Let me start by saying this is the first game I have been able to watch the Bucks play this year against a Top 20 opponent.
The Good: A lot of the mistakes made in the today's game can be fixed. The biggest problem I saw today that made me mad was EFFORT. There was none on the defensive end. Guys were standing around just watching Illinois drive the lane and get easy baskets. The other thing that I saw that can be fixed is shoot selection. Shannon Scott needs to be starting. I like what I am seeing out of him. This kid has a High basketball IQ. He plays hard on both end of the floor. He keeps his head up and looks to make the extra pass.
The Bad: OUR Front Court Players. Some of this is player development, and some of this recruiting. Matta went after highly touted recruits and miss out on them and it's coming back to bite us because he didn't have a plan B. I could see why he would recruit a player like Amir Williams out of High school, but this kid is not getting better. We don't have a Low Post Presence and we will continue to struggle with teams that long/lengthy defenders. Our best Post player is 6'7" barely. You can't win national championship shooting 3's all the time. All it takes is for you to have 1 bad shooting night in the tournament and your season is over. There is 2 players in basketball that need to have a Alpha male personality. One is your Point Guard and one is your Center. You point guard has to be able to go out there and get everyone settled down when your opponent is making a run, and also get the team in the right play or right set to get a bucket when you have to have one. We don't have that. Which is another reason why Scott needs to play. Guys are coming down the court shooting 3's and taking to many bad shots. I can count on 1 hand how many times I saw this team run set plays. This is D1 Basketball, not a pick up game in the park. Center has to set the tone in the paint. Defend the rim and attack the glass. I saw Amir Williams jump rebound a couple of times. If you are 6'11" as soon as the ball comes off the rim I should see your hand in the air, arms fully extended. Amir is standing there flat footed. That's lack of coaching.
The Ugly: Our Upper Classmen. DT is effort on defense is pathetic. As a junior I expect him to set the tone. Once the team transitions to offense he somehow gets his second wind hustles down the floor. Can't have that. I don't care if he is your leading scorer. Bobby Knight, John Thomas, Dean Smith, and Coach K would not tolerate that kind of behavior out of any player. Smith Jr, is a mess. This kid continues to take bad shots. If he was a true freshman I might understand, but his mistakes are unacceptable. He is a 2 guard who can't handle the ball worth a damn. He needs to set. I would start Shannon Scott and Aaron Craft in the back court from here on out.
Matta has some decisions to make going forward. He needs to recruit better front court players. Sully was able to mask our weakness for the last two years due to the fact he was strong as a ox and he had great lower body strength. However there is a reason we lost to Kentucky when he was freshman, and there is a reason why we keep losing to team like Kansas. Amir Williams has no lower body strength, no upper body strength, and absolutely no situational awareness on the court. Guys it's going to be a long year, if our defensive efforts to get better.
They played like they had cement shoes. Illinois was getting loose balls and out hustling the Bucks.
Craft is the most overrated player ever.....guy does nothing to help the team on offense shoots bad, can't set guys up on a consistent basis, can't run the fast break good, misses at least 3 lay-ups a game......Amir is soft as marshmallows and teams know it.....Sam can't shoot and Ross is terrible also......no one on this team has improved but Scott a little bit and that's Matta's fault
like i said. player development. Dave hinted on this on FRR this week. Ross is going to get better. If you ranked the team on raw talent alone, Ross would be up there. If I had to pick a dream team, I would want a guard like craft. Yeah he doesn't shoot well, but he can lock down 8 out of 10 defenders he goes up against. He doesn't have the explosion to be a true 1, but what he brings on the defensive side of the ball is intangible.

Posters reading this thread that are contemplating replying, be warned: you can not, under any circumstances, even hint at Thad being remotely responsible for any loss versus any opponent at any time. His game plans and ability to get the team fired up works each and every time and are never to be questioned. His recruiting has zero to do with the current roster either in case you were foolishly considering posting this absurd notion.
Very good assessment of the BB season so far... shooting is bad, defense is worse and free throw shooting is scary.
