Insanity. Mich.blogger shows fans why there's no reason to worry

  • ((You really need to read this whole blog, but you have to do it slowly~because he'll twist your mind like a pretzel with his logic.

What's fun about this read, is that this really is supposed to be an attempt to show michigan fans why there's no reason to worry.
Even recruiting won't suffer, because michigan will just run a different offense so they can recruit players that don't fit Urban's system.
Lastly, he actually wants you to speculate with him how Urban's record is not that impressive "if we take all the late Tebow-inspired wins, and give Florida losses in those games". His point? Florida doesn't win a nat'l title if we do that.))

    The Urban Meyer Effect
    Monday, November 28, 2011

In one of the most unsurprising moves of the season, Ohio State has opted to replace Luke Fickell as head coach following a 6-6 season ending in a loss to Michigan. Most speculated this move would happen (our speculation: here), but the "Chosen One" to replace Fickell and the infamous Jim Tressel was unknown until recently when several blogs and ESPN began reporting Urban Meyer had been selected for this position.

Just as unsurprising as this coaching move was to the nation, Michigan fans have been mixed on having Meyer as the next "Ohio" head football coach. Should fans fear, be satisfied, or celebrate this announcement? Certainly everyone is open to their own opinion, but I think fans need to take a step back to consider the implications of this announcement.

    ► Reasons To Fear:

Urban Meyer has clearly been one of the best and hottest coaches in the nation. When Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez fans were told we would be getting the hottest coach in the nation with fresh ideas. Saying Urban Meyer is as "hot" of a hire as Rodriguez was to Michigan would be a vast understatement.

In Urban Meyer's 3 head coaching positions, he has a career record of 104-23, meaning he has won approximately 81% of his games. When Rich Rod was hired by Michigan, he had won short of 70% of his career games. Along with this, Urban Meyer has 4 conference championships, including 2 in the ultra-competitive SEC.

However, the most impressive aspects of Meyer's career are his 2 national championship titles in 2006 and 2008 and his Fiesta and Sugar Bowl victories in 2004 and 2009. When Rich Rod was hired by Michigan he had made just 2 BCS bowls to Meyer's 4 BCS trips (Rich Rod won the Sugar Bowl and had left before the Fiesta Bowl was played, but West Virginia did win).

Essentially, imagine all of Rich Rod's impressive records on steroids accompanied by a connection to the school, which was one of the major factors in Rich Rod's eventual collapse. Imagine if Rich Rod had been even more successful and also had once coached at Michigan. Sort of a weird Frankenstein Hoke/Rich Rod combo. Too far? Maybe, but you get the point.

He's an extremely competent coach with ties to Ohio State that will satisfy the fan base. His ties to Ohio and Florida may also prove to be deadly recruiting tools that could give Ohio State an advantage over the rest of the Big Ten.

    ► Reasons To Be Satisfied:

The odd-ball years of "The Game" are likely over. With Michigan's emergence this season and victory over the Buckeyes accompanied by Meyer's presence in Columbus, it's hard to imagine any type of long-term streak starting either way. I could easily see Michigan winning next season as Meyer attempts to solidify his team against an experienced Michigan squad, but 4 or 5 year spans with no victory for either team are highly unlikely.

Michigan and Ohio State fans will have some great games to look forward to over the next few seasons and perhaps even a return to the Big Ten formerly known as "Michigan, Ohio State, and everybody else."

    ► Reasons To Celebrate:

Meyer's record is very impressive, but there should still be some lingering questions to his record. For instance, he may have achieved success everywhere he has gone, but he still has not shown he can maintain that success long-term. With expectations sky-high in Columbus, dropping off to 7 or 8 wins isn't going to be acceptable, even if he has a good year.

If we glance at his Florida coaching tenure, the longest in his career, his 6 seasons were up and down. Now, the first thing you should be thinking is that 6 years is a pretty long time. I agree, in most situations, I think this would be pretty solid proof. However, there is one factor many people are forgetting and that is a person named Tim Tebow.

I admit I can't count Tim Tebow against Urban Meyer, but I think it would be interesting if we analyzed the effect he had on the Gators' squad. As we now know, or are at least starting to learn, Tebow is magic in winning games, especially at the end. So what I did was switch every Florida win by fewer than 7 points as a loss.

Meyer's record over those 4 seasons would drop from 48-7 to 42-10. This may seem pretty small, but the change in the 2006 season is key. Instead of winning a national championship, losing the close game to Tennessee would block Florida from winning the SEC East and going to the SEC Championship Game and giving them no bid to the title game. Some may say Tebow wasn't the starting quarterback on the team, but Tebow converted a critical 4th down in the game against Tennessee that ultimately allowed Florida to win the national championship. As I said, this is highly speculative, but I think it's important to point out that both of his national championships occurred on a Tebow-lead team.

Another thing to celebrate is the fact that Meyer's offense will largely recruit different players than Michigan. This means that even though many think Meyer will "lock-down" Ohio recruits, it's pretty unlikely because Hoke and Borges use a different system than Meyer, attracting different players. There will still be some recruiting battles, but I don't anticipate the drop-off many assume is going to occur with Meyer at Ohio State. Heck, Meyer was heard stating that Mattison was his best recruiter at Florida anyway.

However, the best reason to celebrate Meyer's hiring is the fact that he is coming into a complete mess in Columbus. The Buckeyes are looking to Meyer as the savior to their problems, but things such as stiff NCAA penalties, a vital senior class, and the fact that Michigan has been beating Ohio State in recruiting all year. Meyer is certainly a solid coach, but he has some big obstacles to overcome against an opponent that is already having some success.

    ► The Bottom Line:

Meyer will certainly bring some new-life into the rivalry (although his press conference was absolutely horrid). Since the 2008 game in Columbus, there has been at least 1 coach on the hot seat in "The Game" and I'm excited to have two legitimate programs, coaches, and teams facing off come November.

  • i'm sure they didn't fear tressel when he was hired. they should fear meyer because he's one of the best recruiters of all time and will not only erect a fence around ohio but it will be a fence with armed guards and barbed wire. And we all know that is the real lifeblood of michigan football. they are kidding themselves because the other alternative is to admit that they are screwed.

True. M only prospers when it recruits OH well (see Bo era, see Cooper era). When JT built the fence Lloyd could see the pipeline drying up and retired. RichRod was dumb enough to think he could scheme around it. Wrong.

It's been a real twist for them.

They were on top of the world for what... one day? Only to have Ohio State take over the airwaves again on Monday with this hire.
You're right. They have to pretend it's no big deal.
This guys blog was a perfect example of their efforts :-)

You keep chasing kids tweets around the clock as an adult, not me. Tell me who has issues. Keep chasing tweets and twitter accounts of OSU players and receuits, that sounds like someone on stable ground.
PS, did not refer to you do not give yourself that much credit, I spend a lot of time in Detroit and that is all you hear right now from their media and many UofM fans, it is called denial.

    Oh, I see.
Somehow to you, I'm sure that made sense.

If you don't see the value of following tweets, that's a source you disregard.

  • So he's essentially saying "Don't worry. If you drink enough Tequila, drop enough acid and hold your eyes just right Rosanne Barr looks just like Bar Rafaeli."

    I'm not buying.

  • The reason Michigan is such a discusting program is they can't even win unless they Get Ohio players.. They are terrified of Ohio talent being locked down because they know that is their life line pulling good players from Ohio

  • I'm confused as to how one goes from 48-7 to 42-10 when changing all wins under 7 points to losses? Is that imaginary math or did I miss something?

  • Guys the thing you are forgetting is that they have Brady Hoke!! I look at his resume and I can't sleep at night. And most importantly...he's a Michigan man. Meyer should just go back into retirement.

    I am sorry Flabuckeye1.

I just go around and find stuff that I think might be interesting to some. I know everyone won't find each post relevant, but I figure they'll just skate on by if it isn't to their liking.
Unfortunately, some take the time to say "why waste my time" or the equivalent.

I saw that too. I suppose we can chalk that up to them being the self-proclaimed "Harvard of the Midwest." (I just never knew them Harvard fellers couldn't count.)
