Should hit news stands this week
Nice but odd timing.
Does SI still do the dumb-as&ed "regional coverage".
Will our posters in Minnesota be treated with a Phil Nelson cover?
cdiddy, I thought the timing was weird as well. Especially strange because he got on the cover over potential NCAA tourney coverage. Oh well. I think it's sweet. Lets hope SI's "curse" doesn't hit Columbus in the fall.
Simple: To sell more copies.
SI will sell more copies in Ohio if Braxton is on the cover here. They'll sell more copies in South Carolina if Clowney is on the cover.
That is one sharp-looking cover.
Ohio State has the largest fanbase in the country. Is SI pandering to their audience? You bet your ass!
They are just doing a spring preview, easy topic issue to sell some copies.
Here was release from SI (cover attached below):
Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, a likely 2013 Heisman Trophy candidate who last year led the Buckeyes to a perfect 12-0 season, is on the cover of the March 4, 2013 issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, on newsstands Wednesday. Miller is featured in SI’s Spring Football Preview.
Senior writer Thomas Lake (@thomaslake) examines how Miller’s difficult childhood in Ohio, which included a family that dealt with financial problems and a case of domestic abuse on the day he committed to Ohio State, has helped him rise to stardom through hard work and determination.
That work ethic helped Miller have the best season in 2012 that no one paid attention to since the Buckeyes were not bowl eligible. However, this fall, Lake says: “Buckeye Nation will count on Miller to lead the program to its eighth national championship.” (PAGE 43)
Last season, Miller ran for 1,271 yards and 13 touchdowns. Says Ohio State lineman Jack Mewhort: “You know you’ve got a guy back there that’s straight out of a video game.”(PAGE 43)
However, he only completed 58% of his passes and ranked 43rd in pass efficiency. That’s why you’ll now find Miller spending hours in the film room and holding players-only practices with his teammates about five times a week this offseason.
Tom Herman, Ohio State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, believes Miller can improve his passing numbers. He tells Lake: “The guy can be as good as there ever was.” (PAGE 47)

Spring Practice starts soon. College football is a lot like the NFL now that there is something going on year round.
Keep in mind, Aaron Craft was just on the cover of SI last month.
SI knows where their bread is buttered. Yeah, Dohrmann did the smear piece on Tress, but they still go out of their way at times to get OSU figures on the cover and paint them in a positive light.
And that Dohrmann piece was really a re-hash of a piece ESPN did on Tressel way back in 2003-04 during the Clarett fiasco. All the stuff from Youngstown State, Ray Issac, etc. Dohrmann just added some nonsense about rigging a raffle at an OSU football camp in 1984 so a player that Tressel was recruiting would become a Buckeye. But most of the items in his story had already been reported by ESPN years earlier.
As they say........there is no such thing as "bad" publicity for SI or any other social/media outlet.
I am sure the smear campaign on Tress sold a shit ton of copies just as much as the Braxton cover wil.....
i hope this isn't the kiss of death like 1969. after we dismantled tcu 63 to 0 in the opener their cover said "if your looking for number 1 it's in columbus ohio". we all know how that season turned out, i'm still not over that game!!!
I may be in the minority, but I'm at a point in my buckeye football fandom where spring practice is way more interesting to me than march madness anyway. Like cowherd is fond of saying, there's 2 seasons: football season and WAITING for football season. Fortunately football has become so popular that there's pretty much football-ish stuff goin on year round and I'm all about it.
I think they do - doubt I'll see this cover on the left coast
No... More Coverage = more recruiting strength. Everyone says YES to the best looking date in town. Rock star coach has a rock star QB and is on a national title hunt. Keep it coming!
You don't see the dangers I do. Hope and pray is all I'll say.
That cover looks sweet!
I think we are safe from the curse since it's so early and the season has not begun yet. I'm counting on it!!!
So Diddy, still waiting on that promotion for vp of marketing? Jk.
I hope not, but that was the first thing to come to my mind when I saw it.
You see that sign that says 'Rib Tips'??
