Last year I got crucified on this board when I suggested Thad was not getting the elite recruits he was bringing in regularly for so many years. Here is the article I wrote that caused the firestorm:http://www.osusilverbullet.com/4/post/2012/05/daves-imo-is-thad-losing-his-recruiting-touch.html
I wonder if some of you are ready to change your minds now. Again, it's not that Thad isn't a good coach or that he is settling for 2-3 star recruits. But Sully is the last elite guy he pulled in (with Thomas just a notch below). The problem is, even though he has some good guys coming the next couple of years, there is still no stud who is a true game changer. And you aren't going to beat Indiana and Michigan State and win B1G titles without those kinds of players.
Say what you will, the rise of Crean and Calipari has made a difference. Less top 10 guys are looking at Ohio State. Now that may all change in a few years but it is present reality...and that is why I said what I did last May. People may have thought this year's team would be in the top 5 (as they were preseason), but I never bought into that. And if Thomas leaves early they will be weaker next year.
Matta has two pretty darn good 14 kids already in the bag, and a nice prospect in Bell at center, and we are in on some other nice kids.
15 in Ohio is loaded, and OSU leads for most of those kids, and we should land 15 top 5 player Mickey Mitchell, so no I do not believe your theory at all.
Rise of Crean, he has not won a Big Ten title yet or made it to an elite yet, some rise.
Calipari is headed to a double digit loss season, and he is more of a national than midwest regional recruiter.
Losing Sullinger was a huge hole not easily replace, he created double teams for more slashing to the lane and open jump shots, plus was a double digit rebounder.
If you go by recruiting stats, Thompson, Ross, Williams and Scott were all HS AA's with a whose who of offers, and Scott and Williams were McDonald's all american's. Lenzelle Smith had some darn solid midwest Big Ten offers.
Sorry, not buying this, go pitch this nonsense to others that will buy it.
North Carolina has a roster full of HS blue chip AA's and is headed to a double digit loss season, and probably another early NCAA exit.
Duke got bounced in the first round last year with HS AA's all over and River's kids, who was a consensus #1/2 player.
Those are two quick easy examples that shoot holes in your thesis.
Matta has more Big Ten titles than anyone during his tenure, and won one with kids like Dials and that group.
Not buying, maybe others will.
The rise of Crean, the guy has never won a Big Ten title as a coach, and never made it to an elite 8 for goodness sakes. Crean had nowhere to go but up with his horrific Big Ten record until this season.

Take off the Scarlet and Gray glasses. None of the guys outside of Thomas was top 20. And none play like it. There are no Oden's, Conley's, Sullly's or even Mullens coming in. Yes, Kentucky is down for one year, but Calipari is bringing in studs. The point is if a kid is torn between OSU and Kentucky, they are choosing Big Blue Nation, which was not the case 4-5 years ago. And we were getting studs out of Indiana for a while, but that has stopped now too. It doesn't mean we are doomed, but facts are facts. And if you aren't a homer on this board you get crucified. I love Thad, and think he is a good coach. But unless he can compete for the best of the best Midwest talent, Ohio State will be what they are this year - good, not great. Check out where next year's guys are rated. They are good players - but not elite. As I said, the last elite guys brought in were Sully and Thomas. And it shows.
Guys - not wanting to get rid of Thad. Love him and he will keep winning 20. All I am saying is that for a few years we were one of the top 4-5 programs in the nation because of talent. But I saw a slide coming and I think we will continue to be a good not great team for the foreseeable future. You can coach guys up but you have to have studs to be the best. True in football and basketball. Again, Kentucky is down after three incredible years, and now dealing with the loss of the top rated player in the class of 2012. But they will be back next year - and they are doing it with one and dones. Not saying I want OSU to follow that path, but the point is, we are not going to get an Anthony Davis out of Chicago if Kentucky wants him. Five years ago we might have got him. Calipari is a rock star recruiter like Urban Meyer, and that hurts a great guy like Thad who is a little more low key.
Congratulations. Somebody give this guy his medal.
The OP has a point.
Fuck B10 titles. I don't settle for those. I want National Titles. You win those by getting NBA Talent. Sully was and so is DT. The current Team is baren of anything at the NBA level. Craft is defensive replacement and nothing more. He won't be logging many miles in the NBA.
Ross , Thompson, Williams and Scott have not been great and none were anywhere in the top 10 or 15 kids in the country. Again you win with NBA top of the draft talent.
Ross isn't getting minutes that he needs to develop. Sorry on a team that can't score, they keep their second best scoring threat on the bench too much.
This team has maybe 1 kid on it that will get drafted and that is DT. Craft is still a iffy pick at best. He is just as likely to go undrafted and find a way to a bench that way.
Again getting top 100 or top 50 kids is nice, but they are depth. You win by getting top 20 or better talent.
You are correct about 14 class and potentially the 13 class but that is a couple years away before things start to improve. This year and next will be down years.
Also, If you are going to point to Duke, then you are going to loose all arguements. Coach K has 4 Titles to go along with many more ACC titles and what not to go along with those early round exits.

I understand what you're saying Hoosier. I would like to see Thad do what Urban is doing. Go after the big fish like the Dukes and North Carolina's of the world. Go battle with them for the number 1 player in the country and number 2 players in the world. I agree he settles for guys that has interest in Ohio State. Go after the guys that has no idea what O State is about and bring those type of players in. Go into other ppls back yard and take there best and not there left overs. That's all
You can't put Crean and Matta in the same sentence. Crean has promised 16 kids they have scholarships to Indiana next year, but can only honor 13 "promises," plus guys who go to the NBA. Last year he cut one player who had been at IU for four years and had red shirted, and sent another to prep school. He signed with Syracuse this year.
No, I was wrong. Here's a sentence which works, "I would rather have Matta than Crean or Calipari regardless of which one wins the next national title."
