Keeping the bad press away from PSU keeps selling students, recruits, parents and the media that the program is a great, upstanding program. Keeping this negative connotation away from PSU keeps them in positive light, keeping recruits from eliminating them from contention for their services.
This part might be a stretch:
Joe Pa and Sandusky keeping this a secret ensures Sandusky doesn't leave the program - keeping a proven defensive coach..do you think that's a competitive advantage (having a well known and proven coach)? After the higher ups were informed, they also hid the truth. To me, this implies they thought Sandusky to be a valuable asset to the football program. Keeping Sandusky around illegally provided them extra renown hands to assist the program with coaching, recruiting or anything else they needed.
Sandusky is the one with others created so-called LINEBACKER U.
How would the public and recruits feel about LB U being created by a sick monster?
PSU sure don't want that connection!
