This question may be a bit premature with NLOI day still 4 weeks away. However of the guys currently committed for 2013, which do you see making the biggest/earliest impact?
Offense and Defense...and why
For me on Offense it is Jalin Marshall. I know he is raw at the WR position but Meyer and Hermann will figure out a way to get the ball in his hands. He is a play maker and can get separation (unlike most of our current WR's) I just think ultimately he is too special of an athlete to keep him off the field. We need more play makers in this offense and there is no doubt Jalin can make plays.
On Defense I think it will be Eli Apple. He is college ready now and with not a lot of experience fighting for that #2 CB spot opposite Roby, I think Eli will be given every opportunity to play early.
*Disclaimer* If we get Von Bell my choice changes LOL
Go Bucks!! Can't wait for NLOI Day
Johnny Townsend will as he will start immediately in my eyes.
Easy answer but I will go to the spirit of the original question which is Hill at DT. I'm expecting a Hankins type freshmen year out of him. I think he can come in and play a lot and be in the 2 deep where we actually rotate guys. Apple is a good choice but I can't remember the last time I saw 3 real corners on the field. Not saying he doesn't beat out Doran, but I will say he won't this season.
As for offense, I'll go with Jalin as the obvious answer. Love this kid, just wish he was rnrolling early.
Townsend on defense, this should be an upgrade over our Buchanan punting over the last few years. EE on offense as I think he is very smart and talented and can run or catch.
LOL I should have noted minus the kicker:)
I know it's a long shot for Eli to beat out Doran, but certainly not impossible. Marcus Baugh is 2nd for me on Offense. I love everything about him.
Johnny Townsend is very important. We netted only 35 yards per punt...got many blocked that could have cost us games. Special teams is an area we need to clean up drastically. If you take away special teams misques there are 3-4 games that were close that would have been much more comfortable without these mistakes...
Good post Townsend maybe the most important freshmen.
I think it will be Jalin on offense playing a wing back type of role, I just think he will make big plays from the moment he arrives on campus.
On D Im going to go with Mitchell and Johnson...our LB was so poor last season and those 2 kids seem like an upgrade over the freshman we brought in last year.
If no one steps up on offense, I still think the pieces are in place and we will be improved. The key has to be on the defensive side of the ball. We have our QB, RB depth is very good, OL loses one starter, but Decker and Dodson should more than make up for that, and our WRs that got PT are all back (need upgrades, I know, but it's not a hole left due to graduation).
I know it's tough to expect a kid to come in at MLB, but we are going to need it from Mitchell (or someone). The DL will be young, but a strength, so the LBs should be freed up to be playmakers. We need guys to step up. Burrows would be second on my list. We lose Howard at CB, get back Roby, but there were questions all year long about Grant, Pittsburgh seems to be a Safety, and Adam Griffin was high on the depth chart. We need three who are serviceable, and have one, maybe two. Might need Conley to step up, too.
Zona all our guys have to do at WR is not drop the ball...it cost bad this year.
^Truth! Devin Smith was by far the most frustrating player for me to watch this past season...Christian Bryant was second,
Both mentioned, Marshall and Townsend. At this point those seem the most logical.
After watching all of the all-american games this past week, this question has a lot of possible answers.
Offense: I have to go with either Jalin or Zeke. The line this year will be good and Baugh may be an option but these two guys stand out because of their skill set. Jalin looks like a receiver and his long catch should have been a TD if he was led on the throw. He is a burner. As for Zeke I saw everything on the pass he got out of the backfield. On the catch he juked a guy and then raced down the sideline to set up a manageable 4th and 1. These two men have a skill set that Meyer needs and that no one on the current roster possesses. One of them (or both) should make a big splash in 2013.
Defense: I know the common theme has been Mitchell or Johnson since its a big area of need, but I'll be a little unconventional. I have faith that Boom Perkins, Jamal Marcus, and Josh Perry will actually grow in this off season. They could add a lot of speed to the middle part of our D. My prediction for freshman impact player will be Joey Bosa. He looks like a physical specimen right now. I wish Simon had a year left to lift with Bosa but I think he will be a workout warrior anyways. Joey looks poised and has a lot of speed and power. He may be able to play a Cam Hayward type roll of sliding down to d-tackle or playing out at d-end. Either way he looks physically ready to be a force at tOSU.
Dark horse: (If Von Bell signs the above changes) But I like what I have seen from Jayme Thompson. He looked like a tough, fast, and smart safety. he could add some real depth this season. Hopefully, this class plays as well as the OSU 2002 and 2005 classes did in the past.
Eli Apple. I think he has a shot to beat out Doran Grant. I also think Bosa plays a lot on the defensive line.
I hate to be the realist in the thread, but many of these kids, I.e. Jalin Marshall will have. only 2.5 months in the entire program before the first game. Many are not enrolling until June.. What frosh had the biggest impact last year, Spence, Dunn, Decker, AWash, Thomas etc.. NONE had a BIG impact at all really. Spence and Diesel had some...
The answer is Townsend, he is the only one who is going to play right away.
Realistically, if you need an answer you'd have to go with an early enrollee such as Apple.
Joey Bosa is the only one I see getting time on a brand new d line.
jalin will be a star, but he needs more than 2.5 months to create the Impact many of you are hoping for!

WRs are definitely nice-to-haves. They are not must-haves, IMO. Although a couple of gamebreakers would be phenomenal in this offense, and would make everyone else that much more dangerous.
Marcus Baugh will definitely play. He is too good not to. Jalin Marshall will have some role out of the backfield and in the slot. Eli Apple or Gareon Conley will get a chance to play with depth at DB.
If Dontre Wilson or Corn Elder get in here they have a shot to play.
Cleveland Orchestra Baby!! World's greatest!! The Brown's wet dream is to be them. The Ohio State University-Where the Illibuck Lives!
I completely disagree...
I agree Townsend is a starter...mark it down.
I think there are freshmen that are gonna be kick returners. I see Jacobs,Marshall, Elliot, and if we get Elder at kick returns. We are good at punt return with Brown but we need a dynamic guy at KR and IMO we have the horses coming in to supply that.
I think Hill and Bosa will get snaps at DL...I would not sleep on Mungher either. We will need 4 DT's to play...Carter might transfer and we have already moved other DL to OL...Plus we lose a lot to graduation.
I think Perry will get the nod at one of the linebacker spots and obviously Shazier at the other. Mitchell has a shot to get some serious reps at linebacker. Boren,Klein, and Bino are gone...Linebackers will get PT.
I also believe that you will see a safety or maybe a CB get serious PT.
I see Baugh, Marshall, and maybe a WR getting major PT.
Time will tell...you could be right...
I think this is a fair post, but the OP asked "who would have the biggest impact"? That doesn't necessarily mean they will be out producing upper classmen, it just means of all the freshmen who will have the biggest impact. I thought Bosa b/c of the youth of the Dline, Townsend for the reason you said, and Jalin b/c he may not have a lot of time but if they can find ways to get him the ball in space he could do some explosive things...also on special teams I see him contributing.
Also as you said... We'll see.
We better hope that at least one of our new LBs are ready to play from day 1.
