Carter

  • so many ruled this guy out, including myself, but some dudes on the free board this winter were saying he could be a very good DL. I have been reading some old posts on him. He is no doubt fighting, and as Meyer said, if he gets in better shape (which I am thinking will happen under the new staff) he will get a lot of playing time.

Can you imagine a 350 pound Simon? lol

  • Let's not get carried away here, "350 lb Simon"? No. If he can be anything like big Hank, and possibly replace him it will be great.

If there is ever a 350 pound simon he will be the best player ever.

You dismiss him as being Simon caliber but compare him to the better pro prospect in Hankins? You also presume he could possibly "replace" him when some early draft experts have Hankins going as high as 6th in next years draft! !??

Cmon man I love Johnny Simon myself but you don't go and replace top 5-10 draft picks year to year. They are all bad comparisons IMO, lets hope Carter becomes Michael Dean Perry ish without his brother "The Fridge's" body.

Carter is strictly a 1 technique and I dont forsee that expanding to a 3 tech anytime soon. But, what a weapon to have if he becomes an effective 1 and takes up blockers and space up the middle.

He could improve our red zone D exponentially with his size taking up space freeing up playmakers from blockers making it next to impossible for the opposition to run. And with a shortened field, its already difficult to pass, but especially when your applying pressure and your DB's know there is a higher
percentage of pass play being called in those situations as a result to what a disruptive 1 technique can do to the effectiveness of a running game.

  • I love how any time the staff praises someone some people go over the top on them.

They were pleasantly surprised by the job he did on the DL. That is mostly because they weren't expecting much at all from him. He got up field in a spring game against a mixed OL unit in which his only responsibility was to go straight forward.

If you want to expect something out of him, expect him to get some short yardage situation defense where he has the same responsiblity. Push straight up field and cause disruption in the backfield if possible.

If he can be half of hank I'll be thrilled. At the least he'll be able to help on run downs and short yardage right away and next year he'll hopefully be able to help out if/when Hank leaves.

  • Here's what I heard from a friend who gets updates from inside....Carter has one position - NT. He is nowhere near as agile as Hank, and the least agile of any DL they have and will NEVER play the 3tech that Hankins currently plays. The staff sees him as a gap plugger or for pushing the center or guard into the backfield. He still struggles with weight and may never hit that 320-330 plateau that Marroti wants out of him. What he needs to get better at is coming up from a 4 point stance and hitting the OL with punch before he gets knocked off balance and staying low enough to get push. From the sound of it, he'll fill the depth chart at NT but will probably never start. Still not even sure if he'll even play in the future as more talent comes in. He's probably only going to play on run downs as he can't get into the backfield on passing downs that well cause his only move is a bull rush. The one position I hear the staff likes him in is NT on a 3-4 cause he can take up a gap well and doesn't have to get into the backfield much. If he continues the good attitude and gets his weight down then we might see him on short yardage situations.

Sorry to be the downer on this thread but the question was asked so I'm just giving you what I was told.

Big Hank is a top 15 pick in the draft on Kipers board. Id say that statement would make any lineman REALLY good so i am not sure your point. as you said lets not get carried away. Carter will never be hank and thats not a horrible thing because very few people will be.

  • Agree they Duron should get one more chance. Could really add to the receiving core next year, at worst he boosts the teams video game n white girl slaying skills.

    ALLDAYYY

  • I doubt Carter ever sees the field much at all, he has lost weight, but the speed and sideline to sideline athleticism Meyer wants, plus gap explosion is not there.
With young SSDE/DT's like Hale, Schutt, Bennett, Hankins, (and yes I think he stays next year, know his HS mentor well), Washington and incoming elites like Bosa, Sprinkle (could easily end up in the 290 range with his frame), Hill and Price, not sure Carter ever sees much time at all.

  • If he were like Simon, he wouldn't be 350. He would be in the best shape of his life because of working his ass off instead of keeping Popeye's chicken in business. You don't get that big by exercising.
