Chicago Help

  • Headed to the windy city next wed-sun for a baseball tourney. tourney starts friday so were looking for a few things to see or do while there. staying north of the city in Deerfield. Wife wants to go shopping downtown. Anyone know whether it would be better to drive down or take a bus/train? any other suggestions would be great. Thanks

  • Depends when you are going in...if during a week day or you are leaving after 3pm, I wouldn't drive as the traffic is horrible.

As far as shopping, Michigan ave (aka magnificent mile) is the touristy place to shop. Locals will hit up North Ave., Armitage Ave. and Halsted just north of Armitage (we lived there for two years and this was my wife's favorite spots)

Lincoln Park Zoo is free and right next to the park and Observatory. From there you can also walk to the North Ave. beach, which is awesome.

There is a bar at the top of the Hancock building that is free so you don't have to pay. Millennium park has the bean and buckingham fountain is also close to there. Rose Angelis is an amazing italian restaurant in Lincoln Park. If you want to go out around the downtown area, I recommend Rush St.

  • I lived there twice and my office is there.

If you are looking to shop miracle mile is fine but as the other guy said a total tourist trap.

Your wife may like Filene's Basement. Definitely wait in line for Garret Popcorn. There are now. Two locations with the one on State being my favorite but they have another just off Michigan near he Apple Store.

If you are staying in Deerfiled you must hit up the Deerfield Bakery. Voted Chicago best like 20 years straight and my favorite. Round doughnut with white glaze with chocolate drizzle filled with a decadent chocolate mousse -heaven.

For shopping send her to the woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. Also hit Lou Malnati's pizza. Best in Chicago hands down and not a tourist trap like Geno's. There is one in Buffalo Grove which is close to Deerfield, also on plum grove road in Schaumburg or downtown as well.

  • Also best restaurant in my opinion is A Tavalo. Just west of downtown. Tell Dan (owner and chef) that one of Donna's friends sent you. Best gnocchi in the world.

  • I would actually recommend Pequod's for deep dish, best in the city IMO.

  • Just make your way to the Weiner's Circle after the kids are asleep and order yourself a chocolate milkshake. Delish!censored

It's in Lincoln Park on Clybourn, just north of Webster.

    And it's awesome.

  • The Field Museum is awesome and so is the museum of science and industry. Francesca's in little Italy is a great restaurant . For a good steak check out Mike dickas off Michigan ave

  • If you are in Deerfield, which is way north west side, a great itilian restaurant is Philly G's in Lincolnshire (reservations needed)--it is a bit pricy but great food. Philly G's is on old 22 just west of Milwaukee in Lincolnshire where you will probably be staying---a lot of hotels and eateries. Second place is in Wheeling is Bob Chins Seafood restaurant. Garlic rolls and all--Excellent sea food and again slightly pricy but excellent food.

I think the Webber grill in Wheeling has closed but I am not sure. There are a ton of sports bars and places to go that are on Milwaukee between Lincolnshire and Wheeling about a 7 or 8 mile drive.

Enjoy your time there, the food is excellent.

  • Nightlife on Rush is pretty good. I go to Hunt Club and the Irish bar across the street from it. Lots of good bars on Division, though some are the younger crowd. Wrigleyville is also hopping when Cubs are in town, especially right after the games let out (not sure if Cubs are home next weekend or not).

Gino's East pizza downtown is pretty good. Joe's Steaks and Seafood near the downtown Marriott is also outstanding.

Lawry's Prime Rib downtown never disappoints.

Great, great pizza place downtown: Lou Malnati's (there are other locations around town as well).

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Think she has decided to hit downtown shopping and the Navy Pier on Thursday. What time would be the best to head down from Deerfield? Does the "L" even go up that far? What's the best way to get downtown?

  • Take the train downtown... take a river tour, go to Wrigley Field, walk up and down Michigan Ave. north of the river... lots of great restaurants mentioned earlier in other poster's replies... go to the John Hancock building to the 95th floor (makes you appreciate what a great city Chicago is).
I lived in Chicago for about 20 years...

  • I basically lived in Chicago for 3 years and am still there a lot. I still don't understand why you can't get good Chicago style pizza outside of Chicago. It just makes no sense to me.

Even the worst pizza joints in Chicago are 10x better than other pizza places outside of Chicago.

Anyway, I worked there had my house and family in Ohio... it wasn't too bad, just lots of travel...when my wife and kids would come visit on the weekends during the summer they always loved to go to the Navy Pier. Tons to see and do, lots of places to grab some food.

Traffic is not as bad as some other cities (Atlanta, D.C.), but the train system in Chicago is really good. It's pretty easy to follow and if you're not sure, just ask, I have no doubt you will get lots of help.

I say go for the tourist stuff...after all you are a tourist!

  • Shedd aquarium is really fun. Great for the kids. I believe it is one of the best aquariums in the world. Quick food: Portillos for a chicago style hot dog.
