This won't be a popular thread... but that has never bothered me before and this is a serious thread and honest question.
Does anyone seriously think Fickell didn't get his ass chewed this past Sunday as Meyer said he a had a real "serious" talk with some coaches.... we all know it's him and Vrabel, and more to the point and the real question I pose.... Does anyone really think Fickell will be here next year?? I think many of us correctly believe that he was kept on the staff as a token gesture to the OSU family and out of respect for a great Buckeye (which Luke is) BUT that Withers was brought in to cover the fact that this will be a one and done year for Fick. He is not in Withers league and is already off to a shaky (putting it nicely) start calling the plays, something he never did as co-defensive coordinator. (Heacock)
It's clear to me that Luke does not have what it takes to be the man. I'm sorry... but it's way beyond clear. He was pathetic as a play caller last year and so far, has our defense under preforming after two games against inferior talent. For this team to not be able to get pressure on the QB is disgusting with the talent it has! Urban as much said so... this isn't up for dispute. Am I jumping the gun? I don't think so and I believe it will become apparent soon. It won't improve in my opinion and he'll be replaced by Withers, maybe even this year after a big loss to Michigan State or Nebraska. (Although I tend to think Urban will try to give him an honest shot) And I for one will welcome the change. Being a nice guy isn't enough. I love the guy but he is a deer in the headlights as a play caller and it's not even close!!
The only question in my mind? Does he last the whole year? Because next year... he's gone and we all know it. And although it's harsh... we'll be better off.

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.
I think it's way to early to say that Fickell being gone next year is a foregone conclusion. If the defense is still playing overly conservative once we get into the meat of the schedule, and if that defense doesn't work, then that might be the case. The fact as of now is that Fickell's D has forced 5 turnovers and allowed only 13.5 points per game without showing Sparty and other teams any of the blitz packages that he is inevitably going to have to use.
Also, don't forget all of the talk about Withers being a head coaching candidate in the near future. There's no guarantee that he'll be around next year.
I think meyer should chew himself out for the offense. two games and the key board coaches are ready to fire someone? Do you know that there are key members of the D line injured ?
6 turnovers in 2 games.
If anything they put the offense in good positions to score points, you guys should be more worried about the offense which is Meyer's baby ( mind you, I like Meyer) I just hate when people are going to blame a coach or someone on the staff you should complian about both, the offense and the defense, just because you read a couple of articles that said we had the best D line in the country doesn't mean you should hold them to lofty standards, I bet you believe everything in boarding house ( read the disclaimer, they make up most of that stuff) I bet you believed the whole shock the world/ Howard Island B.S and thought we were going to go 12-0 last year and win the title against an SEC team ( us against the world mentality). Forgetting that we had a frosh QB, and a bunch of new starters, with no head coach and a bunch of suspensions.
I believe all this Fickell hate is stemming from last season, If Meyer didn't feel like he deserved the job he would have fired him, simple as that. In the coaching world you don't owe anyone any favors, if he didn't feel he could lead this defense, he would have been gone, you think Fickell begged for his job, well you are wrong.
Did you even watch the presser at all (Bennet is one of the best pass rushers on the team) . Its only two games they know they have alot of stuff to work on and you guys are busy starting who is getting fired threads, damn, give them sometime and take boarding house and other articles with a grain of salt, lower down your expectations some of those guys haven't even had 2 full years of experience and are coming back from injury. Its a dead horse stop beating it by the way you could be more positive about this team without being called a homer, we are fans aren't homers what we are supposed to be ?
I am just hoping they start gelling by MSU, thats 4 games , please stop expecting everything to be freaking perfect. worry about how we don't have a running game apart from Miller, he is not going to be an effective passer till next year or his senior season no matter how much of a genius Herman is, or else he would be able to throw a deep ball by now.
Honestly there needs to be a voice of reason on this board, talking about someone not having his job or he is not up to the job after 2 games is absurd. Then when they make changes the response will be, ( Ohh Meyer had to chew his ass for him to be more aggressive)
Its 2 games, they are not going to be perfect no matter what you expected.

Too logical, too obvious, too simple, therefore unacceptable to this board...
you can't be serious.
Michael Jackson is white and Rosie O'Donnell is fat. Yada, yada, yada.
Lets put it this way....when teams start hanging 30 on us...hes gone.....as of now Id say his Job is safe.....6 turnovers in 2 games is pretty good.....They definatly need to pressure the Qb more.....If that doesnt get corrected.....or if Urb is not satisfied with the defense....Fick will be gone...or he will get his playcalling duties taken away.....Im pulling for Fick....but my gut feeling tells me hes history. Urban will not screw around and keep him here if hes not capable of doing the job.....Cmon Fick.....the conservative stuff has a time and place....but not every down through 2 games...
I thought it was reported the talk was with Fick and Withers, not Vrabel?
All of this bashing and nobody mentions that we have really 3 new coaches on a defensive staff, new d-line, CB, and Safety coach. We have changed our type of coverage that we play. What it comes down to is the D-Line has to beat the people in front of them.
In 2002, when our defense was stellar were we a blitz heavy team. No, not saying we didn't blitz now and then but Darion Scott, Tim Anderson, Kenny Peterson, and Will Smith beat the guys in front of them. Our lineman need to do the same thing.
The defense is a work in progress. Again we are giving up 13 points per game, with six turnovers. We'll be fine!
Totally agree. The defense is "sand bagging". Focus on fundamentals during the first few games before "unleashing the hounds".
The entire coaching community thinks Fickell is an exceptional coach. To state otherwise is ignorant.
People need to understand what the defensive concepts were the past two games. The defense was set to have the front four get pressure and have the rest in coverage and have linebackers available to cover the quick routes. If they were not playing this scheme the interception tally would be closer to 1 instead of 5.
Unfortunately, the dline hasn't gotten the pressure they expected to get out of them so things will be adjusted. We also need to come to grasp that maybe the dline isn't as good as expected or they haven't reached their potential. Plus the linebackers are all relatively new starters. Shazier showed promise last year in his few games. But again, young guys, new coaches, new coverages.....be somewhat patient. I know we are the Buckeyes and we expect perfection all the time, but reality is this team still needs some work.
I agree, the OSU brass wanted Meyer (i.e., needed) Meyer so bad he could have fired Brutus Buckeye and gotten away with it. He kept Fickell because he thought he could do the job. Withers was simply too could a coach for Meyer to pass up especially given Luke inexperience as DC. With that said I am disappointed that the defense does not seem to attack the ball but rather read and react. Yes, Bennett has been hurt but Washington has stepped up nicely and Spence and Miller have played reasonably well. I think it is the conservative schemes, which then exposes the secondary.
Vrabel's guys can only execute what Fick calls. Its not his fault he is only rushing three guys. Withers is just as likely if not more to be gone before Fickell cause he is destined to be a HC soon. As for Fickell, I'll giv him the benefit of the doubt hes holding back but Sept. 29 will loom large in E. lansing for his future. Inexperienced QB and WR's, run irst oriented team, then maybe this thread will be more appropriate.
Offense always lags behind defense when it comes to learning a new system which is why our offense looks anemic at times. Anyone who knows football knows this. Now, I like Fick and I personally feel that he is a good coordinator who will be great with every gaining day. This is his first year as a play caller and he is just starting to get his feet wet with being the man. i do want to see more pressure and better tackling. It's not like we have completely changed our defensive schemes. It's almost exactly the same as last year with a few new wrinkles thrown in. I feel that this defense has underperformed so far but we shall see in three weeks when we take that trip to E. Lansing. We will be challenged in stopping the run.
Before they annoint Withers it may be in OSU interest to improve on pass coverage. To my knowledge Withers main responsibility is pass defense. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure a few blown pass defense assignments occurred Saturday. Honestly is it a big deal? no it is easily to correctable and a work in progress, that said I don't understand his credibility as a DC. If you compare Withers results at North Carolina compared to the 2002-2011 OSU results he is not qualified.
Speaking of work in progress I find it interesting that little criticism has gone Meyers-Herman direction yet. Lets face it if Braxton wasn't a once in a lifetime runner, where would this offense be?. The fact is running Braxton 27 times is not to smart, the objective is to win games. Maybe Urban is into style points, you know run the score up at any cost, which would validate Braxton still running the ball late in the 4th quarter with OSU safely in the lead.
Too many offensive mistakes to allow Urban a free pass. particularly when Fickell is getting criticism for opposing offenses average 13 points a game.
