4 games into this season and they have already surpassed their win total from last year. IMPROVEMENT!!!
They haven't started off this fast since 2008 when they opened the season with wins over northern illinois, bowling green, montana state, and Florida Atlantic only to finish 7-6 while getting tea bagged in the bowl game against Kansas. They might have 2=3 more wins on that schedule this season. But then again they might totally collapse. I doubt the later. They are actually playing well.
I don't like their QB, Marquis Grey. Watched him play against UNLV and Western Michigan. Far too inconsistant in the passing game. Sure he is a good athlete but when you have a guy playing QB who can't deliver an on time pass on target but is a good athlete, you might as well be running the single wing. Athletic guys who can't throw the football (cough Robinson cough) should not be playing QB. Its not fair to the WRs you recruited who have to rely on this guy to do his part in the offense. Derrick Wells is a guy who stands out to me on their defense. To quote an old cliche he always seems to be around the ball making plays. Just in this case the cliche is true. Good football player.
Good news is they have a serviceable replacement for Grey in red shirt freshman Shortell who isn't the athlete Grey is but he can throw a pass. The defense looks good. They may not have the talent of Ohio State but they aren't losing to teams they should beat unlike other ball clubs. Gotta tip your hat to these guys. They won't win the big ten and probably will lose to all the top conference teams but I don't think they are the cellar dweller this season. That and they aquitted themselves well in OOC. I must say I am suprised.
"The only thing That Team Up North will be tasting this year is the salty tears of defeat" - UFM
they beat a pretty decent Syracuse team.
Overall, I don't think the big ten is as bad as everyone is saying.
Teams like Minny, NW, and purdue, which are definitely not the best teams in the big ten, have shown they are competitive against good competition.
I think Iowa will be back too if they don't fire KF. He's got a more "usual" class coming in next year (bunch of 3 stars) and they should actually get some RB's healthy.
The core of the big ten will be much better in the next few years. IMHO
Coach Kill is the perfect fit for the job. I am a high-school coach here in MN and have met him several times. The thing Kill is great at is he know exactly what he wants for his system and he is really good at identifying lower rated players who fit what he wants to do and developing them. He is currently recruiting one of our DE's. I am betting the Goph's can win 3 or 4 BIG games this year as well.
I am calling it right now. Minny beats Michigan. I think the Minny defense will be the difference. UNLV beat AF by 3. Minny beat UNLV at UNLV...IMO Minny has improved since then.
Couldn't agree more! I am actually from Minny so I always am pulling for them unless they are playing the bucks...
In a year in which it is hard to take pride in the rest of the BIG 10, it is nice to seem them back to being a quality football team. They will not be making a NC run anytime soon but they at least look they belong in the B1G.
Will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out!
I miss my Kate Upton Picture
I would love for you to be right, just don't see that one happening..
I'm from Minnesota too, TCF is two blocks from my house, and its awesome to see the Gophers put together a decent team out on the field. Kill is the perfect guy for the job, and complete 180 from the joke Brewster was. They won't win the BIG 10 but definitely have a chance to win more of their trophy games and get back to a bowl where their program should be. Called them being a lot better than people gave them credit for before the season, glad to see they're proving everyone wrong.
I think Michigan will look past Minny. Its a road game for the scummers. If Minny doesn't win it will be damn close.
