Charles is my favorite basketball analyst on TV. Always tells you what he's thinking, usually provides great, blunt insight into the game, and is as funny as they come. If you want to change the channel cause Charles is on, its your loss. I would quit getting so worked up just because his opinion of the importance of a missed call is different from yours. Truth is that Iowa State was severely outplaying us at the time of the call, and probably deserved the benefit of the doubt at the time.
Having said all of that, I do agree with you that he is over the top on this one; it shouldn't be the focus of the game. Still, I like the fact that he has such strong opinions.
This is my take ...
They space the weekend games out so there are 20-30 minutes between games.
That means they have to sit there in the studio and fill time. They show some nice player and coach features but they also have way too much talking heads time.
Turner only covers this sport for 2 weeks out of the year ... that's it.
So they bring their NBA guys over to help with Barkley and Kenny Smith.
The issue is they don't know ANYTHING about college basketball other than it's played with something that is round and orange. They do no studying, no show prep and it's obvious with the absolutely ignorant things that come out of their mouth.
If they knew anything about the teams, coaches and players, they would spend time breaking down the highlights, the strategy of the games already played and the strategy of the games coming up.
But they have been exposed that they can't do that because they know NOTHING about the teams.
So they start up these nonsensical arguments and talk about things that weren't even factors like the officiating. They think they are creating interest with their contrived arguments and strong statements.
This is a case where they need to hire ESPN to do these studio shows. Bilas, Digger, Hubert Davis, Jalen Rose, etc. would keep the talk on the games and the players and the coaches and the strategy and the next match-up. Turner can't do it.
You are better off not watching the crap they are serving. It is unwatchable.

I agree with them having too much time and not enough to talk about, but I disagree with the concept that they know nothing about college basketball.
Charles is great at watching a game, and telling you what adjustments he would make for each team. This is what he does for the NBA games too. He only needs to watch 10 minutes of a game to understand what everyone on the floor is capable of and how he could use them. So if you asked him to name the players he couldn't (he often can't in the NBA either) but if you listen to him, and sift through the jumble of misspeak and jokes for the basketball knowledge, you learn a lot. That is exactly what I want from my basketball analyst.
And yes, once in a while he is very wrong. But for the most part he is spot on.
That's fine, the guys on ESPN can do that too ... and they know all the guys' names. When you've watched them all year before during and after every game and then have to sit through this, it gives me a headache
I agree with your sentiments. You can't be a hall of famer of a sport without knowing a little something about that particular sport, I don't care at what level it's played. However, Charles does have a tendency to not want to own up to predictions he makes that he winds up being dead wrong about. That part about him is very frustrating but other than that I think he's funny as hell. Just have to take what he says with a grain of salt, like all the other talking heads out there. They're all paid to provide their opinion so there's really no reason to get worked up over it.
I find Greg Anthony to be the most knowledgeable of the college game of all the talking heads on the CBS/TNT college basketball coverage. Gottlieb is good as well but something about him just annoys the hell out of me. Maybe it's his voice, I don't know.

I really enjoy Chuck and Kenny...doing NBA analysis...they have no business doing college...I had a how many times Chuck would say "fantastic" on twitter yesterday...he said it 19 times....not eclipsing his personal high of 24
I hope he chases his bets and losses again by betting against us vs UofA.

Good news is the buckeyes and big 10 have the opportunity to put up or shut up as an actual playoff is in place. (what a novel concept.) Let their play do the talking and if they wind up on top then Charles will have to eat every word. I agree it is unwatchable though to listen as he blows on and on because he won't dare give credit where credit is due.
I really don't care one way or another WHO it is... all I know is that I'd rather be THE University that people love to hate...
People always either love or hate the great programs...
So I love it when announcers "hate" on the Buckeyes... for me it just confirms who we are...
I listen to all those kinds of interviews and LOVE IT!! Bring it on!!
I agree with you guys about the media now acting like we we only won that game because of a bad call not by OSU abilities and drive. I am spitting mad today. All I hear on tv is about the refs and our win and a splash about Aaron's shot. I live here in Cleveland and we have very little sports to be proud of. I love routing for the Buckeyes. They are a great excellent coached team in both football and basketball. Like other cities I want to route for a winner and have respect of the country of our teams abilities. I just wish that people who give commentary would take a moment and refresh their view with a commentary of support and encouragement to the kids and not diminish their accomplishments. It's a game. He has played and refs are part of the game. One team will win and one will lose. both teams played their hardest to represent and continue in the tournament. big 10 or not all these teams deserve their fair share as quality teams trying to enjoy March Madness. It's just makes me crazy. Go Bucks
I could not agree more!
Hereinafter, I will absolutely turn off the TV, or at least the sound, when Barkeley et al are speaking.
Shoot, I just DV you Steve, and meant to give you an up vote! Sorry...
I disagree with those saying Barkley is accomplishing what CBS wants (i.e., getting noticed). I am turning the TV to other channels when that blabbering drunk is on, and I am guessing scores of others are doing the same.
Exactly. I like Chuck. He shouldn't be doing college basketball.
Changed the channel the moment he and Kenny started arguing about their own bullshit rather than the games being played on so many games I lost count.
I've learned on this site that every announcer/sportscaster is out to get Ohio State. They hate Ohio State, because of our clear superiority, and it enrages them to see us succeed. Even former OSU players hate OSU.
I don't like Barkley because he doesn't like the team or conference I root for!
He's not a good "pro guy" either.
Look, everyone needs to chill.. you're ALL getting hooked. The problem is, you're taking him seriously.. and he is not there to be taken seriously. Sure, he'll give some game analysis once in a while. But Charles is basically there to say outrageous things to stir the pot and create a little buzz & controversy for the network. That's his role!
Once you start viewing it through that prism, it's actually quite entertaining. I think it's hilarious to watch himself box himself in on a moronic statement... and rather than admit he was wrong... he grasps for anything he can (no matter how ridiculous it is) to further his point/agenda/cause.
Charles is simply doing his job and doing what they want him to do. I give him credit because he has thick enough skin to take the heat from people who call him out on his outrageous statements/predictions/etc. This doesn't mean I like the guy, doesn't mean I agree with him or anything like that. I used to be in the same boat as you guys and could never understand why it was that he always managed to get me worked up. Until I realized, that's his job! Now I just find it funny
+1. Why wasn't Barkley screaming and crying about that horrible call against Illinois that "cost them the game".. Oh sorry, Illinois is. Big Ten school and he like all SEC inbreds hates. Oh, and if the BIG is so bad, where does that put SEC basketball? I guess below the A10, Mountain West and every other BCS conference for the past decade. Double standards are a BITCH. Too bad Charles, your just a unprofessional, prejudiced hack.
