Is it just me, or does Craft appear to be slower this year? He just does not look as quick on defense. We already know about his offensive struggles, but this worries me.
I don't think so. I think he has backed off a bit to stay out of foul trouble. He realizes that he needs to stay on the floor to help this team do well. I do like the reckless old Craft though, he was all over the place causing havoc. Go Bucks.
I think he looks slower since Shannon Scott has decided to play craft like this year.
Aaron has to hit the open shots.
I think foul trouble plays a roll in the back of his mind. offensively, he simply is not a second weapon to DT. he's much better as a 4 th option as he was last year to Buford, Sullinger and DT. it's not natural for him to try and score in large quantity AND, I thi k he is a bit more gassed on defense, cause he is trying to do so much more at the offensive end. Think about this kid, he is on "high alert" the entire time he is on the court, whether he is handling the pressure, running the offense, or harassing the man he is guarding. It's a lot more responsibility than last year.

Aaron is good when he has a post presence. Easier to walk the ball up the court and dump it into Sullinger. Now he is being asked to create and he doesn't have the ability to beat guys off the dribble.
Espescially when he goes right 90% of the time..
Of course, some of our experts believed that he is our best pg ever, even when compared to guys like Ransey. He is one of my favorite players but I don't think he is even our best pg on this current team. He plays too many minutes and his fatigue is turning a mediocre shooter into a poor shooter in the second half. Oh yeh... He gets hondo points. I'll take real points.
I keep saying it as unpopular as it is but this is a player that got way too much hype and of which too much is expected. Craft is and has always been a below average offensive player as a whole but he has always been surrounded by such talent that all he had to do was walk the ball up and only try to score if a high percentage shot presented itself.
Now he is asked to carry more of the load which he is not equipped to do.
I personally am of the belief that his defensive prowess is far outweighed by his offensive ineptness. At least on this team, which needs scoring. You win by putting the ball in the basket, and although it helps to have guys who can slow down the production of their opponent, it only helps if that player is at least somewhat productive offensively themselves.
I may be overly critical but I've had how great Craft is shoved down my throat for two years when I didn't see it warranted, and now that's being exposed.
It's sad to see so many Buckeye fans trashing this kid so soon in the year....The kid has played lights out, mostly on D the last 2 years, and most of you are acting like that was a mirage. I am sickened and saddened by these fair weather fans. Shame on you.
I haven't read where anyone was "trashing" Craft. Some have just taken notice of his obvious decline from the past two seasons. As a poster above pointed out, the fact that he's been asked to do more offensively has exposed major chinks in his armor. On this OSU team he's been asked to do more than his ability allows. It's not his fault that outside of Thomas our players can't hit the side of a barn. I can't recall OSU having such inept (at worst) streaky (at best) shooters. The season is still young and I expect the team to get better. I too agree that not having a first round big man to dump the ball into makes his job a tad more difficult. Ultimately, this forces him to produce more offensively which quite frankly just isn't part of Craft's skill set.
Unfortunately, that's what so many Ohio State fans do, especially after a loss. Ohio State fans are so spoiled between football and basketball and sadly don't realize it. If a team or player isn't utopian, then off with their head. We have to realize that not every player is an all-american and not every team will go undefeated. Coaches get what they can get out of them and try to put them in a position to win. We have to live that. You think the complaining is bad now? Wait til we try to navigate this upcoming Big Ten schedule and suffer 6-8 losses. Little inside and suspect perimeter shooting may lead to a rough year on the message boards.
Aaron Craft is still one of my all-time favorites because of HOW he plays the game.
He's playing out of position with Scott on the court. He's a true PG and with Scott out he's moved over to SG.... We basically are playing two of the same players at two positions --- it's really hurt his game.
He's still a stud PG... But we don't need to see him at SG any longer.. He and Scott just don't add enough offense to have them both out there in our backcourt together
Great point Moe. One of the reasons Craft is such a great defender at pg is because he is stronger and more physical than the guy he is guarding. Now he is being forced to guard bigger, stronger more athletic two guards. He is being put in a position to, I don't want to say fail, but be less successful. And part of that is because Scott is better than our wing options. Thad is trying to get his 5 best on the floor. And Scott and Craft are two of those five. At least in Thad's mind.
And for sure it hurts his offense. One, because these bigger stronger guys are guarding him too. And like any coach will say, one of the best ways to control someone on offense, is make them work on defense.
I wonder if he has a girl now? That LOVE thing can make you weak guys!!
I think the fact that he had offseason surgery could have something to do with what we have seen so far out of Craft. I also think he is being asked to play out of position at SG. He is great as a point guard and it is awesome watching him and Scott out there together on the court. But the issue is that we can't play with two point guards, because we don't have enough offense elsewhere on the court. We almost have to run with two of Smith, Thomas or Ross on the court with Scott and Craft, because those are our three best offensive threats. But Ross and Thomas play the same position and Smith comes off to get Scott on. So we don't have a lineup that works well.
Some great players but they don't yet mesh into a cohesive lineup. That will be the challenge for Matta as the year goes on.
