I have two things to add to the subject and I was wondering what you all think. First Urban stated that his type of defense is aggressive and thats the type of Defense we are going to play. In an interview on Bucknuts before the season Coach Fick stated roughly the same thing. Is it just me or are we playing very non agressive defense with a very weak soft zone in the first couple of weeks? We are just reacting and not being aggressive. I watched most of that Alabama vs Michigan game and Alabama was bringing people all the time and were playing tight man coverage and cover 2. They reminded me of the old days when Antoine Winfield was here. We always played aggressive and got after people. Whats the deal is it bad coaching/lack of adjustments or is the trust not here yet with our players. I for one could argue that our 2 starting corners could be the best duo we have had in quite some time and they both have experience. The other question I have is about John Simon. When Simon got here he became a star because of his crazy work ethic and his ability push guards around and or run past them to blow junk up in the backfield all the time. This was all done when he was playing DT. Now they have him playing at DE and I feel that he is not as much of a threat out there. He cant overpower OTs as easy and he is not fast enough to get around the end on a consistant basis. I think they need to move Simon back inside with Big Hank and bring Spence in as the starter at DE. We need to bring the pain every play. We should dictate what the other team is doing with pressure from everywhere. Sitting back and playing bend but dont break has not helped us. If a MAC team and traditional running team can pick us apart what is going to happen when we play a good team.
I dont know what Simon you were watching but he didn't spend the kind of time at DT you are suggesting above, nor did he have as big an impact.
Last year was by far his best season and it was entirely from DE.
I'm not saying he is playing the right spot at WDE right now, just pointing out that I dont really know what you are talking about when you say he became a star blowing up guards as a DT.
Yes, Roby and Howard have the talent to play press. But what about the rest of the guys? The defense have been facing mostly 3 and 4 receiver sets. They either all play man or its a zone. Cover 2 would be good in a 2 receiver set and maybe a 3, if we are in nickel. But that is asking a lot if the dline can't get pressure.
I think we're missing the main point here. Fickell was kept largely because of his recruiting prowess and connections. He is a true Buckeye and has great connections with Ohio HS coaches, as well as those in other states, PA in particular. Meyer obviously saw this and "researched" this as he likes to say. Vrabel got his spot through a combination of Meyer first observing him as a RECRUITER (notice a trend here) and on Belichick's recommendation. I think Meyer loves them both as recruiters and as true Buckeyes, but as is being debated here, their on-field position coaching results over the past couple of years has left them both open to this criticism and debate. Combine that with what was allegedly seen on the sidelines on Saturday and by Meyer's own comments, although not directed specifically at both of them, and we have the makings of this thread. Heaven forbid if they have another Nebraska like meltdown this season, as this will quickly morph into another Bollman like massacre.
I will reserve any judgements until after I have seen additional games. D-line was frustrating to watch this past week but actually the defense was pretty effective except for a couple of poor coverages by the Secondary. I am not a big believer in the thought that they are holding back not to show too much, but maybe that is partly true, who knows. I do know that if I was a D-coordinator, I would be hesitant calling many blitzes when my backs seem to get mixed up on their coverages quite often. We haven't see the finished product yet on defense or offense.
They had a long camp to work on the finished product, IMO. And when they say they're going bring heat and don't, I have to wonder. Who were these teams we were playing against? Not exactly the SEC or even the Big Ten! All I'm saying is that after 2 games... I'm worried. Fickel looks the same to me as he did all last year. I hope I'm wrong and like I said, I like they guy. But after 15 games of him calling plays and making personal decisions... I don't think he's headed in the right direction.
You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.
I agree with you Star for the most part, Luke has a lot less responsibility than he did last season and he's getting paid a lot of money now! IT's put up or shut up time for him! I don't think Jim Heacock ever really got enough credit for the job he did! Luke needs to start putting his players in the right position to succeed. Playing Hankins on the edge is fucking ridiculous! Adlophus and Schutt are having as big an impact right now as the upper classman and you have to wonder why, it's because the staff isn't making adjustments! Meyer is going to be all over Fickell's shit if he doesn't get results! JMO! We have outstanding corner's it's time to pressure the qb. I can't believe we aren't seeing Steve Miller and Noah Spence more!
"Playing Hankins on the edge is fucking ridiculous!"
Couldn't agree more and this is exactly the kind of crap I'm talking about!! It isn't starting Bauserman over Miller... but it sure is STUPID!
Coach Meyer has said that he didn't feel at the end of camp that they were where they needed to be. Coombs and Withers coach corners and safeties, so why are the coverage mix ups on Fickell?
We are talking about 2 games here....games where a combined 26 points have been scored. No, the defense hasn't played great, but they haven't been horrible either. These are new defensive coaches coaching together, lets give them sometime before we start wanting them fired. For whatever reason, the coaches game planned to get pressure with the dline, that isn't working. Meyer discussed adjustments being made on Monday, so lets see what happens against Cal.
That's just my opinion and you have yours.
Meyer was also involved in the decision to play Hankins outside. It was brought up at the press conference.
We've played 20% of the season already against the worst teams of the schedule. When can I start to evaluate him?
Too logical, too obvious, too simple, therefore unacceptable to this board...
Haha..... you seem a bit fired up over simple conversation. UCF is a better team than they get credit for. Good chance they end up in the top 25 by seasons end.
You can evaluate all you want. I'm just choosing to wait to pass judgement until a little later in the season. They way i see it so far ; they played a Miami team that continually used a spread offense with a quick pass. Getting to the qb would be a huge task. They tried to get pressure using the front four against UCF and did not have success. All in all they still caused 6 turnovers and average 13 points allowed a game. Nothing to make me nervous yet, especially if they fix pressure issues and coverage mix ups.
Coaching up players is way different than actually calling defensive plays.
