Coach Meyer was in Denver last night to speak at a Nike Coach's clinic. He then meet with alumni for about 40 minutes afterwards and took questions from the crowd. He did a recap of the 2012 season and talked about how bad we were in the first 4 games and how the coaching staff was looking at 2 straight loses to open the Big Ten season against Michigan State and Nebraska. He also said that many of the seniors were still evaluating the coaching staff at that point. He stated "at 11:22 am in East Lansing, Michigan. we ask the team to "open their hearts" to the coaches and each other. At that point, the evaluating stopped and they came together as a team. I do remember watching the start of that game and seeing a whole different team on the field.
Other topics he touched on were his love and respect for John Simon. Simon would work out 7 days at week at 6:00 am without fail but Urban banned him from the weight room. He told John that him getting bigger and stronger was of little help to the football team because he was already big and strong. Told him he can't come back unless he starts bringing other guys with him. In short order, John Simon is bringing half the defense in with him at 6:00 am. He also talked about Tim Tebow being the only other player he had like John Simon. He said Tebow was so totally invested physically, mentally and emotionally in his team and teammates that he would not let them fail. Being a Buckeye fan does not make me a Tebow fan, but living in Denver did provide the opportunity to see how a guy who can't throw a football 10 yards can take a horrible 1-4 football team on his back and make them winners.
Somebody asked him about who did he see stepping up as leaders in 2013. He mentioned Jack Mewhort first but he loves all 4 of his returning starters on the offense line including Marcus Hall for the doubters out there. He said they are all big, strong, nasty guys that all of us would just love to hang out with. Such a 180 from this time last year. He also had good things to say about Corey Brown, Devin Smith and Evan Spencer as really stepping up and looking like receivers. Somebody asked him about Braxton and about how he was on the cover of Sports illustrated this week, He went to coach speak ..."Oh thats nice, he still has a lot of things to work on." and moved on how Ryan Shazier and Christian Bryant are the 2 guys stepping up be leaders on the defense.
Somebody asked about the recruiting class and he talked about how coaches are like a bunch of 6 year girls on signing day waiting for the fax machine to start and giggling about the players they got. He talked about how the night before that Clark, Wilson and Bell were still up in the air. They felt really good about Clark, pretty good about Wilson and had no clue on Bell. He said his wife even told him he would only get 2 out of 3 and was not getting Vonn Bell which led to a little marital discourse. As the Staff was waiting for Bell to announce, he said he couldn't stand just waiting so he went upstairs to run on the treadmill. He was watching ESPN and they promo'ed Vonn Bell to announce in 5 minutes and he is kicking up the speed on the treadmill and thinking that the SOB did not call me and my wife was right. ESPN cuts to the announcement and he sees Vonn's parents on screen and still nothing. Then his phone rings and it is Vonn saying "you know I am in" and Urban says "No, I didn't" and Vonn says " i got to go but don't tell Coach Withers". Urban hangs up the phone and Coach Withers is standing right next to him "Did we get him?" Urban says "No" and Coach Withers says " BS, I just heard you!"
In was a great event for 100 Buckeye fans to see Coach Meyer in person and see what makes him tick. My impression he is a open, funny, born leader with red hot intensity that burns about 1/4 inch under the surface. But for the best part of whole evening was after he was done speaking, he was brought over and introduced to Randy Gradishar. Gradishar still looks like he could play and is beloved in Denver not only for his play but for what a great person he is. The 2 had never met before and Urban's response was "Oh, wow!" which is the same response that every Buckeye fan would have! Just too cool. Tom Backus from the 1968 National Champs was there as well.
I don't think I shared anything new or earth shattering but seeing Coach Meyer in person only made me more proud to be a Buckeye if that is possible!

Great post and very happy that you got to see Urban. I'm the same age as Urban, so I can relate to his reaction and the thrill of meeting Randy Gradishar, one of my all-time favorites.

Dude....I just gave you your 81st up-vote.....you can write alot of crazy stuff on here and take a big hit on down votes and nobody would know the difference.....great post and insight....I feel the same as you (as well as many others obviously) that Coach Meyer and the whole football staff and program make me proud as well....I have never felt this good about the FB program (even in Tressels hay-day, cuz I hated his offense) in my 40 plus yrs as a fan..........
Great read, thanks.
