  • @Buzzard, you are correct. If every group were to go over every thing with a fine tooth comb wed spend our lives picketing everything. Every 5 minutes Subway has a guy in a cheesy mustaches rowing a boat on a Venetian canal singing a butchered version of O Sole Mio advertising the Italian sub. Wheres the outrage? Its a silly commercial. People are SO quick to complain or cast themselves as victims that its annoying. The Wahoo logo IMO is the best in baseball.

  • Come to think of it, about 10 years ago an intramural team made up of Native Americans at a university in Colorado (or some place out west) adopted the team name "Fighting Whities". The logo was of a white guy that they wore at games. Of course it was well received and everybody had a good laugh and they sold a lot of shirts. I dont remember being outraged I thought it was cool.

  • I have always wondered why Native Americans took offense at sports teams being named with Native American terms. A team is usually named after a noble figure or a ferocious animal or warrior. To me, that seems to be honoring the mascot. The one thing I can understand is their stance against demeaning caricatures such as Chief Wahoo. That is offensive to me as well.
Most Americans are sympathetic to the Native American plight. And, believe it or not, most were sympathetic in the 18th century when atrocities were being committed right here in Ohio. But the frontiersmen and Kentucky militiamen committing the atrocities pretty much went unpunished due to the land-hungry greed of the politicians and military of that day. Jacob Greathouse slaughtered Chief Logan's entire family and actually lived a long life afterward, unpunished until Blue Jacket caught him at the mouth of the Scioto, tied his intestines to a small tree, and made him walk around the tree until every inch was wound around the tree.

Just curious how many Buckeyes also like the Tribes Chief Wahoo logo. Every year Cleveland is picketed by Native Americans contending the the Chief is racist. I personally love the logo and think its being a bit over sensitive to complain. Ive yet to hear about the Irish demanding a change to Notre Dames little leprechaun.

It's a relic from a bygone era and should be changed. If the Indians name and subsequent logo was bestowed -- as "Fighting Irish" and the leprechaun logo was -- as more compliment than stereotypical children's character, i personally would have less of a problem with it. But the Chief Wahoo character is based in lazy stereotyping, is neither flattering or complimentary and is completely offensive to a protected group in American society.

  • I cant argue that Native Americans have had an extremely rough go of it since whites arrived. However, just about every group has been mistreated at some point. I dont see that as a legitimate part of this argument. Go talk to ANY ethnic group about their treatment from by gone eras and most arent pretty. Lets not forget that native tribes werent exactly kind to each other either.

  • The list could go on and on if people wanted to be over sensitive. Plus, who decides what constitutes a majestic or proud representation of an Indian. I see people pay for caricatures of themselves at amusement parks all over the country. Are we going to have twins getting mad at the Minnesota Twins? The Celtic mascot isnt exactly flattering either. The UNLV Runnin Rebel with his big furry mustache? They are logos not a way to secretly promote racism. For Gods sake they are cartoons. Perhaps Christians should organize a protest for Anaheim and San Diego. The depiction of a fat bald Padre could be deemed offensive. Btw, the old Padre logo is also one of the best around.

No it isn't. It is only offensive to a segment of a protected group in American Society.

  • It is pretty racist. Compare it to tons of propaganda from past centuries. It's not as bad as "Redskins" tho. Can't use washington bullets but can use redskins? Something seems wrong

    mikesti33

  • And FYI, FSU makes an effort to honor the tribe. I'm not against the term Indians, or even a "chief wahoo," but the traditional logo is racist. I don't really even personally care but if it is offensive to someone why not change it? Honestly, see a lot of bigotry on this page. Disappointing. Our country has become completely overly sensitive and too politically correct - case in pt, Urban apologizing for use of lavender. Ridiculous.

BUT an offensive logo that closely resembles offensive propaganda, or team name like "redskins" - that is offensive to people that are passionate about their culture.

Idk how anyone could have a problem with this post, but guessing some will, I bet I could take these same stereotypes but in your real life, or your kids, and you'd be mad.

We just need to find a happy medium between too politically correct to a ridiculous point and too insenstive. Especially to a culture that has been oppressed thoughout the existence of our nation.

  • Let's see here...the name Indians came from one of the players that was Native American....when the Tribe was rocking in the 90's MORE Native Americans were PROUD of it due to it being a sign of power and success....if anyting the Native Americans and all Tribe fans should be pissed and offended that the Dolan's bought the team and also at the structure of the MLB.

  • As with any Protestors...You have to keep things in perspective. It's the "Squeaky Wheel" syndrome. A lot of noise from a small thing...seldom do the demonstrators speak for the masses.

After all, isn't just about everything, offensive to someone?
