He's in a position of authority, she's the subordinate in this situation. No different than a teacher and student. He's the adult/professional and has to act that way when he's in that type of situation. Would everyone feel the same if teachers started clocking students in the face when they get argumentative and physical ? If this were in a bar, or any situation where he wasn't acting in the role of authority, basically off the clock, then maybe i'm ok with retaliation. But in this case, the bus driver has an obligation to his employer, himself, and to his family to act as the bigger man, as an adult.

Then you have this guy and his blog taking the side of the woman...
..."What’s so bothersome, again, is that Mr. Hughes could have avoided this by just letting Shi’dea ride the bus. He could have just elected to take her fare out of whatever overages others generally pay to get on – happens all the time. But nope, he took the stupid route...."
Evidently she didn't have bus fare or the bus driver didn't think she had bus fare.
Notice how he worded this sentence:
"Shi’dea Lane, the 25-year-old woman who was hit square in the face with a right hook by Cleveland RTA Bus Driver Artis Hughes after complaining to him, and then spitting on him and hitting him after Hughes launched a verbal assault on her..."
Again, I don't condone how he clocked her upside the head, but her behavior was way over the line. She's consulting HER lawyer?
If anything, she should have charges pressed against her for assaulting the bus driver.
Like I said before, more than anything, I'm concerned about what kind of message will be sent from however this incident ends – and what kind of precedent will be set.
If there is any justice in this country, this 25-year old woman will receive a fair punishment, the bus driver will be suspended with pay and then this incident blows over.

Edit: Read down the page in the comments:
"In a May posting, Lane wrote that she was trying to get “famous and rich.."
That is correct! She also spit on him too . Situations can be avoided if you choose not to deal with it and allow the law to deal with it. I've learned that lesson the hard way before.
Also did you see how she switched it up after all the crap talking and spitting on and hitting him and talking all that crap, after she got molly wopped she said you going to jail, you going to jail! He probably is going to get fired and if she presses charges it's going to be time and money to defend himself. It's just better to do things the RIGHT way and let the cops handle it and let her look like a loud mouth fool!
