yrs he is a lock

  • Here is my take...... Take Treassel 3 Teams that played in NC against Urbans 3 best teams. Head to head Meyer is 1-0. I give the 2002 the nod in one and urban over 2007 team that lost to LSU. So Urban goes 2-1. That would be my measuring stick to start with. Bottom line IMO is that with tOSU brand and Meyer I think he pulls an incredible talent pool in the next 5-7 years. Our biggest issue will be complacency if we accomplish a lot of what we all have expectation wise. Tressel came in with about half the expectations so in that vain Urban is the better coach at least now. I love being in this quandary. Treassel us a legend but Urban already has that status based on his body of work elsewhere. With all the tools available here the sky is the limit.

  • We dont have to face all of the best b10 teams everyyear anymore. Some years we dont have to play Michigan St, Nebraska, or Iowa. We'll see, but even with their being a B10 championship game, I still think we will have very easy schedules in the future. Urban also has a great record against rivals. I dont think he will go 9-1 against TTUN, but he will win alot more than he loses thats for damn sure. I think we get at least one championship with Urban too. We're going to win alot of games in the future, alot. Thats the only thing im sure of

  • I also think Urban will be a better coach than he was in the past. Hes said it before, hes had a whole year to sit back and learn new things, and evaluate himself and the things he does.

  • I happen to think Meyer is a much better coach, but he may not have a better record. The B1G seems to have bottomed out. Though Tressel was a fine coach, he benefited greatly from the conference being down the last few years--especially Michigan. It is hard to forget the only head to head contest between Meyer and Tressel. That was one of the most embarrassing beat downs I have ever witnessed.

  • Didbt read the responses yet, but I'm gonna say no, and that will not mean failure in any way.

    Jcoz

  • Both are great coaches that have spoiled Ohio St. Fans.
Expectations could be Urban's albotross. Urban is highly energized with momentum on his side. He will need that to get off to a fast start. It could get ugly if he doesn't have success early. Tressel set the bar high and i think Urban is up to the task.
The spewers saying Tressel had bad assistant coaches are clueless.
Ironically Urban failure for sustaining success at Florida will make him a better coach at Ohio State.
