Dick was a great guy and loyal supporter of OSU athletics, sad to hear of his passing, from OSU:
COLUMBUS, Ohio—Richard L. “Dick” Smith, the long-time president of the Ohio State Buckeye Booster Club, died Monday after a long illness.
Gene Smith, Ohio State associate vice president and director of athletics, said Dick Smith will not be forgotten for his service to the university and the department of athletics.
“The Ohio State University lost a great friend with the passing of Dick Smith, a member of the Buckeye Booster Club since its inception in 1960,” Gene Smith said. “Dick served faithfully as the organization’s president for 35 years during which time countless student-athletes benefited from his dedication to the Ohio State Department of Athletics. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family.”
Urban Meyer, head coach of the Ohio State football team, said Dick Smith will be remembered for his love of the university.
“It is with great sadness to learn of the passing today of Mr. Dick Smith. He was a true Buckeye and one who supported the football program and the Department of Athletics very generously over the last 50 years. He had a sincere passion for The Ohio State University and the Buckeyes, and he gave us 35 years as President of the Buckeye Booster Club. We lost a terrific person and a wonderful supporter today.”
Dick Smith, a native of Baltimore, Md., served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before settling in Columbus as an automotive industry executive.
In addition to his support of Ohio State Athletics, Dick Smith served a stint as the president of the Columbus Clippers and as a vice president with the New York Yankees.
The Buckeye Booster Club has raised in excess of $4 million in support of Ohio State Athletics.
Arrangements are pending.
