Caryer: Sullinger and the NBA

Basketball columnist Lee Caryer examines the thought process Jared Sullinger may use in deciding to stay at OSU or head off to the NBA after this season.

  • Hope I'm wrong but I think Sullinger will be average to below average in the nba. If he was 2-3 inches he could be a All Star.

But he won't be able to score on NBA bigs and won't be able to guard NBA small forwards on the perimeter.

I have to disagree Alpha. Do you think Paul Millsap is more talented than Sully? He is the exact same size and no more athletic than Sully and he is a borderline all-star. You can't base everything on measurements. It's not like he is Kenneth Faried and playing 90% of his college games against overwhelmed opponents. Sully is going up against the best big men in college hoops and putting up consistent numbers.

He will be able to score against NBA PF's because he has extremely soft hands, a high IQ and can finish after contact. He will also be very effective in the pick and roll hitting mid-range jumpers which is so much more a part of the NBA than college.

  • As always, excellent assessment of the situation. I am confident that the decision making process is outlined nearly to the "T" here. IMO Sully should leave after this year if things remain as they are right now. The key to leaving is that as stated the longer he stays the more the scouts can find wrong with him. The scouts have already most likely come to the conclusion he will struggle to guard anyone in the big leagues. They were already aware that he does not play above the rim but considered it a wash due to his physicality. I do not necessarily worry about Sully being average in the NBA. I am an old schooler and Sully's play reminds me a lot of that of Adrian Dantley who enjoyed a quite successful and lengthy stay in the NBA. I do not however see Sully being an elite player in the big leagues.

  • If I want to look at the situation objectively, Jared would be a fool to pass up the millions the NBA offers. Bottom line is we all go to college with intent to get paid more when we're finished...if somebody would've told me I could leave college after a year or two and become an instant millionaire or stay for all four and risk not being a millionaire, I would not think twice about the decision.

Yes, college was 4 of the best years of my life - but if I was Jared, I would also have to consider my financial security for the 50 years after college.

Side note - I hope like hell he stays.

  • Alpha..

I think Sully may have a long career, but agree that he might be just an average player.

I hope we are both wrong because we love Sully.

Lee - I hope you are right about Buford turning the corner. We need him to make a big run in the tourney. At some point we will have a game like tonight where he will have to shine.

I remember seeing Amarie S. play in high school and I thought he needed college to work on his facing the basket. I didn't think he was big enough to play with his back to the basket like he did in HS. Well i think he got with the right team as he didn't have to play much half court offense his first 7 or 8 years in the NBA.

Amare is like 2-3 inches taller then Sully. If sully had his height I think he would be dominate in the NBA.

I could see him being Carlos Boozer with even better range and post moves. Boozer is 6'9" and has been a consistent 18/10 guy for 9 years playing against PFs like Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett in their primes.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize he won't be a 3 in the league. Who knows if he can be a good 4, most of them are taller nowadays but that doesn't mean he'll be a flop. Kevin Love is 6'9 also and is the best rebounder and shooting big (besides Dirk) in the league. Zach Randolph is a 20/10 guy at 6'9, Boozer is barely 6'8 and has put up good numbers, and David West was always a solid 17/10 type of guy also. It's possible he could be a nice starting pro but time will tell. He'll need to develop a mid range game to become effective. There is no way he can bang down low with guys who are 6'11 all day and expect to get 20/gm, just won't happen. All the guys I mentioned can shoot the 15 footer and Love has 3 point range.

  • Chris Broussard and Steven A. Smith who both work for ESPN have said that Sully will be a Mid 1st round pick at best, probably later(15-25). They have said that NBA scouts do not believe that Sully is athletic enuff or explosive enuff to be anything more than a journeyman player at best. They have also said that by the time this year ends...his stock could drop way down...that Sully missed his opportunity at the real big bucks by not coming out after last year. Those are not the only ones that i have heard slam Sully...Tim Legler, Jay Bilas, and guys like that have given opinions that Sully will be a bust...great college player that doesn't translate to NBA. I personally believe they are all full of shit and that Sully will do well in the NBA no matter when he chooses to come out. Go Bucks!!!

I don't see a great NBA player either. But I also do not see an average or below average player. Glen Davis is someone who can be compared to Sully, and he is an average player. I see Sully being better than Big Baby.

Yeah, he is absolutely not a 3 in the association. I would think if for whatever reason Sully slides a bit in the draft (8-12) slots, that team would be very happy. But that is the thing, if a team picks him up at 3 or 4 it could be considered a reach due just because he plays the below the rim game and isn't a 'long' player. That said, if he continues to work on his mid range/pick and roll game I think he'll be a solid nbaer. Maybe not perennial all star, but def solid player.

    Trumbley

  • Count me in with the group of people who don't really care to decide whether or not he'll be a success in the NBA. I'm gonna enjoy him while he's here and hope he gets drafted as high as possible. We just won't know if his game will translate well to the NBA until he actually plays his first game.

However, if a guy like like Glen Davis can at the very least make a name for himself as a valuable rotation player, I like Sully's chances to be a difference maker at the next level.

Besides Sullinger, if you asked me the player who in my opinion has the best potential to be a special player in the NBA I'd say it's Sam (the Astronaut) Thompson. Crazy athleticism, plays tough defense, has a decent shot which can be worked on. Scouts are gonna love him.

Says he's feeling "OK", also said “I’ll be good this Saturday.”

Hopefully he just landed on his knee a little funny and coaches were just being cautious not putting him back in last night.

That's why Tyrus Thomas goes 4th and Paul Millsap goes 47th. You take the guy who can jump out of the gym, I'll take the guy with solid game.

  • kevin love was the exact same player as sully when he was at ucla. Look for sully to have similar success in the NBA
