"Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford told the AJC. “I think Trey is still going to Ohio State, but he’s being respectful to Coach Roof and he’s going to listen to what he has to say.”"
Georgia Tech makes run at Ohio State LB commit
Posted: 2:16 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013
Georgia Tech is taking a shot at Trey Johnson, the Under Armour All-America linebacker who is committed to Ohio State.
It has to do with Ted Roof, the new defensive coordinator at Georgia. When Roof was at Auburn two years ago, he was the first to offer a football scholarship to Johnson.
Roof and Johnson also have the connection in that each starred at linebacker for Central Gwinnett High School.
“Trey said that Coach Roof is supposed to be coming by on (Thursday),” Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford told the AJC. “I think Trey is still going to Ohio State, but he’s being respectful to Coach Roof and he’s going to listen to what he has to say.”
It would be a long shot for Georgia Tech to land Johnson, but anything can and does happen in recruiting.
One school that is out of the picture is Auburn. Johnson de-committed from Auburn last month after the Tigers changed defensive coordinators for the third time in three seasons while Johnson had been pledged there.
“Auburn came by last Friday, and they gave their pitch with the new defensive coordinator, Ellis Johnson,” Wofford said. “Trey pretty much told them that he has been down this road before with Auburn. He handled it in a very, very mature way. I was proud of him. I’ve never seen an 18-year-old kid handle himself so well in a room full of adults in that type of situation.
“He said, ‘You know, I put my trust into Coach Roof two years ago. He left, and I built my trust back up with Coach Chizik and Coach VanGorder. Then they left.’ That really shook up Trey. He said ‘It’s not disrespect toward you all, but I’ve been in this room with a different staff before and have them tell me that they’re going to be with me my whole career. It’s the same school, so I’m just not going back down that road.’”
To Auburn’s credit, the Tigers haven’t quit: Gus Malzahn tried to call Johnson over the weekend.
South Carolina and Tennessee have made inquiries about Johnson but “his dad has pretty much shut everybody else down,” Wofford said.
Georgia Tech will likely be the only other school to get in front of Johnson before signing day.
“But again, Coach Roof was the first guy to offer him,” Wofford said. “They are always going to be friends beyond football.”

The day Georgia Tech flips one of our best recruits is the day Urban recruits me to play LB.

At his announcement, his parents were present and seemed happy with his choice. You may have seen some of the announcements where the parents cringe. He will still be home and distance is always a factor in some sense.
