Well, how would you feel about a team who won its conference title and then got bounced in round 1 of the tourney? Round 2? Round 3?
Perhaps you are both right. Tournament is a new season. The other season ends with the conference tourney. Maybe if you think of it like that then it might make sense because winning the conference is a big deal. But the march title tournament is also important and nobody really gives a crap who won their conference when they get bounced out. Final four is a hell of an accomplishment but you are right. It doesn't mean jack if you don't win it all. You don't get a trophy for being a semi finalist.
Tough question. I think its an apples and oranges argument in my opinion.

Final 4, but that doesn't diminish the value of conference championships. Final 4's are just so hard to get to. Matta has had 2 in his time here, which is an impressive accomplishment.
Conference titles keep coaches jobs. A team can get hot and make the final 4, you need an entire season of play to win your conference.
That's what you see with these long tenured coaches at big time programs, conference titles and nice runs in the NCAA tourney.
