I know, I know... The entire season could've shaken out much differently were we not on probation... But we are, and we're undefeated... And for the life of me, why again didn't we self-impose a bowl ban last year? Our team was poorly coached, we were enduring a horrible season on but more importantly off the field... And if ur season in general would be considered a failure (putting that lightly) whether we won a mediocre bowl or not, why wouldn't we just chalk the season up as one to forget and start over with one of the greatest college football coaches (ever???) inbound? Even if we were somewhat misled about the possibility of the NCAA banning us, why didn't we just do it? Imagine the hype/hysteria that would be surrounding us now... Gene Smith: dead man walking
the guy does horrible pressers....................other than that, he got the NCAA (because he is connected) to hurry the decision so we could move on - we were going to get a 2 yr BB if we didnt levy a one year, so enough of that BS - he reached out to UFM, made the deal. Gene FS is the reason why we are going to be on top again soon - any other coach would have not got the job done. Then throw in the other sports he manages well - great BB team, both men and womans, and the other shit - charity - family.
Do I think he is an ass at times that doesnt tell the whole story - yes. But when you are in charge of a business the size of the US, we all are on a need to know basis, and I for one am sick of the GS threads FUCK
Must be easy playing another man's hand without having seen his cards. At what point last season do you think Smith should have self-imposed a bowl ban? Do recall that last year's team was stacked and senior-laden heading into the season, and many fans and analyst pegged us for the national championship game. Columbus would have exploded had Gene Smith imposed a post-season ban before the season kicked off. Once we lost a few games, some believe that the NCAA would have imposed a 2012 post- season ban regardless whether Smith self-imposed in 2011.
Gene Smith chaired the NCAA Infractions Committee so he likely had inside information, however wrong it turned out to be, to believe that a bowl ban was off the table; in addition to paying other NCAA 'experts' to guide tOSU throughout the process and to lobby the NCAA on its behalf. tOSU self-reported the violation and was forthcoming with information during the investigation. Once full information was revealed regarding Tressel's prior knowledge and subsequent cover-up of the violations, Smith fired him. Many of you opposed that, yet had Smith and Gee not taken that step the NCAA would have imposed more harsh sanctions after laying most of the blame at Tressel's feet.
The wild card was Mark Emmert who is fairly new in the role of NCAA president. Prior to Emmert, the NCAA usually looked to precedent when meting out penalties. Emmert has been inconsistent and hard to read based on the disparate treatment for violations received by tOSU, Tennessee, Miami (FL), North Carolina, Penn State, Auburn, and others thus far. Further, Gene Smith was likely no higher than the 6th most powerful person at tOSU at the time after Les Wexner, Robert Schottenstein, Alex Shumate, Gee, and other unbeknownst power brokers; therefore, it probably was not Smith's decision alone.
Bottom-line, it's easy to speculate and play 'what-if' when we were and are privy to only a fraction of the information available to Smith & Co. when they decided against self-imposing a bowl ban. So let's just enjoy THIS season for what it is and gear up for 2013.
I can't understand how guys just act like they know for a fact that self imposing a ban last season would have stopped us from getting a bowl ban this season! Simply put there was no way to know! Now say Gene would have went ahead and self imposed the ban last season, and the NCAA comes through and imposes one for this season on top of it? Then what would you be saying!? huh? Ya, that's the point, you don't know what the NCAA would have done. I personally feel that the NCAA was gonna make it's authority felt regardless and would have banned us this season anyway, so its a non issue to me!
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I seriously wonder if some posters scrutinize their own syllables and actions as quickly and closely as they do those of ol' Geno and Gee.
I find it too funny that many posters opposed Tressel's dismissal even after it was revealed that he publicly lied to the NCAA and to his superiors at tOSU about his knowledge of Tattoo-gate. Still they want Smith fired for making a few stupid statements and for misreading the tea leaves.

Do you know for a fact that a bowl ban last year would not of meant no bowl ban this year?
Again, what was the p[oint of going to the bowl last year?
Would it not of been prudent to offer it up last year? What would it of hurt.
There is a bunch of CYA going on in the Administration right now.
Hoping that the sheep by the smelly, oily lawn suasage they are putting out there.
It is working on most of you.
No I don't know and that is the point, no one did. And the point of going to a bowl game last year was to at least honor the seniors who deserved a chance to play in a bowl game. You guys like to act like you know what the NCAA was going to do, and that is what perplexes me, the fact is know one knew, but I would have bet that had we self imposed a ban, we'd be looking at a two year bowl ban and guys like you would still be blaming Gene Smith!
I, for one, don't really care whether or not we would've gotten a bowl ban this year. At least we would have given the NCAA a chance to consider the punishment at that. But no. Geno followed the money and extended a miserable season on a whim and a gamble. He didn't know squat and fleeced everyone into thinking that he did coming from his "close pals" in the NCAA. They probably knew him to be a foolish, arrogant oaf. He fumbled every press conference by looking lost and unprepared. The Meyer hire? I'm simply amazed that he didn't botch it. Urban wanted to be here, period.
Life must be really great for the 20/20ers. Why worry about mistakes when you can simply go back and change things after magically seeing how they turn out? Even more, 20/20ers decisions apparently do not affect anyone or anything else, so no need troubling oneself with little details like budgeting for a $100 million program or considering the well-being of over 300 other individuals.
Life is so much simpler in the land of 20/20.
