Arkansas, Ohio State, and all other schools pay assistant salaries so they have MORE money for other teachers and programs.
If a school saves a Mil or 2 on coaches salaries and as a result they lose a couple more games, and sell a few less tickets, jerseys, and perhaps most importantly receive fewer alumni donations, they could easily see their revenue dip by $5 - 10M.
Assistant salaries do not compete with educational funds, they are an investment intended to generate a return. Some of these 'investments' are wildly successful, others are a colossal flop.
