Colt Pettit, OL Prospect, 2014

This kid can play. The 6'4" 240 pound OL/DL from Patrick Henry can handle any lineman in Ohio in the class of 2014. Benched 289 and squatted 370 on Monday. Great feet and speed. Can't wait to show his stuff at the big camps this summer. Just turned 16 on Sunday, has the potential to be 6'5-6'6" 275-290 by senior year. Only Division V sophomore to make the first team all district in Ohio. Also dominated the division II and III older players that he played against this past season. Plans to camp at Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, and Miami this summer. Could be the top lineman in Ohio in the class of 2014.

He looks like a really nice athlete as a young big guy. But level of comp is an obvious concern. Not really on Buckeye radar, but I could see a D1 player eventually. Right now I would project a MAC Guard.

Okay, fair enough. Look at his tape first and then tell me what you think. And also, give me some other names of sophomores on the OL in Ohio that may be the best. I'd love to see them on tape so I can compare. Take a look at scouting.ohio and tell me what you think. I appreciate your feedback.

Sure seems like a quality young prospect. D5 kids normally don't get a lot of attention from the big boys. Hopefully he fills out a little more as he gets older. I always like to hear about kids like this. Good luck to the young man.

Yes. Brother was Division V defensive player of the year in Ohio in 2008 and now plays at Central Michigan. Dad was a scholarship player at Kent State. Dad is 6'4" 350 brother is 6'3" 290 mom is 5'8.

Although I know of some smaller division players that have made an impact, I agree with you in general. However, the recruiting landscape has changed in that kids with big upsides from smaller schools are getting more attention because of the John McCallisters, Mark Porters, Bill Kurelics, Duane Longs, and Steve Hellwagens...those guys know their stuff and generally get it right.

I haven't seen Evan Lisle (class of 2013) from Centerville except for a picture, but Colt Pettit will probably look like him this time next year. He certainly has some of the same qualities that has been written about Lisle.

Pettit has a lot of potential. Just have to take what you see with a grain of salt knowing who he plays against.
The oline list is pretty short at this point for 2014. I know I'm forgetting someone, but off the top of my head here's a couple to keep an eye on.
Jimmy Byrne 6-4 275 St. Ignatius
Jake Grant 6-4 270 Reynoldsburg
Nick Richardson 6-4 285 Westerville Central
Marcellus Jones 6-3 325 Glenville
That's all I've got off the top of my head. Again, I feel like I'm missing a name or two that should be here.

Duane hit it right on the head; besides his quickness and strength, he does play violently and nasty; an obvious good trait for a football player.

If at all possible, I would advise that this kid transfer to a school that plays better comp. I know not all family members are equipped to move or go to private school but it would be a great idea.

I respect your comment alpha, but a player is a player, and the great programs find the great players no matter what the level of competition. Aaron Craft played in Division V, and believe me, he could have played football for the Buckeyes. There are many more examples of players from smaller divisions who played big time college ball.

True, talent can be recognized even at smaller schools. Like TP in high school. But that has to be taken into account. The best example I can think of is Corey Timmons. After his sophomore film for Springfield Central Catholic, I had him neck and neck with Deveon Smith as the best back in the class. He transferred to Springfield HS this year, which is a big jump in level of comp, and proved me wrong. Looked much less impressive and is now considered a middle of the pack type of safety.

I'm sure Dad is proud, and looking for an honest evaluation....which reading what Duane and Mark wrote, he has a lot of reason to be proud.
Good Luck to the young man, like any great Ohio athlete, I really enjoy seeing young men progress and become good enough to be Buckeyes.
