A bunch of us have been talking about this on Twitter this morning. With the rumors that these 3 kids could be moved down to the DL talk about the depth and the bodies down there.
DE Noah Spence 5 Star
DE Adolphus Washington 5 Star
DE Steve Miller 5 Star
DE Se'von Pittman 4 Star
DE/DT Michael Bennett 4 Star
DE Joey Bosa 5 Star
DE JT Moore 3 Star
DE Jamal Marcus (Moved from Backer)
DE Curtis Grant (Moved from Backer)
DE Josh Perry (Moved from Backer)
DE/OLB Tyquan Lewis 4 Star
DE Tracy Sprinkle 3 Star
DT Tommy Schutt 4 Star
DT Joel Hale 4 Star
DT Chris Carter 3 Star former OL
DT Michael Hill 4 Star
DT Billy Price 4 Star
DT Big Hank (Potential top 10 pick if he comes back)
If the 3 Backers move down that will make 17 DL. Talk about a log jam of talent. You are talking a team that goes 4 deep on the DL with 4 and 5 star DL.
There is no way Vrabel can go the next 2 years without rotating bodies in and out like Meyer did at Florida.

If those 3 move, we'll have even less depth and experience at LB.
The CHASE is on...
I hope they all don't move. I don't want Marcus to move to DE. Perry might just naturally out grow the spot. If they move these guys, you better give JT Moore a shot at MLB.
If those three do move down to DE, I imagine you'll see some DE move down to DT. Diesel and Bennett both spent some time at the three technique this year, so I would think they might put on some more weight and play there permanently.
No doubt about having to rotate with that much talent....we saw more of it as the year went on and I expect more as the young ones "get it."
I expect to see several of those names transfer before 2013 though, with the following coming to mind -
and Curtis Grant
Hopefully Coach Meyer will tell Vrabel he is going to rotate guys next year. With recruiting the kind of DL Coach is recruiting they have to see they can get on the field even if they don't start.
Its not good news. We need linebackers and not more ends. Them moving to the line suggests to me that they aren't "getting it" at linebacker.
I'm sensing some impending transfers soon. Just a guess.

Perry to DE? This is very surprising to me. I can't see this happening...not this soon.
If that happens...maybe they are thinking this:
Spence, Washington, Miller, Bennett are the 4 man rotation at DE for the next two seasons (thinking that maybe the 3 freshmen go out early). Then that gives the remaining 7 the chance to develop into the next group of four for 3 years down the road with a possible redshirt for one or two of them if the staff thinks it would add longevity to the quality depth of veteran DEs.
The DT situation is as it probably needs to be with 6 of them.
I don't know, just trying to figure out what the staff's thought process would be with having that many guys at DE. The only other thing I can think of is if they flat out don't think those guys can play LB at a National Chamionship level and so they are clearing the way for the next wave of LB recruits to get as many reps as possible. Maybe they think the ship has sailed for those three at LB????

Or... they don't fit what the defense wants it's LB's to play like in the future defenses.
I really think Grant's light will go off and settle into the MLB position. Perry is a true freshman and looked pretty good plus he has great size/speed. Shazier will be the leader out there and that will help these young guys out. It took Shazier a year and 1/2 to "get it" and he's a stud. So with the coaches getting more comfortable with each other and the players now knowing what the coaches expect from them, I actually feel pretty good about the future linebacker position. Additionally, the schedule and the second year offense with Braxton, I think there should be a few games that will allow many young guys to play and develop. At the end to the day, a ton of talent and depth....should be a fun ride.
Think about this Tracy Sprinkle may come in and tear it up.
At this point there is no need for Munger.
I think Bosa is going to grow into a DT.
You almost have to think Diesel stays at Strong Side end. He beat the hell out of Taylor Lewan from Michigan as a Freshman and Lewan is projected as a top 15 pick in the draft.
Worst case, we still have a Boron on the team who could play somewhere on the defense.
Incredible. Agree 100% Vrable needs to rotate players and the weaker schedule gives that flexibility. I just hope he isn't locked into that best players paradigm I think he has. I also prefer individual substitution than wholesale team substitution. Always like to see one 2 deep guy with 3 starters in a rotation. Let all the subs get playing time with the 1st team. Would build incredible team spirit and experience without jeprodising the win column that much. It would be a chain saw front four.
I don't want to see them all move. I'd love to see Perry become a Donta "Zeuss" Hightower type. He dominated at MLB for Alabama at 6'4" 260. Perry looks to me to have that kind of athleticism. If you can maintain your speed and agility with that size, what's the downside? I don't really want to see Marcus moved either, and I hope the light comes on for Grant at LB'er, we need bodies there. Having super sized athletic linebackers seems all good. More versatility, less need to substitute.
I see what you did there.
